3.02 PSX Emulator on 3.03 OE

greg | January 13, 2007

I personally have yet to experience any problems with 3.03 OE POPS (PSX emulation) but if you are, or have, this may be the solution for you. Dark_AleX has shared his method for using the 3.02 PSX emulator on 3.03 OE.

Instructions:

  • Copy seplugins to the root of your memory stick.
  • Using some of the latest psardumpers, extract the 3.02 firmware with the option of the button X.
  • Once done, copy the following files from /F0/kd to /seplugins/pops302: meaudio.prx, mesg_led.prx, pops.prx and popsman.prx.
  • Enter in recovery menu, and enable pops302ld.prx plugin if you want to load 3.02 emulator.
  • Run the game. It will run with 3.02 psx emulator.
  • Whenever you want to use again the 3.03 emulator, just disable the plugin from recovery menu.

Straight forward? Good.

Known problems (quoted from the readme):

During tests i tried castlevania sotn compressed. During the game i noticed anormal high activity
in the memory stick (note: the fact that the prx’s are in memory stick is not related to this issue, since they are quickly loaded to ram). It didn’t happen with the game not compressed (and it doesn’t happen in 3.03 compressed). I don’t know if this issue affects other games. In such a case, it may be a problem of the mixing of modules, or maybe just a 3.02 problem. If you experience that problem, you may want to use uncompressed games if it slowdowns the game.

He is fixing problems before we find them, I am waiting for the day he releases a custom firmware before sony does. I think it will take an act of congress to stop Dark Alex -even then my money is on DA

The one reason I know you would want to use the earlier version PSX emu is because FF7 battle swirls are messed up in the 3.03 version

I have yet to run into issues however, this is still great to know about bugs within the system. I’m playing Castlevania SOTN on 3.03 and have yet to run into problems (uncompressed) but still…good to know what can happen.

simple answer: NO, check back after spring break for a downgrader, or go to the forums for the most complete answer in the world for your official 3.02.

He said emulating. What’s your real firmware version? 2.8 below and you’re good. Downgrade then upgrade to 3.03 OE.

Also, is it possible to use a tool such as PSX2PSP to convert PSX ISOs so that they can be read with the 3.03 emulator, or do these only work with Custom Firmware versions.
Please help!

I compressed my copy of Castlevania: SOTN, and it shrunk it down to 400mb (level 9 compression). I thought, sweet. I didn’t notice any slowdown except in the load halls.

Then it locked up on me. I couldn’t use the home menu, i had to fully power down my psp. I reloaded, tried again, after it did it a couple more times I gave up on using the compression. I don’t see any reason to switch back to the old emu, just don’t use the compression. It doesn’t work right.

to shin-kazuyamon:
don’t use compression, and don’t use pal iso’s, and it shouldn’t lock up. Mine never does unless I use a compressed iso.

to Riad:
If you don’t understand how to use psardumper, how did you upgrade to dark alex’s custom firmware in the 1st place?

to lightcloud007:
Sony made the psx emulator. Apparently they understand the software and hardware of the psx pretty well, because they invented it. Maybe we’d get an n64 emu of that quality that fast if nintendo made one for us?
