Homebrew mini-SDK for FW v2.0-v2.8 with Demo

greg | September 13, 2006

As you may or may not know, due to extra security FW 2.00-2.80 is currently restricted to a limited a space when it comes to homebrew via the libTIFF exploit — it differs from the standard EBOOT platform. Nonetheless, if you’re a 2.80 user, don’t feel left out just yet; the fine folks over at “Noobz” have put together a wonderful SDK package allowing you to port certain/simple applications to the TIFF environment. Here, the readme.txt explains it best:

This package contains expanded source for the TIFF Tetris binary, plus instructions and information on how to adapt it for other applications. We’ve tried to make the porting process as painless as possible, but you will require a good working knowledge of standard PSP programming using the PSPSDK.

The binaries you build with this package can be used to directly replace the tetris.bin files in the TIFF Tetris release, and should work on any firmware that can run the TIFF exploit (i.e. v2.0 – v2.8).

This package is intended to allow simple apps to be developed for v2.70+ firmwares, while the eLoader is being finished. We expect that there will be some delay until the eLoader can be made to work on v2.8, so it would be nice if there was a small library of simple homebrew for the v2.8 users while they wait.

The readme goes on to explain the TIFF loader environment as well as other technical details to release your own [ported] applications.

I consider this a great step forward as it seems to be the common cycle we’ve all experienced with past firmware hacks and exploits. So great job guys – looking forward to the new eLoader!

Oh, and that’s not it! All you 2.80 users, here’s your first hands-on experience with non-flash homebrew — Tetris for 2.80! Fetch both the SDK and Tetris below.

My little history:

1.5–>my son broke the screen–>buy the screen& another 1.5psp–>went to the beach last summer, my son put sand all over the first psp, sent it to sony–>they upgraded it to 2.5–>downgrade 2.5 to 1.5 & buy “neo2in1 converter”(btw it suck4.0gb micro)–>I gave as a birthday to my brother the first psp i bought with neoconverter–>buy another psp for me 1.5 with 4.0gb memory stick–>my sons battery ran out, he used my psp and he upgraded to 2.80 “by mistake” yeah right.. so now i’m using his :)

I’m just sharing my sad story… I should listen to my mom when she said don’t have kids….

It seems like the tetris game only works if copied into \psp\photo\ and not in \picture\
It is very fine, only one “complaint”: the drop button should be X :-))
GREAT STUFF!

Could be it takes awhile to load because I had it happening to me earlier, when I thought it froze up. Try to reload it if you already powered off.

Update to my previous post: It appears that after the light stops blinking when you load Tetris the first time, you need to turn it off then turn it back on. (at least on my PSP) After turn it back on, load up Tetris again and it will work. Be aware that if you make a mistake by loading a Movie instead, you’ll have to do the 2 steps again.

Addition to #10 since I can’t edit: whoops, I forgot other things too relating to the Movie deal (such as loading other images)

Also, for those having trouble, it appears you can’t have two apps using the TIFF exploit in your photo folder at the same time, even if the apps are in their own folders. If you have PSP/PHOTO/HELLOWORLD and /TETRIS then the helloworld will run every time you open the photo folder. also, after you first transfer the file to your mspd and open photo your PSP will turn off. Just start it back up and then open your photo folder again and the app will start up.

It took me a few tries…maybe 5 or so. The PSP kept freezing up which required me to reboot it. It eventually loaded right up.

Update to post #12

Ok, I can’t say that “you can’t have two apps using the TIFF exploit in your photo folder at the same time” because all I have are HELLOWORLD and TETRIS.

If HELLOWORLD is in your /PHOTO/HELLOWORLD directory then it will run regardless of what else is in there. I dont know how to avoid it. If you want to run TETRIS though HELLOWORLD must be off your memory stick. However, if you have TETRIS then you have no real use for HELLOWORLD.

TETRIS does not run as soon as you access PSP/PHOTO. I don’t know why it behaves differently than HELLOWORLD. However as soon as you access the TETRIS folder it runs. You don’t have to run the TIFF file itself.

@12 – I’m new to the homebrew scene, so I know very little at the moment, but I’m assuming that helloworld executed immediately because it’s listed alphabetically, and the helloworld one doesn’t have a jpg in that folder, so it’s using the tif file for the thumbnail. Perhaps if a jpg were in there it’d load instead of the tif *shrug*.

ALL U GUYS ARE FAKE I GOT IT TO WORK ON MY 2.8 FIRST EXTRACT THE ZIP FILE TETRIS280 TO YOUR DESKTOP THEN OPEN UP TETRIS280 YOU SHOULD SEE THE PSP FOLDER OPEN UP THE PSP FOLDER THEN YOU SHOULD SEE PHOTO AND STOP THERE. NOW FIND THE DRIVE TO YOUR PSP. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO PUT IT IN THE PICTURE FILE INSTEAD OPEN UP THE PSP FILE,NOW YOU COULD DRAG AND DROP THE PHOTO FILE ONTO YOUR PSP…HOPES THIS HELPS AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKED

In addition to #15. Yeah, I guessed right. According to the readme in the SDK released, there must be another image file in the directory with the tif, and the tif’s modification time must be dated later than the other image.

I suggest a loading guide for those who thought they couldn’t get it working. I do admit, I haven’t been in the PSP homebrew community that long, I’m willing to help though.

Heres what the guide should include, as I posted in my previous posts (10 and 11):

1. Extract Tetris (don’t need to include, involves common sense. Make sure you leave the directories as they are)
2. Turn on the PSP
3. Head over to the photos, open it then open Tetris folder.
4. When you see the light stop blinking, hold the power button till it turns off (if its frozen). You may need to wait a few moments before it truly turns off.
5. Turn on the PSP
6. Goto photos again and open Tetris. It will now run. (Becareful loading another file, otherwise, you will need to repeat steps 1-5 again).

Enjoy.

@#41

Finally, this thing works!!! Thanks for the tip Mick. Otherwise, I would be convinced that this PSP was cursed!

I also have no problem going from game to PSP menu (Start, then Home viet_mode)

PS – While typing this, PSP started to freeze up again (this thing has a personality). Just cycled through options after pressing triangle, then go back to “Slideshow” and selected it.

Not a perfect app, but much better than nothing. Cheers to Noobz!! My PSP is fun again. Can’t wait until that downloader is available!

PS-2 – Tetris is cool, but bores after 5 min. Please programmers make one that has features and goes faster as more lines be comes stacked. Tanks!

Ya, well i think that ateast a few ppl should atleast try to make this ta-082 downgrader because every one is pretty much waiting for that cz pong on 2.8 is nothing compared to 1.5 with devhook. And especially that Devhook will have 2.8 soon. I wuld be pissed if I had 2.8 or a TA-082 but since i have 1.5 im not that pissed but my friend has TA-082 and i really wanna play against him in a few games ive downloaded.

and again http://www.torrentspy.com Srry that site RULES especially for xxx
