2.71 Special Edition (Revision A) Released

greg | October 8, 2006

This is going to blow your mind… Dark_AleX has released what he calls FW 2.71 Special Edition (SE). What is it and what’s so special about it? 2.71 SE Revision A is a custom firmware that enables the best of both worlds; combining both the functionality of FW 1.50 and 2.71 into a single flash.

Homebrew can be run on both kernels, the 1.50 one and the 2.71 one, letting almost all current homebrew to work on the 1.50 kernel, and 2.71 homebrew compatible with HEN C in the 2.71 kernel.

Note: the installer writes to FLASH0. I’m not responsible of any damage of what happens, since this software is provided free and without warranty. TA-082 users cannot use this because a 1.50 bootstrap is needed to boot the system patched.

The setup procedure may seem a little overwhelming at first — ensure you read it carefully and thoroughly. It wouldn’t surprise me if a 3rd party releases a package containing the required necessities, until then…

Creating the DXAR file

  • Inside MS_ROOT/PSP/GAME you will see 4 folders. Copy seupdmaker and seupdmaker% to /PSP/GAME/
  • Get the 1.50 and 2.71 sony updaters in the seupdmaker folder with the names “150.PBP” and “271.PBP”.
  • Run the program. This program won’t write to the flash, it will just create a file called DATA.DXAR in the same directory (seupdmaker).
  • Once that you have done this, you can save the DATA.DXAR file to skip this step in the future.

Flashing 2.71 SE

  • Copy the files MS_ROOT/PSP/GAME/271seflasher and 271seflasher% to /PSP/GAME.
  • Copy the generated DATA.DXAR file at 271seflasher directory. This file, at release SE-A, should have ALWAYS the MD5 8E59FAAA97F526F8EC723D1B77700C2B and SHA-1 15151DA906DAE508AABC668CA2FC65D
    9B541F02B
  • Run the flasher. If your battery is less than 75%, the program will show the error saying that and will return to the XMB.
  • If you have enough battery, the program will continue and will show an agreement. Press X to accept it and flash the custom firm, or R to cancel and exit to the XMB.
  • If you accept, the program will flash the custom firmware. DONT shutdown the psp and DON’T quit the memory stick.
  • After finished, you psp will be rebooted to XMB… of 2.71

Using SE

  • SE runs all homebrew from the /PSP/GAME folder using the 2.71 kernel. The compatibility of applications using the 2.71 kernel is the same as HEN-C since they both use the same core. Homebrew here have to be NOT kxploited.
  • To run applications with the 1.50 kernel, and have about 99% compatibility with current homebrew, put those applications in the /PSP/GAME150 folder. Homebrew here can be either kxploited or not.

Now stop drooling, close your mouth, and if you’re a non-TA-082 user — give it a try! More details are of course included in “Readme.txt.”

Had POC firmware with TONS of XFLASH mods and it still went thru and updated to this new firmware with ZERO problems, love not having ot go back to 1.50 just to use my emus, this rocks

just a reminder

2.71 homebrew go in the “MS ROOT/PSP/GAME” folder
1.50 homebrew go in the “MS ROOT/PSP/GAME150″ folder

if you want clarification in the readme it says “At the moment, there is only installer for 1.50, although it could be easily ported to whatever
firmware with kernel access such as 2.60 and 2.71, but at the moment i prefer not to doing it to avoid
TA-082 using it and bricking their psp’s.”

Just a quick update, everything seems to work fine if anything everything seems a bit quicker than on 1.5. Have got corrupted icons though even though I disabled them through the recovery menu, Very pleased so far, and all legit iso’s work great. conclusion every 1.5 user should try it, if you dont like it you can always downgrade again

It doesn’t matter if you have an ISO, just emulate 2.81 (when it is released)
It’s bad if you buy the game though….

@36:
Just get the 2.71 update and rename it 271.pbp
Then. get the 1.50 update and rename it 150.pbp

@40

Well, for me at least, the best thing is not having ot go back and forth between 1.50 for homebrew and emulators and 2.71(dh emulated) for my devhook run isos and new games, this does it all in one firmware enviroment, without the need to reboot or escape 2.71, just put the psp to sleep and you can keep the DH setting indefinitely

For those who are waiting for noob-friendly installs.. I’ll do this in a day or two. I’m currently making the file directory and writing the readme while troubleshooting stuff on it. I’ll make sure I make a detailed readme and noob-friendly instructions. Just give me a few more days and I won’t disappoint you guys. As for those who are wondering how this is useful and what does it work on, let me tell you: this works on 1.5 only because D_A didn’t want to have ta-082 users bricking their PSPs, so he made the install only for 1.50 users, so all those existing non-ta082 users who have 2.71, downgrade to 1.50 and wait for my package to come, or do it yourself if you can’t wait. And this is useful because it combines 2.71 into 1.50, making this custom firmware a 2.71 w/ 1.50 features and patched kernel. It can do much more than a 1.50, but still, you need a 1.50 to use this custom firmware. People who are saying: 2.71 rawkz 1.50 sux.. you’re wrong.. without 1.50 in the first place, you can’t flash and use this custom firmware to your PSP, therefore, 1.50 is still the pwnage. ^_^

Yes, I saw that, but it’s not detailed enough. I’m making a complete package included with many stuff for newbs and a perfectly detailed readme, so if people who know what they’re doing, just get that pack or dump the thing yourself, for people who don’t, keep waiting, I’m already halfway done, just need to do some testing and write a detailed readme, should be released within 12-24 hours. ^_^ but now i have to go to school for a paper, so yeah.. will be back in 4 hours time to continue constructing the pack. =D

i wonder if thats possible

2006-10-08 19:29:24

I put RECOVERY in the root of the memory stick and the other 2 in the psp/game directory and ran the program within the psp. It was pretty simple and well worth it. Only mistake i made was thinking you rename your GAME folder to GAME150. My psp didnt reconize it until i made another folder named GAME and changed my original game to GAME150 since it was full of my 1.5 crap anyway.

Comment by Zephyrus
2006-10-08 22:22:25

@Justin: no, he can’t create a update, because he would have to include many sony copyrighted stuff that may get him into trouble. this custom firmware only flashes certain files over to make it work, not the whole thing that makes the PSP run. That’s why. Anyway, you just upgrade to 2.71, and use the updateflasher to downgrade it to make sure you get a clean firmware. Then, wait for my noob-friendly pack which should be released within the next 24hr. ^_^

@kurotenshi: it will be uploaded here at PSP-Hacks by greg when I’m done with it. don’t worry about it, i just got home from school and i’m about to continue with it.

@gir: if you wana get back to 1.5, you should place the recovery in PSP/GAME/RECOVERY and place a 1.5 eboot there and rename it to UPDATE.PBP. Then press R while turning on your PSP to get into recovery mode, then you can choose to revert back there. ^_^

No thats cool, thanks anyways though..

Also, one other question, does it matter what version of 1.50 you have (I originally got my 1.5 firmware from the Devhook 0.46 Easy Installer), ie. does this flash the entire flash or use the current 1.50 files in your flash and just add more data?

Comment by Mr.Eror

It reflashes every thing so …. If your scared u can downgrade to 1.00 then upgrade to 1.50/…..

Ok excellent, thanks for the info, i gotta say, Dark Alex has outdone himself this time, and did you notice that he is planning on adding built-in ISO support to custom firmware at a later date… imagine that, we will be able to have 2.71 and not even need to load devhook to play ISOs… amazing!!

Comment by Zephyrus

@A Murg: it replaces many data and can be considered as “reflashes every thing” like Mr.Eror said. You don’t have to downgrade to 1.00.. lol, just run it and you’re all good, man. Anyway, I’m still making my pack, and I’ve heard Chaos also did one which should be posted up before mine since I’m still in the process of troubleshooting it.

Oh yeah, if anyone is looking for a little freeware utility to check MD5 and SHA-1 Checksums, this little program is great, it adds a tab to your File Properties in Windows which shows you the MD5 and SHA-1 Checksums, which will allow you to check your DATA.DXAR file to make sure it is right…

Actually, I use HashCalc (http://www.slavasoft.com/hashcalc/index.htm) personally. ^^ And, L337P1R0, it’s probably best that you install it with a clean firmware, try to uninstall your custom firmware, upgrade to 2.71, use the updateflasher by dax to downgrade back to 1.5, and since it does a clean format of the flash0 like sce updaters do, you’ll get a “clean” firmware.

@Mr.Eror: using the 2.71 generic downgrader by dax aka update flasher is way better than downgrading to 1.00 because not all 1.50 can downgrade to 1.00.. and some people might just end up bricking by using ur method just because they are “scared”.

@125: HEMPY: Most emulators save the last folder you used for the ROMs, this would be PSP/GAME/{emulatorname}, however, since you have probably renamed your GAME folder to GAME150 and created a new GAME folder, the saved location of your ROMs for the emulators which save paths are now wrong, try changing paths using the interface on the emulator, if this fails check the config file for the emulator you may need to edit this and change the path manually…

Just a couple of things to note with the SE firmware, some of them you may already know:

!!! IMPORTANT !!!
DO NOT USE the merge devhook to firmware settings in devhook, it will probably brick your PSP

1) Korean and Chinese languages in the system setup are disabled because they are not compatible with the 1.5 Bootstrap

2) You cannot use Sony Official updaters to update your firmware, to use them you must downgrade to 1.5 first

3) Hold R for the recovery menu

4) 1.0 AND 1.5 homebrew MUST be put into the GAME150 folder not the GAME folder (you can rename it, but see point 5)

5) You MUST create a GAME folder if you are to use the homebrew which you put in the GAME150 folder, if you dont create a GAME folder no items will appear in your XMB (this has caught many people out)

5) 1.0 and 1.5 homebrew will NOT WORK with WPA encryption because the 1.5 kernel is used to load these, therefore you still cant use WPA with 1.0 or 1.5 homebrew, but 2.71 compatible homebrew (under the GAME folder) will be able to use WPA encryption for the WLAN

6) Straight from the readme file “Using the restore default parameters is not recommended. It won’t brick your psp since it can be recovered with recovery mode, but still, not recommended”

7) If you use the disable Sony logo on startup option in the recovery mode it will also disable the Auto UMD load when you start your PSP (unfortunately it seems to also disable it when emulating ISOs under devhook when using the SE firmware, which is weird)

8) The hide corrupted icons may not work for ALL kxploited homebrew.

Most of this stuff is taken from the Readme.txt file but some of it isnt in there…

Re: 5)
Whats the point upgrading a 1.5 to 2.71 SE??

Those other homebrews such as; eReader, DAX, UMD Emulator, PMP Mod, dictionary… etc. are brilliant to use, would be a pity if we have to stop using those.

4 everybody:
No it wont work on a ta-082
yes you can downgrade back safely to 1.50
All homebrew except for ir-shell)which is now patched will work
Yes it will do isos.
yes devhook does work
Yes you have a (small) chance of bricking
yes recovery mode
all homebrew
easy install

if not, what else works for UMD emulation?

Getting same problems described above (#127) with DAXiso also – try loading the ISO, screen goes black, nothing happens, have to restart PSP. Tried various configurations in DAXiso also (Direct Load, System Menu, Direct LoadExec) and all produce same result. The UMD Emulator option loads up UMDEMULATOR 0.8c as expected, but trying to start ISOs just causes it to freeze up…! A couple of ISOs do work with DAXiso though, but mostly just get the black screen and nothing (I assume the PSP is freezing up when trying to load the ISO)

[FW 1.5 with Devhook 0.46 versus FW 1.5 flashed to 2.71 SE-A]

Besides the fact that you don’t have to boot in 1.5 or 2.71 modes to run homebrews, emulators, and isos, what advantage(s), if any, does this 2.71 SE-A has?

I had FW 2.6, I downgraded to 1.5, installed Devhook 0.46 and everything is just perfect. I run homebrews and emulators directly in 1.5 mode, and use the 2.71 emulator that Devhook includes to run all isos. So far I haven’t had a single problem.

So pretty much my question is, are you willing to risk bricking your PSP and performing a rather obscure flash of it, when you can just install Devhook and not risk anything, just so you don’t have to boot in 2 different FW modes? Or is it that 2.71 SE-A offers any advantage, like it is faster or something?

I’m just taking a stab… lol I’m still trying to figure out if this 2.71SE-A will work on a version 2.6 PSP as a direct flash or if I had to downgrade to 1.5 first…

I use devhook to try to load it using 2.71 firmware, it did not worked.., I have solved this problem by installing a 2.50 firmware in my devhook, using devhook firmware installer and my umd svr2006, so when i want to play my svr2006 i just need to set the firmware of devhook to 2.50! weird huh? is der others games that 2.71 cant play? g

Comment by Noone9

@#168: Indeed, so far it seems that the only advantage 2.71 SE-A offers over Devhook 0.46 is that you don’t need to boot in 2 different modes to run things.

Obviously I appreciate the effort Dark_AleX put into this, and it is rather amazing. However for people who are just interested in running homebreweds and ISO’s in a safe manner (without flashing our PSP’s) and don’t mind rebooting (which only takes like ~5 seconds anyhow), then Devhook is our cup of tea.

Also in regards to newer games, when the emulator and the flash for 2.81 come up, it may be more feasible to run a 2.81 emulator on Devhook, rather than having to flash it into 2.81 which may be another cryptic lengthty and risky process.
