Firmware 2.81 Released

greg | September 7, 2006

Firmware 2.81 is here, and it’s certainly not worth the upgrade. Of course, if you decide to upgrade for whatever reason, please remember you’ll be left 100% homebrew-less for the moment; this version patches the recently discovered libTIFF exploit.

Good news – Dark_AleX’s modified psar dumper is able to successfully decrypt 2.81 also!

We have all the 2.81 FW updates (US, JP, EU, UK, etc…) available in our downloads area – here.

but if you really think about it, y does sony even bother with the update if it doesn’t have anything new. anyone with a brain won’t be updating to something that only takes away some of the very few freedoms the previous updates missed. the only people that would update don’t even need it because all it does is prevent them from doing something they don’t do and probably never will. thanks for yet another meaningless update sony, good work (not really)

Something that people fail to realize is that it’s Sony’s responsibility to release updates to fix ANY bugs that could possibly be used maliciously.

Homebrewers give themselves way too much credit.
These fixes are no different than a Windows update to fix a security vulnerability. They would be neglegent to their customers to NOT fix the problem. They really couldn’t care less if any 1.5er uses the upgrade or not.

well, in 2.80 we could execute code, but there was no kernel access. now in 2.81 there’s no way to do anything yet.
the good news is that ecryption keys from 2.80 to 2.81 haven’t changed, so this means 2.81 possibly can be devhooked.
Since 2.81 can be devhooked, $ony must make another fw version. they’re screwed again.

@25 what the fuck is ur problem with sony, what they are doing sucks, but they don’t. if u have a psp, then u paid 250 (oor mabey 200 now) for something that came from a company that u says sucks ass? who else thinks that the ps3 sucks? i don’t. and @ 24, how could something like the tiff exploit be used maliciously? it could only be used be the person with the psp. no one that it would afect anyway (tiff) would update, so like i said before, whats the damn point of it sony?

It could be used maliciously by some ass who makes a bricker from it then gives it to an unsuspecting person, who throws picture on their PSP, naively believing that it would do something cool.
Recall the 2.0->1.5 downgrader that was actually a bricker?
It could even be used maliciously by putting up a bricker on web sites, as a “cool new wallpaper”. And probably more things that I’m not corrupt enough to think about.

Think man!!

I bet you 99% of Windows updates are to things that would never effect the average user. That’s really not the point. The point is that it’s a security risk, and it’s their responsibility to fix it.

u have proved your point, but who lets someone else put mess with their psp, who would download a wallpaper without seeing it, and stop using windows as an example, if any company sucks (refering to post 25) its microsoft.

This is great. Well at least the part about 2.81 already being decrypted :)

The reason why this 2.81 has NO new features is for people who don’t read up on PSP’s before they get one will automaticly go to Sony’s website and upgrade then they’ll be kicking themselves after they learn about homebrew, etc.

It’s pretty simple it’s just Sony trying to cover its own ass.

They want to make as much money as possible thats all the PSP was ever created for anyways and they don’t want you using any type of “homebrew” since you didn’t give them money for it.

Comment by Snarg
2006-09-07 17:10:43

Dude, until you’ve done some developing, you don’t begin to realize just how stupid the average person is, and how much they really do need to be protected from themselves! Which is exactly why using Windows as an example is perfect (the average user uses windows), you see, you are among about what 2% of home users that don’t use Windows for personal computing, it would be like me saying don’t say Linux, I use OS2.

People need to be protected from themselves, you’d bang your head off a wall in frustration, if you’d seen some of the things that people try.

And that’s what the update is for, not because they care about a decrypter, or downgrader. I would be willing to bet a tonne of money, that even if the exploit wasn’t capable of producing a downgrader, it would have still been patched (although I’m willing to admit, that it may not have been as quick).

You have to understand that for every 1 person ‘in the know’ who doesn’t update there will be another 1000 people who do. I mean, if you weren’t using the PSP for homebrew then why wouldn’t you upgrade on the next game you buy?

It just means that when ‘Johnny Know-nothing’ hears about PSP hacking from one of his friends in the future it will be too late for him :(

If the average person is stupid enough to screw himself over, then maybe we should let them screw themselves over so they can pick themselves up and learn not to fall. and if they can’t do that then they don’t deserve their psp

Buffer overflow exploits are pretty major problems, it would be irresponsible of Sony not to fix it…

Afterall you wouldn’t want to put what you thought was a naked picture of Angelina Jolie on your PSP just to find out that it was piggybacking code to brick your PSP.

I agree with you, the person would have to be an idiot (or young and naive) but that’s not really the point. It’s cheaper for Sony to implement a one line code change to fix the size of an array than it is to reflash and then mail back 10,000 idiot’s PSPs.

So as a direct answer to your question: ‘I wouldn’t, you wouldn’t, nobody who knows anything about PSP’s would – but that’s not everybody’. Now if it was a picture of Thora Birch then that’s a different matter…..

Comment by Snarg
2006-09-07 18:12:10

I imagine many people would.
Here’s how it would go.
Try to open file in Windows, get error saying it’s not a valid file, then throw it on PSP thinking that maybe it only works there.

You see you’re basing your view on the assumption that anybody and everybody even knows that you can screw up your PSP just by looking at a picture. I’d be surprised if 1 in 100 PSP users actually knows that.

Homebrwers are a very small percentage of the overall PSP crowd.

It’s only stupid to do something if you know better and do it anyways. And just because YOU know better about something, it doesn’t automatically mean that everyone in the world now does.

Did you know that I can compromise your privacy simply by sending you an email with an embedded image? Why do you think that Hotmail disables images in e-mails? Most people don’t know that, but for me it’s “common sense”.

People just think way too 2 dimensional.

Since image tags in HTML can point to any location, simply viewing an image can let spammers know that you’ve seen it, as well as giving them access to other information from the http header (your ip address for example).

Comment by :+:DuRdEn:+:
2006-09-07 18:26:32

If Sony were really clever they could release dummy firmwares that when unpacked and run through devhook, actually closed the holes in the PSP that allowed it to run!

But we won’t get there…..

It’s legal (legal in the programming sense, of course it’s “legal”)to use a program as an image

img src=”http://someURL/someprogram”

The program generates and outputs an image, heck it can even be a 1pixel x 1pixel transparent image, so you don’t even know it loaded, and at the same time, it sets a tracking cookie, logs your IP address, and verifies that the e-mail address is valid, and auto sends it to as many spam lists as the programmer wants it to. Bam just by opening one e-mail you’re now being tracked, and just doubled the amount of spam you’re going to get every day.

I not only know about this, I even know how to DO this, I once even wrote a tracker avatar, and started tracking forum members, just for an experiment. (I didn’t set them up to be spammed, just made some log files for testing purposes).
So you see, that’s why I say it’s only “common sense” if you actually know better. And that’s a perfect example for you why you should never have images enabled for unknown e-mails (and why some forums only allow avatars/signature pics ending with a proper file extension), but I bet almost nobody actually knows that, just as almost no “regular” PSP user would even imagine that they could kill their PSP just by looking at a picture, and thus the NEED for the update.

I just never download homebrew off anywhere I don’t trust like if you use a well known site thats got populated forums like this one the chances of getting a “bricker virus” is pretty slim.

new bugs in 2.81 that weren’t in 2.71
no tiff images are diplayed; all are corrupted
sleep mode bug: play music and then put it to sleep. wake it up, and the music is corrupted, where in 2.71, it would pause
formatting the memory stick causes it to be unreadable by the computer

and so much more!
remeber, its only been out a day and all these bugs were found!

to upgrade or not to upgrade that is the question. Well it is really up to you. Sure there is the security fix but the psp fw does get better like the ability to put a mp4 in the video folder without any special way. Also of course the use of bigger memory sticks. Honestly its good to have two psp’s one with 1.5 and one with the most up to date for testing purposes. But I’m not worried hackers will always prevail hell did we ever think there would be 2.6 downgrader let alone a 2.71 downgradrer homebrew on a 2.80 psp my god. I’m not worried with 2.80 dumped and supposedly 2.81 will be dumped via devhook this is going to be an exciting time with the psp

What does it say about Sony when they put out games on “Universal” Media Discs which are only used by the PSP, yet they are universal. Hackers had found a way to run these same games off of the memory stick. As far as I know this is better in every way. You can play multiple games without changing discs, they load faster and the PSP’s charge lasts longer. If copying PSP games is their big beef, why isn’t Sony putting their enrgy into legitimately running games off the memory stick? That would be because they’re clinging to the business model which has held true since the dawn of console games: Make people overpay for packaging and at the same time control distribution. They clearly don’t have the gamers’ interests in mind making moves like this.

I’ve been telling this into many forums and im sure lots ppl did the same.. what I’ve always said is..

everytime sony came out with a firmware .1 (1.51, 2.01,2.71 and now 2.81 is because there was a exploit in the recent firmware. 1.50 had kernal, 2.00 and the TIF exploit, 2.70??? DUNNO! lolll and 2.80 has just like many others.. TIFF exploit. So we now from now on.. if we see (.1) in a firmware version.. that there is something, somewhere. Plz ppl do not upgrade! Even if you think that it is a good idea.. let me tell you this.. IT IS NOT!

love my 1.50!

Stewart! -

No offense, but you’re completely clueless in regards to the progress of the conversation.
You’re taking bits and pieces of it, and making assumptions without actually knowing the whole picture.

I didn’t say in any way, nor did I even imply in any way, that the 2 completely separate exploits have anything to do with each other in any way at all.
The point was that it’s Sony’s responsibility to fix the tiff exploit due to the fact that most “regular” (ie non-homebrew) users, wouldn’t know better than to not brick their PSP by accident, and there where scenarios for that given.

The HTML exploit came into play, when people asked “why would someone be stupid enough to open an unknown picture on their PSP?”. To which I explained that to me it’s common sense to not open an e-mail from a stranger while having images enabled, yet to most people they wouldn’t think twice about doing it (and an explanation as to why that’s a bad idea was given). Proving the point that it’s only stupid to do something if you know better and do it anyways, but what’s obvious to one, is not automatically obvious to all. (I’m sure I do “stupid” things all the time :P)

To which you responded with some childish comment insinuating that all the things I wrote where false, while giving absolutely no substance or basis for your conclusion, thus the “2 year old” comment. If you’re going to act like one, you’re going to get called one.

Now you come back and try to debunk my posts with a post that makes absolutely no sense in relation to the overall progress of the thread, and based on your previous post directed at me, you’re obviously attempting to be sarcastic and condescending, but still not making any actual comments to negate anything that I said, in the actual context that I said it. I have no problems debating, I rather enjoy it, and I even have no problems admitting when I’ve been proven wrong (or been given a viable alternate viewpoint), but that’s just doesn’t appear to be what you’re trying to do here.

Not sure what your problem with me is, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.

As a great man once said -
Success to you, even if you wish me the opposite.

DONT UPGRADE you’ll be forever regretful

1. if you have any version below version 2.71 and is not a TA model, downgrade.
2.go onto torrentz download an a homebrew of your choice (bitcomet)
3.download DEVHOOK and install it onto your psp (as well as the WEB PORTAL your going to need this for surfing the web with aim, messenger, etc.)
4. drag and drop the iso into the iso folder (delete text “iso goes here”)
5. run devhook with a UMD in and that is it.

I feel sorry for the people upgrading since they won’t be able to enjoy….anything! except for 50 dollar games :( your choice

I’m not saying, “Oh man ***** the PSP.” I’m saying ***** Sony. And yes, quite a large difference. I think the PSP is awesome, when I get free *****. Sony is just making themselves look idiotic, who do they think they’re fooling? Everyone knows damn well these updates are here to stop exploits and right now that is it. “Omg larger GB sticks!” Wow, sweet. If you can’t use homebrew, do you really need 8 gigs of space? Sony is just pissed because they messed up and now they’re trying to quickly cover their screw-ups with patches, if they wouldn’t of done ***** like this in the first place, they wouldn’t have to worry about piracy. We bought our PSP’s, we’ll do what we damn well please with them. I forget who said something along the lines of their car can go 120MPH, they’re not allowed to drive that fast but their car can do it anyway, which is exactly how the PSP is, if the system is capable of such things, then it’s fair game.

Please can someone explain to me why anyone would really buy a PS3 when/IF it comes out? Let’s see, the games will be 10 pounds more (FOR THE SAME GRAPHICS), there is no rumble in the controllers, Blu Ray has the worst compression (MPEG2), most of the release games have already been out for a year. What type of person would seriously consider buying a PS3 when the XBOX 360 does it just as well if not better and at a MUCH MUCH cheaper price. The PlayStation/Sony era is coming to an end so I think it’s time everyone moves on.

Listen guys, let’s come together on this stuff. We’re all interested in the homebrewn scene on PSP. There’s no reason to fight about any of this.

1. Sony releases updates for their PSP b/c they wish to make profit. They do *NOT* make profit from homebrewn or PSP crashes. If anything, we’re testing every release for them to patch when [IF] another exploit is found.

2. The PSP is an amazing handheld and it’ll only get better in the future. We didn’t even have fast gameboy emulation till one month ago. Daedalus for N64 is still coming along also. My point is to be cool to others on these comments and try to understand we’re all working towards the same goal…ONE PIMPED OUT PSP!

Comment by Jin
2006-09-09 01:27:03

I find it pathetic that there was actually this many holes to begin with. Thumbs up to Sony for knowing their own system.
To 135, I realize Sony doesn’t make money off of homebrew. Nothing we can do about that, the more they try, the more the hackers try, and it’s sad how they have their asses handed to them on a silver platter with all the tremmings at least once a month with some huge break through that they didn’t know about. So yes in a way the hackers are showing all the exploits, but we need those in order to run homebrew. I understand Sony has to fight this, but I’d honestly just give up. That’s been said before, but this cat and mouse chase with the hackers and Sony is a laughing stock the way a few people show up a whole corperation of coders and designers. I mean they used the UMD to “help prevent a wave of piracy,” was that their only precaution? ‘Cause that was tore apart the first week the PSP was out. They couldn’t of had full faith in the UMD alone, and now they make themselves look foolish by trying to play catch-up with the hackers everytime they discover another flaw. But ahhh it’s all been said before, so ah well. I guess instead of people bitching about how they want eLoaders and Downgraders for 2.80’s, Sony should actually come out with something, anything that’s actually half decent that they can call an update and not just “Oh this prevents malicious code,” as in Free games. And yes, you all know it, hah.

Wow when will sony just give up! We have utilies made to speed up the hacking process, we are always working to find new exploits and all Sony is focued on is to “secure the PSP”.
WELL SONY STFU! DO WHAT YOU DO BEST AND GET GAME COMPANIES TO RELEASE BETTER GAMES or THE COMPANIES RELEASING GOOD GAMES, KEEP THEM AT IT. IF YOU HAVE BOTH GOOD GAMES RELEASED AND A PROTABLE SYSTEM NOT JUST CAPABLE OF 1st PARTY GAMES and MULTIMEDIA but 3rd PARTY CONSUMER INPUT, THEN YOU GET MORE PEOPLE SUPPORTING YOU.
ALL SONY IS DOING IS WASTING MONEY, TO PAY THEIR TIME TO BLOCK OUR METHODS OF RUNNING 3RD PARTY CODE, WHEN EVENTUALLY THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY TO DO SO.
One more thing Sony – IF MICROSOFT RELEASES A PORTABLE SYSTEM AND ALLOWS 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE, PSP MIGHT DIE! IF YOUR HOMEBOYS ARE ON THESE FORUMS READING THIS, JUST REMEMBER THERE IS A COMPETITION THAT CAN SEE WHAT CONSTUMERS WANT AND EVENTUALLY BEAT YOU! DONT LET THAT HAPPEN!

AMEN!

I Must Admit Sony sure knows how to manipulate our lust for a Technical enviroment. Its a shame that they have to withhold technical advances in order to cover there own finnacial losses. Im sure the PSP can fly and sony knows it! The fact that they don’t is Sony’s way of controlling the consumer market of digital electronics. The PSP is nice little Piece of work and I’m hopefull its not scrapped because of Hackers trying to belittle its full potential that sony has allready allocated in the near future. As a techy I cant wait to see the better firmware from sony for the PSP but a consumer I’m somewhat pissed that I have to wait until Sony can afford to release it.Give Sony Credit they didn’t just build a PSP they Created it.

Well,

OOPS! I got my psp from a friend for helping him load his truck so he could move to Texas. The first night I was messing around with it. I found the area to input info for my wireless network to get on the net. The firmware upgrade popped up. I didn’t think much of it since I had not been in this scene, so I upgraded. The next day I started wondering if you could play old NES or SNES games on it and started searching, and………. like I said……oops! Damnit I wanted to be able to play Super Mario world on the plane along with other games that came along with it from my friend. Also my 4 year son would love to play Super Mario on it. I don’t hate sony for the upgrade but I do hate the fact that I have to wait for another hack in order to play the good old oldies. They did what they had to do and now the hackers will do the same (I hope). I will wait till then and then get to playing the oldies. Along with buying the UMDs if I like them.

let me know.

King Joe, your mom is a whore and i f*ked her last night.
really hard against the wall cos she had a tight little p*ssy.
and i also shoved a rod up her ass which she thought was very nice!
