PSP Firmware 3.03 Is Out

greg | December 20, 2006

Sony keeping busy with their regular firmware update routine… 3.03 just hit “Network Update” — fetch it that way or via PSP Hacks (below).

Not much is new with 3.03 — nothing too get excited about anyway…

  • Revisions to strengthen security have been added.
  • The number of PLAYSTATION®Network titles that can be played under [Game] has increased.

Furthermore, the most recent modified PSAR Dumper cannot decrypt 2 particular PRX modules; they are:

  • loadexec.prx
  • sysmem.prx

…and “reboot.bin” too.

DO NOT upgrade if you wish to continue using homebrew.

Sony just needs to make the umd’s check the actualy file that is in flash and compare it with the firmware the game thinks it is running and if it is different autobrick the psp and put a file in flash letting them know it was bricked for piracy

Actually, newb. The whole point of Devhook is to fool the PSP into thinking the memory stick IS Flash. Hence why everything is booted from and written to the MS, the PSP thinks it IS the flash, AFAIK, there would be no way for sony to tell the difference.

dont totally rule out what these assholes are capable of. this is a new concept to be wary of. an idea like this is like alchemy to some people, so if there is any possible way for them to do this to people they may eventually find a way. there’s also a good chance that they won’t, but don’t bet on that.

I am pretty sure Sony is checking out these hacking sites also. It like kidna obvious with the Address. But i think its the hardware limitation that prevetns them from Making homebrew impossible. B/C they always need points to access the PSP data for refurbished or ones that actually got taken for Warranty. As Build up they have to have Input point for the data. the chips dont comepreflashed. So yeah… Its like impossible for them to make it hackproof without Bottlenecking their own system. But they love to make our lifes harder hahaha

theres a problem with that auto-bricking

nothing i have done has been piracy, i run firmware 1.5 (it was bought at 1.5) and use devhook currently for 3.02
the 3.02 update was not pirated, i used the programs to take info from it for my own use, it was not distributed to others, nor was any money to sony lost because of it- i will still buy my games as UMDs

that would be an extreme solution to prevent homebrew that would more than likely cause a lawsuit AGAINST sony

strategically speaking, this is a sneaky way for Sony to obtain the IP addresses for some of the web traffic here. All they would need to do is have it configured to log cookies and/or IP’s of all visitors, along with a set of referring urls, and then just narrow the results to all visitors coming from psp-hacks.com

easy, and most likely very bad for all of you in the long run

Comment by Whatever
2006-12-20 09:21:46

I meant, logging as in…all the traffic Sony would get from people clicking on the ad. though I wonder if a code could be written to relay that information to them anyway…just for all the visitors here. I hope Greg will be looking out for that sort of thing.

its possible for someone ELSE to crack it, and send Booster the encryption info
from there its usually not difficult to create a devhook update that adds a firmware version to the list
the decryption is the longest part now that there is alot of experiance in creating the devhook applications

…This update is obviously pathetic. Sony still doesn’t want to admit loss to our homebrew society? Sony, I really want you to listen to this. Stop your updating. Just give the final one which is for forever, that all PS games will be able to be played (Don’t worry, guys, we will soon decrypt it). And that, for the PS games, just give them free downloads without via-ing PSX, because PS old school games just aren’t worth the price at all, not even for a dollar, and I wouldn’t expect you would even take A DOLLAR – being so cheap. So, just give free downloads of PS games. And last of all, Sony, you should start focusing on the Memory Stick industry, rather than countering us by sticking your nose in our business. Just that, you stop doing these stupid updates, we will prevent people downloading/uploading/playing privated games in any form, which would be our trade. For what I meant by focusing on the MS industry, is to research on better materials to link things up faster, that means transfering. You could try cheaper materials which is also more conductive than other ones. As we all know, people are all trying to use optical fiber to replace copper wires for conducting electricity, and it worked! You might as well make a optical fiber ‘flat plate’ to have better conduction with each media appliances. Try focusing on MS size too. If you can’t handle all these, give these plans to Sandisk, and let them have my plans. I gave my comments, and it is your choice to accept it or not. If you do, good, take my advice. If not, do it your own way, and you would regret the way I think technology works. I believe replacing materials is good. Using too much copper, in 10 years, it would be gone from Earth, unless by sythetic production, which costs millions for such small pieces. You are doing a favor for both you would have more attractive products and saving the environment. Thank you.

2006-12-20 08:09:39

Yep, but the thing is, how do you actually play the game without L2 and R2? Sorry, I never tried them before…

Comment by Shaddowknight
2006-12-20 08:20:42

they use the analog stick to emulate L2/R2 (since PS1 games do NOT require analog sticks to function- first generation PS1 controllers didnt have them at all and can be used to play any PS1 game)
i think they also had some alternative configuration to have L2/R2

Comment by Shaddowknight
2006-12-20 08:18:07

you fail to realize better conducting materials COST more- Silver is MUCH better at conducting than copper is, but it is also MUCH more expensive

copper will not be gone in 10 years, we have used up maybe 10% of the natural supply after several THOUSAND years of using it, often WITHOUT recycling it

get a clue before downing what sony is doing/has done
they are constantly working on making them better/faster/cheaper/more reliable/smaller
copper isnt a problem, plastics are getting better, fiberoptics has it’s use in some devices- but it may not be best in all things

Comment by Fiery
2006-12-20 08:48:24

Or should I clearly explain, the ores that contain copper. They WILL be gone after 10-15 years if we continue using it like now, they will all be extracted, and by then, we have to research on other ores that contain copper. Then, it would pollute the world for quite a portion for opening a vast mining land on that new ore. Well for now, I believe those ores are in Russia, because most unusual phenomenon happens there, and several Unun series elements are found there.

Optical fiber is really easy to make, and cheap too, and it also provides slightly better conduction than copper. That is what I suggested.

Comment by Shaddowknight
2006-12-20 10:56:59

that makes more sense
optical fiber is easier and cheaper to make, but it doesnt have conductivity like metals do, it uses light, those cables are also not the most durable of options

fiberoptic cables are a good option, but im not sure that at the current point in development that they are the best option- once more work is done with them in other areas and further improvements in reliablity and durability, then it would be much more useful in home electronics

Comment by Fiery
2006-12-20 22:16:03

Yea, but I hope this research on using optical fiber/fiberoptic, but anyway, I hope Sony would get involve in doing this new thing. Really, I think it existed and worked already, but…?

what you people fail to realize is the increased security probably does not lie withing the PSP’s function alone, but it is likely to do with the commnection of the PSP unit to a PS3 unit, and the transferring of bought PS1 games from the PS3 online store

theres no real reason to upgrade (unless you want to increase the limit to the games you can download from the store [it was previously limited to 5 per PSP MAC address])
there’s no real reason to rush this into Devhook just yet- have patience, the only reason you would want this into Devhook is for the reason above or to boast about having the latest firmware version emulated in devhook

the only PSX game really WORTH buying anyway is Final Fantasy VII

Okay, I’m going out on a limb here by saying that we should not complain that sony is making security updates.

[For the Record, I use homebrew, devhook and everything else we all here enjoy. Do I buy umds? Yes, but only for games which I truly like. everything else is on ISO.]

My point would be that saying Sony has a right, nay, a professional and legal obligation -both as a hardware/software developer, and to the third party developers creating software for sony products. This obligation also means trying to find new ways to have proper sales and the enforcement of upholding copyright laws.

So yes, we should expect that Sony will keep making new updates. And yes, we should expect the bulk of the x.01’s, x.02’s, x.03’s and so forth to be mainly security updates than additional features. We should expect and also respect that. please don’t bash Sony for trying to do what it should be doing as a money-making company.. no matter how ‘pathetic’ or ‘futile’ thier efforts may be.

With that said, let us instead focus on thanking Booster, and all the other coders, testers and many many nameless people who do thier best to give us workarounds to each security update that comes around. Let us thank all those brave people who willingly went and tried new programs at the expense of thier units (may all thier bricks be in a happier place) so that we may know which are good and which are hoaxes.

People, let us all learn to accept that we are not in the right here… NOR are we in the wrong. We are simply people who CAN. CAN- to the degree that we have at our fingertips the resources to gain for free what would otherwise cost other people money. Though we are nary a dent in the financial sales listings, let us remember that if no one bought UMDs this market for the psp will certainly close. What we do, we do because we can. What sony does, it does becuase it should.

I hereby close my little opinion with this:

Nice try Sony, a jolly good try. Booster will probably pwn this update in a few days. You two keep up the fight.

Damn yo, you brought a tear to my eye, most intelligent post here, PERIOD. Sony will continue to make updates. Hackers will continue to crack them, that’s just the way it will be forever. Sony has to keep it legal, doesn’t mean everyone else does too. If you really LIKE a game and you can afford it, do the industry a favor and BUY THE GAME. I don’t really use ISO’s because I mainly do old school retro on my PSP, and anything I like that’s new I go out and BUY. However, I can see using ISO’s for sub standard games you just want to play around with, but it should be a lesson to the legit developers as well, make a crappy product, and we shall ISO it. Make something GOOD of FF7 or GTA calibur, and we shall BUY it. I’ll bet a decent game like GTA: LCS has at least 90%+ of it’s owners owning it in UMD format. In contrast, games that are not so good will probably see more life in a bargain bin or as an ISO. Just my 2 gil on the subject…

im all for ISO playing as long as you own the game and made the backup yourself

this may be a little dent in their profits….
but then you factor in PS2 pirated games.. PS3 pirated games, pirated movies, and everythign else people do to screw companies out of money

many little “nothings” all eventually add to to a lot
old console games which are no longer avaiable (as in pre-PS1/GC) i feel are fine to download backup copies of- since you really cant buy them anymore (although now with the Wii, you can get old Nintendo company games, but even then those wont cause any dents in profit)

i think they’re just focusing on ways to keep people locked out of the Sony store. At least in terms of the downloads, mainly the PS1 games, but also whatever future ‘homebrew’ Sony comes up with. I think what they find most attractive about this, by comparison to UMD media as their delivery system for intellectual property/code, is that they can always upgrade the security requirements on all outgoing products to match that of the highest firmware they are telling people to run, as opposed to the UMD scenario where recalling everything and remanufacturing it would be a pointless waste of money. So the next time the playing field is levelled out for a few days and everyone is emulating the latest firmware, I say go grab whatever it is you are hoping to get from that store before they lock everyone out again with another security update. One thing to be concerned with though, is that they have been configuring their site to know the difference between firmwares being run off memory cards and those legitimately installed. In order to get the PS1 games you need to pay with a credit card. Thus, you are taking a chance because you are essentially going to Sony and saying “hi, I use a hacked psp, here’s my name and address”. A lot of people don’t care about that of course…*shrugs* I have two psp’s, so I’m thinking about just upgrading one. It started out as a Euro firmware anyway, so the button mapping gets issues in 1.0 and 1.5. and also, Booster if you come up with a devhook for this please wait until they release Resident Evil before you tell anyone about it. They are testing the waters right now with these crappy games. They know Res Evil and Final Fantasy are the ones people are waiting for, and they want to explore all their security options and finish patching up version 3 firmware so it’s solid as a rock before they release those. Let them go on thinking that for a while, and then hit them hard with a Devhook.

that’s true, but that’s not going to stop Sony from profiling ALL homebrew users as potential pirates. People like you really piss me off because all you see is your own acts and since you have “nothing to hide” you feel that nobody else should either, and the ones that do…you couldn’t care less about protecting them. It’s people like you who have made this country a fucking hell by encouraging the kind of politicians and unconstitutional practices we all have to put up with these days. Stop thinking of yourself and think of the homebrew community as a whole. If we lose a ton of homebrew fans and developers to this kind of thing, it’s obviously going to be bad for everyone. I follow the rules, right up to the limit of what I know is legally ok to do. Not because I think it’s wrong to do otherwise perse. In fact I think it’s great that this archaic business model of mass media used for enslaving creativity and inhibiting cultural development is finally collapsing everywhere. Fuck corporations and their greed.

Comment by Shaddowknight
2006-12-20 10:45:56

oh, i know others have problems with that, but if they ARE doing something illegal, Sony has all the right to look for it

the homebrew community as a whole is not based on piracy- get your head out of your ass
homebrew user= potential pirate right?
whats that mean? nothing really- they THINK you MIGHT be doing something illegal, but theres almost nothing they can do about that

if you download illegal materials, then fine, you know the risks and penalties, and if you get caught, its your own damn fault

Sony wont spend $10,000 to monitor or pursue legal actions on one person who downloads a single ISO off the internet from an illegal source
they will ask/tell you to delete the file and take legal action on the source of the files
i dont encourage unconstitutional practices, in fact i hate them, and greedy politicians need to die

you get your own head out of your ass kid, and stop being so damn preachy. i know what I’m talking about. And it doesn’t cost “$10,000″ either, moron. In addition to that, it is technically a violation to “decompile, disassemble, or reverse engineer” any Sony product including the psp. It’s all in the user agreement.

Basically, unless you own a PS3 and have a large memory stick and have broadband internet, this will not do ya any good…but to have all that, you have got to have a good bit of money….therefore, buy another PSP and keep it at the newest firmware and keep another one with 1.5 with DevHook….Sony isn’t gonna quit with these bullshit updates…and pretty soon, i’m sure they are gonna have an update that just says “PSP Firmware x.xx update released just because Sony can!”

Ive been reading the comments about how stupid sony are and that they never learn but if there was no sony then thier would be no psp and if there was no psp their would be no homebrew, so i think that enstead of flaming sony you should just acknowledge the software release and get on with life i mean most of you have already got 1.5 psp so this wont even make a difference to you, but i also think sony should stop trying and save some money, i just dont like it when people flame sony because without them i wouldnt hav my precious PSP oh en if sony do update thier umd fw to 3.03 then just use devhook to emulate it and stop complaining bout sony, I AINT STICKING UP FOR SONY all im saying is get on with life

OMFG sony give up man damned i mean come on man this is bs. the security updateas and stopping homebrew are loosing you money. if they made like a 4.0 firmware letting ALL homebrew be played off of the psp except for iso’s, then we would all update to that, the ta-082 dilema would stop, your sales would DRASTICALLY boost. the games for psp arent that bad considering its a portable console but ur shooting urself in da foot with updates GIVE UP

Comment by nedthehead
2006-12-20 16:08:06

All Homebrew but ISO’s? Uh, that means no Devhook, and thats what a lot of people buy PSP’s for: Hacking it to get ISO’s.

A better idea is to just Leave firmware 3.03 as their final release, and then have all newer games made have the ability to play on any firmware. For example: MGS Ops on a 1.5 with no Devhook.

The problem with Sony isn’t Sony. The hardware groups do some amazing things like the Walkman, MiniDisc and PSP. The problem with Sony is the software and media groups. Those are the guys who insist on every form of DRM possible. Those are the guys who fail to realize that their desire to lock everything down makes consumers not want the hardware guys’ nifty products.

Unfortunately for us, as long as the media guys have control of the content, the hardware guys will continue to push out firmware updates to accomodate them.

Comment by Shaddowknight

not everything is playable on 1.50
reasons for saome of the updates were files that allowed for better or certain graphical capabilities- video codecs and such

that’s an interesting point. most software developers are usually greedy nerds that never got laid in high school, and spent half their lives locked away learning programming, so that one say they could be ‘big shots’ like John Carmack and drive Ferraris and live in Silicon Valley. These people aren’t starving or needy. They just want to get the rock star lives they camped out for all these years.

sony will continue with new updates for as long as psp’s are a hot item on the market because they are trying to improve everything that the psp was originally meant for and not basterdize it by using it for other things that takes the glory away from the original product and it really eats sony up :-\

yeah u no tht is true and i do agree. but if u think about it, hacking ur psp a lot gives u the chance of bricking ur psp which ruins it. if and when this happens, you would then go out and buy another psp. then, sony would be making more money. idk why they never thought about tht. they would be making more money if they allowed the psp to be hacked at a firmware of 2.xx or higher.

Comment by Stuart
2006-12-20 17:55:57

PSP’s don’t magically brick because you have put a lot of homebrew/hacks on it. It gets bricked when a homebrew/hack sends info it can’t handle or process or something like that.

I really dont see a problem with the aut0-bricking if they wanted to sony could just make it against the rules to use dumped and decrypted FW and they can put a little prx into a fw so if its being dumped and decrypted it would brick your psp saying “your psp has been yoused to dump and decrypt FW and to have it fixed yoiu must pay this ammount of money and send it to us and we will change mother board and upgrade” and so peple dont discover what prx does that they could rename it each time or do somthing else if you dont like what i got to say email me at

easy…. use devhook to emulate fw 1.50 and then when you try things, it will “brick” the flash files, and do no harm- i beleive many developers do this to keep from bricking their PSPs
if they find an auto-brick program in a prx this would allow them to attempt to find it and find a way to fix it

it’d be abit of work for it, but it would probably be do-able

I enjoy my PSP but I mainly enjoy it for homebrew. I have only played one or two UMD games on it. Just like the playstation the official releases are mostly lazy cash-in crap games.

But – what would you have Sony do?? They need to try to protect themselves they are a business after all and it is their job to make money.

I think Sony should concentrate on putting out games that people want to play rather than trying to limit the useability of their machine.

I don’t want the PSP to go the way of the dreamcast, which was killed once the GD-ROM format was cracked and there was mass piracy. None of the software developers could make money so they just stopped.

Merry Christmas everyone!
