PeeJay? PSP Java!

Posted by Josh

From the creator of the infamous pimpware comes Pee Jay, or PSP Java. That’s right JAVA on our beloved PSP. If you didn’t know, JAVA is an Internet language allowing the running of services, games, e-mail and much much more! Read from the creator himself…

PeeJay? Yeah PeeJay..! Or call it Psp Java, PimpJava … Java for ur psp!

Yep, I made a small port of the j2me (K)VM, making my PSP capable of running JAVA programs.. It was a very easy port…. as the Sun KVM is easy to port. It was done in a jiffy… ;-) …

See my video of [it] running…

BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM! According to SUN, dickydick1969 is not allowed to release said emulator for some unexplainable reasons. This outrages me because it hinders the development of great homebrew capabilities! If you want to e-mail SUN about this situation: click here and express your views and ask to let pimpware release the port! Here’s the info from the man himself:

So why not sharing the stuff ?? (giving you a download link for example…)

It’s sad… :-( :-(

I asked SUN for permission for distributing my port and they said I could not (yet) distribute it for some (not to mention here) reasons. At least not now.. :-(

So perhaps some influent people can persuade SUN in someway.. mail them!.. ;-) or I have to port another VM..

Anyway porting the full MIDP dist will take some time.. So I could use dev help… Currently I’m in the process of building the graphical part (enabling MIDP2.0 compliant midlets on your PSP :-D ).. And ofcourse also with the latest version of PiMPStreamer

Man dickydick! you have time to makes stuff like this and raise kids! Great job on porting, hope SUN will give in. My thoughts on it, Sun thinks they’ll get in trouble with sony cause of priacy reason when there is no way to use java to create cracks or any form of hacking on the psp. You know what would be cool! I have a lot of webcams that I like to watch that are in java, could it be possible to use the wifi on the psp to view em. (I’d have a portal of the vegas lights on my psp before I go to sleep. sorry I’m addicted to vegas)

Ha, here’s another idea. Porting azures to psp! Be totaly useless, but some plus factors may come up. Say you are torrenting an iso “that I totaly legally own but don’t have the capabilities to back up”. Useing irshell you could extract the iso and play it useing devhook all without a pc givin that you can correctly download torrents with the psp web browser without it thinking it’s a rss feed.

Don’t forget that this is the Java 2 Micro Edition, not the full fledged Java 2 Standard or Enterprise Edition.
It’s capabilities will be limited although I’ve never gone over the J2ME libraries or APIs to tell you exactly HOW limited, it’s basically the JVM that runs on portable devices, so I’m thinking that a special version of a torrent client would have to be built from the ground up to run on this, but should be possible as it’s still full off all the network features.

I also think that he should have released first, and asked questions later. Of course SUN would say no.

oh.. this isn’t the full version. damn.. (maybe)
    but still, Java on PSP.

i wonder how this will be run. (devhook mod type thing or launcher..)

Wow, this would be great for the PSP…sooo much more capabilities…cant wait :D

#12, i agree with you totally…either way, copyright laws ARE going to be broken, so its like a continuous loop of copyright infingement…but when has anybody here ever worried about copyright infingement? ;) imo, it should be released ASAP!

It’s J2ME (micro edition), which is the JAVA environment used on most mobile phones … so when you run a JAVA game on your Nokia, that’s J2ME!

You can find more information here >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J2me

But anyways, this would be a great to the PSP Homebrew community… Great work dickydick1969

Runescape? Runescape? more bloody Runescape? … you guys are freaking obsessed!!!!

NO … based on the description above this will NOT run Runscape. Runescape requires a JAVA internet applet, this is the J2ME Runtime Environment … it will only run JAR executables writen for J2ME (Micro Edition), the most common of these will be found for Mobile Phones.

the way i see it is sony doesent want homebrew, but they still want the psp to be multymedia frendly, eventually they will add support for all these with newer firmwares, but if hackers can port one sooner i dont see the problem, since most homebrew is ilegal anyways.

This is a FRIGGIN COOL IDEA, i have programming with J2ME, made a few phone games up, Bejeweled, Columns, and Yahtzee (cant take all the credit for the last one), and its really easy simple to do, it would beat having to use command-line compilers and the like in C for the PSP…. come on dude, just release it as a torrent from an anonymous source, or email to someone who is willing to release, then you cant get into trouble…

Java is a object oriented software development language which is syntactically similar to C, its very easy to develop games and the like, and the J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) is the version of Java that is made for mobile devices like mobile phones and PDAs, i think it would be perfect for the PSP…

If you’re really worried about SUN doing something, I laugh at you. Why? They can’t charge you with any type of law enfringement due to the fact that they release the J2ME source for porting to various systems as a developer needs. By reading the EULA it may say that you can’t publish it without their approval or something, but the truth is, that’s not true at all because the company releases the source of it’s own free will. It’s the end-users choice what to do with their finished product whether it just be a port of the J2ME or a program with J2ME built into it. It doesn’t matter. They can say don’t release it, but they can not sue you or anything for it. It’s pretty dumb that you don’t release it. Being smart enough to be able to port it to the PSP but not able to know these few simple facts and laws. It’s a shame really…
