HEN Rev. B and DevHook Launcher for 2.71!

greg | September 24, 2006

Update: HEN Revision B is now supporting an alternative binary loader. If you’ve experienced problems with your PSP freezing or not writing the desired files to flash, try this one.

  • Revision B with better binary loader in the tiff (25 september)
    • Changed the binary loader to use the one from tiffsdk 1.1 that has better stability.
    • No changes on the core.

Download below.

Holy Revision B Batman! A new version of the Homebrew Enabler, a DevHook Launcher port, all for firmware 2.71?! This sounds like the work of Sony super villain, Dark_AleX!

Very cool stuff actually. Now users with FW 2.71 are able to utilize DevHook and emulate firmware 1.50. HEN Revision B is installed in the same manner as the initial release; however, if you have previously installed Rev. A you should follow these basic instructions:

To update from HEN revision A to B, hard reset your psp (to make sure that hen is not running).
Then copy the new files to the memory stick and run the tif. The new files will be automatically updated.

Once you’re ready to rock at Rev. B you may proceed with the ported DevHook launcher:

  • You need Homebrew Enabler for 2.71 revision B (minimum) to run this port.
  • Get the files to emulate firmwares yourself. (see below)
  • Run the pbp with the title “Devhook 0.4X launcher for 2.71″. The 1.50 launcher is also included because in the emulated 1.50 you can launch it.

DevHook v0.45 is included with the ported Launcher RAR package, unfortunately v0.46 has some issues when it comes to emulating firmware 1.50. Please ensure you read over both ‘readme’ files before proceeding and asking questions.

Have fun TA-082ers. :)

Ok, I’m a noob here, but I thought that there were no downgraders for TA-O82 mobos? For those of us who were unfortunate enough to buy one of these PSPs, is this the software that we’ve been waiting for? Will this allow us to play homebrew *and* launch ISOs? Please, tell me its so!

will this work with 2.6 ta-082 or do i have to upgrade to 2.71?

Comment by Captain Primate
2006-09-24 14:47:46

So, correct me if I’m wrong (apologies for the noon-ness)…this *emulates* a downgraded PSP (FW 1.5) opposed to actually downgrading it (which is currently impossile with TA-082s)…right?

Comment by Justin
2006-09-24 14:49:03

Upgrade it says ” users with FW 2.71 are able to utilize DevHook and emulate firmware 1.50 ”
so i would update and do what the instructions say to do

i allready got 1.5 but this is so good doesnt matter if u have 1.5 ore 2.71 anymore its just what fw u want 2 startwhit and what fw u want 2 emulate if i shudent have a 1.5 i would use this 2 emulate 1.5 i mean its no diff its just what u want 2 emulate

This is a big step 4 all TA-082:s and other 2.71:ers that dont want 2 take the risk whit downgrading i allready half briked my psp once so if i sometime gonna need 2 upgrade 2 2.71 (like if i half birck it agin) i will use this

I have a TA-082 with fw 2.6
I upgraded to 2.71 and then loaded HEN multiple times, it finally worked!! Now i can run ISO’s and kick ass homebrew. Great job to everyone who helped. I think the only thing that’d help would be if they made either a more sucessful HEN (like a 75-90% chance of it loading) or a HEN that is permanent…

Not to be rude but there are readme files with the devhook, you really should read them sometime, But since your lazy put the stuff in the MSROOT folder in guess what thats right the msroot, which is the first thing when you open the folder with the psp. Go ahead and throw src there as well.

The “the game could not be started”(80020148) is suppose to be there and to trick the kernel system or something.(not quite sure how to say it.)

It seems like u have successfully launch the progam, can u teach me?

Hi, I am one of those newbs who wasnt very sure how to operate this either.

My psp is TA-082 2.6==>2.71

To what i understand i have to:

1) Install HEN B — Check
2) Copy DevHook port launcher to psp — Check
3) Copy FW 1.50 dumper to the dh/150 file –Check
4) Start Devhook Launcher 4.X — Check

…..and now i m stuck. I tried emulating 1.50 but it just shuts down and reset. Then i have to repeat 1-4 again.

Am i missing something.

It says in the Readme that the tiff is very unstable and that Dark_Alex may try to stabilize it. Here’s to hoping he does.

I also can’t get this update working. I had the first HEN running fine, then I did the update mode and it freezes everytime I enter into the HEN folder on my PSP. If I try the pulling out the battery technique, it still freezes at the same part.

Oh well, I can wait until a more stable version of the tiff is out.

now if only someone would reverse engineer haleyg’s custom firmware so 2.71ers can alternatively emulate 1.5 without having to start devhook manually, just a thought, i have 1.5 with emulated 2.71

#22 read some of the earlier posts, they do have a downgrader for 2.5 ta-082 but you have to do alot of work to get it done, you use a program it makes files you have to send to someone else (creater of the downgrader) and then he sends you back the files you need and from there it is cake

Hen just seems too unstable…
The eloader will run up for me every time on my TA-82 2.71, but Hen, like I said before will load up the blue screen about once every 30 tries or so, but even when it gets to the blue screen, the psp turns itself off. Obviously it just isn’t as stable as the eloader, and hopefully if a HenC comes out, that will actually work for me…

MS_ROOT = The Root Of Ur MEM Stick..
Mine would be
E:/(THIS IS THE ROOT)/PSP/GAME

Ok, here are a couple of things hat I’ve learned from screwing around with HEN/Devhook/FW Dump. This is mainly for the noobs (of which I am one):

(1) I get the TIFF to launch properly about once every five or six tries. My PSP either restarts on its own (after freezing for awhile), it freezes and I have to reboot by pulling the battery, or it actually works (blue scree then restart)

(2) The “the game could not be started”(80020148)” error seems to happen when you don’t have HEN enabled, and you try to launch devhook

(3) ISOs go in a directory (which you create – I called mine “ISO”) in the root of the memory stick. If you simply stick the ISOs in the root, DH won’t see them.

hope this helps some of the screaming noobs out there. My hope is that a new, more stable, TIFF is released – otherwise it really isn’t worth my time.

ok, I’ve got a question. When I *do* actually get everything to run and load up DH, my PSP restarts every time I try to launch an ISO. I’ve tried the options several differnt ways. First, selecting 1.5 Firmware, then selecting the ISO, and then choosing start. I’ve tried choosing the ISO, then setting the firmware, and then choosing start. All ends up the same way – with my PSP restarting. Anyone have any advice?

Ok. I am a newbie too but with some reading, I was able to figure out what to do. I had TA-082 with FW2.6

Here are the steps I took:
1) Upgrade your FM to 2.71 if not 2.71 already
2) Install Henb – Copy all MS_ROOT into my PSP Root
3) Copy Everything under MS_ROOT from DV271 into my PSP Root.
4) Launched HenB from Photo. Got the Green & Blue screen(I had to reformatted my memory stick to get this to work). Launched DH0.4x

Here’s the problem. When I press circle to start DH0.4x, my PSP goes black and then shuts off. What did I do wrong?

Ok now listen turn on your psp back up ur MS
now format it

in a folder on ur comp (call it X) xtract the hen and devhook zips
there and click yes to overwrite

now xtract 1.50 dump to MS_ROOT\dh\150
and yes to overwrite

now in x\MS_root folder add a folder caled iso (U put ISOs here)

now select everything in the X\MS_ROOT\
and copy it to the root of ur MS (the base fo your MS)
get hen to run.(IE blue then green) each time after the first
it will just go blue and restart that means it worked
now on the psp xbm go to game\Memory Stick\DEVHOOK0.4X launcher for 2.71
hit x there you go devhook is running !!!!!

Seink’s Quick newb guide to using HEN Rev. B and DevHook Launcher for 2.71!

INSTALLATION(when connecting to computer with usb)

1) install HEN Rev. B (Drag and drop everthing from the MS_ROOT file and paste it inside your psp drive(just make sure everything from the psp folder is in your current psp folder.)

P.S. You have to reformat if u have HEN A installed before.

2) install DevHook(drag and drop everything from the MS_ROOTa nd paste it inside your psp drive(just make sure everything from the psp folder is in your current psp folder.)

3) install FW1.50 dump.(Drag and drop flash0 & flash1 &reboot.bin==>dh==>150 and overwrite everything.)

OPERATION(after turn on psp)

4)Go to photo viewer and enter HEN.You have to repeat this process until there is either a blue or green screen(Freezes and red screen means unsuccessful patching, retry UNTIL there is blue or green screen). After a blue/green screen, psp will reboot and ure done!

P.S. When psp freezes, push the power switch up until the psp resets. Also, the program randomly suceeds.u can succeed with 1st try or with 20 tries.

5)go to memory stick and and click on DevHook 4.X Launcher.

6)In DEVHOOK, UMD select game ISO, FW select 1.50. then click start.(YOUR ISO SHOULD BE IN THE ISO FOLDER AND AT THE BASE OF YOUR MEMORY STICK.if u dont have iso folder, make one by urself.)

P.S. Navigation process of the DEVHooK is covered in the readme files.Pls make sure u read every readme file.

Further Trouble Shooting

MS_ROOT == MP_ROOT == BASE DRIVE OF YOUR PSP.(c/d/e:\ of your removable storage that has PSP folder.)

From the README Files:
When going from firmware 2.71 to 1.50, you will get the error “Couldn’t start game”.

I made this highly detailed guide becoz new users, such as i, are unfamiliar with the notations.TA-082 users pls shout out thanks to dear programmers for their devotion and work to make using iso a reality~~~!

Just helped my new friend Carlos install everything on his TA-082 – in case it has not been confirmed, I can now confirm that this new hack does work perfectly fine on TA-082 motherboards. And does work for loading your ISO backups ;) For all the noobs, if you want to load an ISO backup, you’ll probably need to emulate FW 2.0 or higher instead of FW 1.5. FW 1.5 will mostly be used to run your homebrew applications and games. Happy hacking everyone, and thank you Dark_AleX.

I have a TA-082 and the HEN B works on my psp. The only problem is that it takes about 30 tries running the tiff file before the thing works.

As for the devhook it loads but cannot go into emulation of 2.71 or 1.50. It just shuts off after i hit starts which forces me to go back to running the HEN B thing again and trying another 30 times before it works. So far i’ve only gotten to devhook to load only 4 times and every time no luck running the goods.

They say that when you suceed at something that eludes you for a long time, the satisfaction you feel in the accomplishment is great, and so it is.

For people who have copied the 1.5FW to the corresponding folder in the dh\150 folder, know that there should be 4 things you should be able to see when in there( G:\dh\150 in my case), the readme.txt file, 2 folders entitled flash0 and flash1, and finally a file named reboot.bin. The lack of reboot.bin threw me off good, but i noticed that greg said he updated it on some post up there, so i redownloaded the dump, opened the .rar, and saw it in there. so i re-copied the whole thing over again and this time it worked. Hope this helps others out there.

Please check the Download->Utilities section for an easy installer of Devhook that includes 2.71FW. Now you may be asking, huh? why should I emulate FW 2.71 when I am already running FW 2.71? The answer is if you want to run backup ISO’s, you have to use FW 2.0 or higher as most games out these days require FW 2.0 or higher to run. And the only way to run backup ISO’s is to run them through the Devhook emulation of FW 2.0 or higher (the easy installer includes FW 2.71). So instead of loading FW 1.5 in Devhook, load FW 2.0 or higher (ex. 2.71) to run the backup ISO’s. Hope that helps. Peace.

And so the answer to Dark_AleX Lover’s question above is YES, you can emulate FW 2.6 if you put the 2.6 firmware dump in the proper folders inside the dh folder. And to clarify, the Easy Devhook installer mentioned above includes a Devhook that is for FW 1.5. Ignore this, all you want is the FW 2.71 dump files which are automatically installed in the correct place. Then you run the Devhook for 2.71, not the Devhook for 1.5. Got it? Great!! Later!!

I didn’t have any luck running Hen B in 512mb, always freeze, however a freshly formatted 32mb runs Hen B like a charm. Works on first try w/ a few exceptions (3 – 4 tries at most). I first copy a game into the memory stick ISO (G:/ISO) directory. Set the firmware to load 2.71 (assuming you have the firmware copied in there), and also 333 mhz. Once you hit start, you need a game inside the psp.

I was able to load Dev Hook, I put my backup ISO to my ISO folder which is located with the MS_Root and PSP folder. I loaded using fw 2.71, 333mhz, restart xmb and press start, soon crashes and I have to start the Hen thing all over again! Help!

i am using a Jap version psp.

i downloaded the jap 1.5fw dump. this does not work when using devhook to emulate firmware.

i see that the US version was missing the reebot.bin file.

after checking with the JAP file it also is missing this file.

anyway can i use the US 1.5 firmware dump with devhook instead.

please help.

OK I managed to download the correct fw1.50 dump from here now by manually selecting a proxy to use. Turns out it was my ISP’s transparent proxy causing the problem (and it wouldn’t even bypass it by pressing shift/ctrl and refresh like it’s supposed to)

I finally managed to get ISOs working on my TA-082 PSP (Spiderman2 in particular). It runs full speed just like a UMD game. Bravo Dark Alex.

I’ll try and post the exact steps to be followed :

1. Download the HENB2 rar file from dark alex website – http://dax.lan.st/henb2.rar

2. Download the DevHook and the 1.5 FW from the links given in the post above.

3. Unzip the HENB and the DevHook to the proper folders in the PSP (Just following the folder heirarchy i.e. copy all files in the PSP/ directory to the PSP/ directory of your memory stick, etc.)

3. Unzip the contents of the 1.5 FW in the dh/150 directory of your memory stick

4. Make a ISO folder in the parent directory of your PSP folder in your memory stick. This is the root directory of your memory stick. Copy all you game ISOs here.

5. On the PSP’s main menu, go to the PHOTO directory and enter the HEN2 folder. Your PSP would turn BLUE and then reset itself.

6. Go to the GAME directory on the main menu of the PSP and go to the Memory Stick. Launch the ‘DEVHOOK0.4X launcher for 2.71′ app from there.

7. Put in a game UMD in your PSP.

8. People have written about setting the CPU speed to 333Mhz. I just selected the ISO from the ISO sub-menu and pressed the START button.

9. An ‘Unable to load game’ message would appear (or a message similar to that). Nothing to worry about. This SHOULD happen (I think)

10. You now should have your PSP main menu displayed. (Check the firmware. You should have version 1.50 showing up.) Try loading up a game as you would from an UMD (Game->UMD) and you shall find that your ISO loads up.

I spent a long time trying to run WWE 2006 unsuccessfully. Then I tried Spiderman2 coz it should run on a FW 1.50 and it worked. If one of your ISOs does not load try loading something else. I’ll try and keep posting about my successes and failures.

Hope that helps. :)

Okay, I can get HENB running fine, I install Devhook and I run it once. Then I go to select the 1.5FW and nothing happens so I exit out of Devhook, then, when I try to enter it again, it always says that “the game could not be loaded” Any ideas what’s going on?

Much thanks everyone (is there an IRC channel I could go to also?)

This is how I got HENB, DevHook, 1.5FW emulated and ISOs working on my TA-082 2.71FW PSP.

1.)Format your memory stick (back up any game saves/movies/pictures you want to keep.

2.)Get the HENB rar from this site and download it, save it to your Hard drive.

3.)Connect your PSP to your PC via USB and open up the PSP directory.

4.)Open up the HENB rar. Drag the folder SRC into the Memory stick ROOT folder. Open up MS_ROOT select all the files and drag them to the Memory stick ROOT folder, replace all the files it asks you to.

5.)Download the DevHook rar and open it up. Drag the SRC folder into the Memory Stick ROOT, click yes when it asks you about replacing the folder. Wait for all files to transfer.

6.)Get the 1.5FW Dump from this site, save it to your Hard Drive.

7.)Navigate to the Devhook folder, called “dh” then open the folder “150” in the 1.5FW rar, copy the folders “flash0” and flash1” to the 150 folder on the PSP’s memory stick. Do the same for the file Reboot.bin.

8.)Disconnect the PSP from your PC. Go over to the Photo menu, open up the HEN folder and your screen will freeze for a second then go blue, your PSP will restart, HEN is now loaded.

9.)Go to the GAME menu and open the Memory Stick and navigate to DEVHOOK.4X launcher for 2.71. Select it and DEVHOOK will load.

10.) Now in Devhook, move to FIRMWARE and press the O button, select 1.50 and press O again. Move to start and press O, your PSP should load up and the message “The game could not be started (80010002) should be seen, press O then there you go, you are now emulating 1.5FW.

11.)Now to load ISOs. Connect your PSP to your PC once again and create a folder in the Memory Stick Root called “ISO”. Drag and drop the ISO(s) you wish. Disconnect the PSP and navigate to the Game Menu.

12.)Select DEVHOOK0.46 launcher and watch it load.

13.)Go to UMD SELECT, and select the UMD you want to load, then you can choose if you want to load it from a UMD in your PSP or without. Select whichever you want, it makes no difference.

14.)Select START in DEVHOOK and you will be brought back to the GAME menu, go up to the UMD and you will see the Game you selected in DEVHOOK there.

Good luck, hope this helps!

Ok, I’ve got an error/bug that I don’t think anyone has mentioned. I get HEN B installed fine, I get Devhook installed fine. Boot into DH, switch the FW to 1.5, and then choose the start option. My PSP immediately shuts down, and doesn’t start up for about 1-2 minutes. When it does start up, the screen background color has turned pink. Whenever I hit *any* of the buttons, the screen goes completely black. When I hit any of the buttons after its gone black, I can still hear the button hit sound (so I know the psp ins’t actually turned off). after about a minute or so, the screen turns back on again (only to go black if I hit a button).

Anyone have an idea?

Hmmm, I hope you didn’t screw up your firmware somehow. Don’t see how you could of, as Devhook doesn’t write to flash, unless something went wrong with the HenB and you saw its effects after your restarted your PSP. I’m not sure what to tell you. Try booting a umd disk if possible, or (though I know you wouldn’t want to) a firmware update may clear up the problem (or ruin your psp if something is wrong in your flash). I am not a hundred percent sure with what the problem would be, so everything I said is all guesses. Maybe someone else has had this problem before and fixed it?

Comment by Captain Primate
2006-09-25 21:54:43

When I reboot (thereby removing HENB) everything works just fine – so my firmware wasn’t screwed up. Its just when I use DH that I have the problem – oh well. At least my PSP isn’t screwed ;-)

This appears to work but only allow me to play older games written for just FW1.5. Newer games appear to require newer FW emulation. Here is a hint to get those games working that require a firmware update: Go to the store, pick up a copy of the game, put the game in your psp and BAM, you no longer have to steal money from other companies to play your games ;)

I don’t get you people…. you’ll go out and spend a ton of money on a pro duo and a psp, but you can’t afford a game every now and then…just pitiful…

Everythings here, thanks to BlackRain and Muppetman

http://muppetman555.spymac.com/root1.rar

open and place all files in on your psp *

u will also need a ISO place into the ISO folder *any umd iso*

load hen *blue screen flashes* it may freez on blue screen, just hard reset
then place any umd into the umd drive *any will work*
go to devhook 2.71
*program launches*
go to firmware, select fw 1.5
go to umd, select your ISO, not the umd, and select “image + anyumd”
then go and start
your psp will restart
shows “game couldn not start”, press 0

now check your firmware
1.5
now go to game, and memory stick
load devhook .46 launcher *not 2.71*
now go to firmware select
select fw 2.71
go to umd slect
select the iso u have in the ISO folder
*no option will appear*
then go to start

the ISO should now load… there you go

for people that want to emulate 2.71. the dump file can be found at http://rapidshare.de/files/27505776/UI_v1.1.1.exe.html ( it is from the forum, just download that file and extract it on ur HD.
and then go to “dh” then “271″ folder and put it in the correct place, U can have both 1.5 and 2.71 on ur psp mem stick. then u can pick whichever one u want to boot up)

I don’t know if anyone else is having trouble with this issue, but after HEN B launches successfully, I almost always get a freeze on the blue screen. If I hard reset (as you suggested), DevHook *will not* launch. It seems that things will only work properly if you don’t get a freeze after you launch HEN B, and the PSP restarts on its own.

If I use Devhook to emulate 1.5 fw what is the next step? Do I need different emulators now? Emulators that only work on 1.5 and not the 2.6 ones I currently have?

@281: If you can get a fw2.6 dump, you can just have Devhook emulate that.

Oh man, it’s really a dream come true for us TA-082ers!
I tried blackrain/muppetman’s step-by-step procedure and worked on a first try, and it did work everytime.
I just noticed that everytime I closed a game(iso) the firmware flashes back to 2.71 but it’s on the other profile (with a psp-hacks wallpaper), but it’s ok now at least we have this great hack!
Now I still have another question, how can I play homebrews using this hack? please another step-by-step procedure will be much apprecuated. Thanks to HEN Rev. B (Dax?)

@292

Emulate firmware 1.50 first by using blackrain/muppetman’s instructions (reproduced here for convenience):

As long as you put your homebrew directories is in the correct directory (I think it’s under ms0:\PSP\GAMES or something like that), you should be able to see them and run them. I got PSP Chess running easily.

Awesome!! Works everytime!!! Thanks Dark_Angel!!!!!

Also thanks to lack Black Rain and Muppetman.

I could not have enjoyed my PSP this much without your hard work.

Those of you having a hard time, try this, worked for me every time:

backup your mem card
format your mem card
upgrade to 2.71, if you have not done so already

look up comment on this page by Black Rain
follow his instructions to a “T”
do not improvise or second guess the directions, do exactly what he says, it will work.

Enjoy!!

@316, I also have a 2.6 ta-082, I used to use the TIFF loaders and loved them. After upgrading to 2.71, not 2.7 I could still do everything that I was able to before, plus run some 1.5 homebrew while in 1.5 mode, plus more!!!

Just read my post @315 and have fun.

Seriously all this new tools has been great
but i think hackers should now focus on how to by pass Ta-082 and non Ta-082 2.7fw and make 2.7 accept homebrew and run iso and do everything 1.5 does rather always trying to bring up some new tools to downgrade to 1.5 i *maybe* not a psp hacker but o0rk, dark alex, fanjita and etc this is the challenge

hi,
following blackrain’s details
load hen *blue screen flashes* it may freez on blue screen, just hard reset
then place any umd into the umd drive *any will work*
go to devhook 2.71
*program launches*
go to firmware, select fw 1.5
go to umd, select your ISO, not the umd, and select “image + anyumd”
then go and start
your psp will restart
shows “game couldn not start”, press 0

But when ‘go and start’ the psp just turns itself off, regardless whether umd in or not.

What am i missing???!

Thanks

If you’re only interested in playing backup ISO’s, you DO NOT need to run FW 1.5. I don’t know why there are all these instructions telling people to load FW 1.5 just to load devhook 0.46 to load FW 2.71. All you need to do is run devhook 2.71 and load FW 2.71. You can download FW 2.71 from the following link:

http://rapidshare.de/files/27505776/UI_v1.1.1.exe.html

I think that file is clean, but you might want to check it for viruses, etc.

Here are some instructions taken from an earlier post, modified and simplified for people who just want to load backup ISO’s:

This is how I got HENB, DevHook 2.71, 2.71 FW emulated and ISOs working on my TA-082 2.71FW PSP.

6.)Get the 2.71FW Dump from this site, save it to your Hard Drive.

7.)Copy the 2.71 FW files to the dh/271 folder on the PSP’s memory stick.

8.)Disconnect the PSP from your PC. Go over to the Photo menu, open up the HEN folder and your screen will freeze for a second then go blue, your PSP will restart, HEN is now loaded.

9.)Now to load ISOs. Connect your PSP to your PC once again and create a folder in the Memory Stick Root called “ISO”. Drag and drop the ISO(s) you wish. Disconnect the PSP and navigate to the Game Menu.

10.)Go to the GAME menu and open the Memory Stick and navigate to DEVHOOK.4X launcher for 2.71. Select it and DEVHOOK will load.

11.) Now in Devhook, move to FIRMWARE and press the O button, select 2.71 and press O again.

12.)Go to UMD SELECT, and select the ISO you want to load, then select “image + anyumd”.

13.)Select START in DEVHOOK and you will be brought back to the GAME menu, go up to the UMD and you will see the Game you selected in DEVHOOK there.

Good luck, hope this helps!
