And the weekend finale…. drum-roll please… GTA-less “Hello World” on firmware 2.0, 2.01, 2.50, 2.60, 2.70, 2.71, and… 2.80! Yes, you read correctly - all 2.XX firmware! What does this mean? Well, I’ll just quote you the entire readme:
Finally, it’s here! As of today, the world of homebrew is no longer restricted to owners of Grand Theft Auto.
Following the publication of a new proof of concept TIFF vulnerability by NOPx86, a team of PSP developers has been working hard to turn it into an opening for homebrew on the PSP. We’re pleased to announce that the wait is over, with the release of a Hello World demo that runs on all PSP firmwares that are capable of viewing TIFF images!
To install, just unpack this ZIP file to your PSP’s PHOTO folder, and then attempt to view hello_world.tif. Hello World will launch automatically. You may find that occasionally the full screen doesn’t show - this is a known problem, just restart your PSP by holding the power button until it turns off, then open the image again. To quit, hold the power button until the PSP turns off.
So what happens next? This shows that we can run code via this exploit. It won’t be too hard to develop an eLoader that can use this exploit on v2.0 - v2.6. v2.7+ will be harder, due to extra security, but will happen a little later. Kernel mode is unavailable on v2.8, but it is likely that a downgrader is possible on all other firmwares. But then, with the possibility of kernel homebrew running without the need for a game UMD, why would you need to downgrade?

I literally just finished downgrading my friend’s 2.00 to 1.5 when I saw this news posting.

ive got 2.8, and when i try to get to the icon, it freezes for a bit and then shuts off. Is this supposed to happen?

It seems that what ever Sony throws at PSP crackers has will be cracked.

WOW congrats to everyone, i’ve been a long time owner of two psp’s both 1.5’s and been going to 2.0 and back over and over im going to 2.7 web browser without DEVhook, wow congrats all you that’ve been waiting and now there is gonna be a lot of developing going on. I love Sony, but what I wouldn’t give but to hear, if anything, the ruckus that’s going on in the firmware development department…
I kinda hoped this would have been announced after v3.0 was released, since it is most likely that Sony will patch it. Either way, expect v2.81 to be released before then.

Wait, I take that back. Obviously, not all apps that were 1.5 only will be usable for the other firmwares(ie. custom firmwares, X-Flash, etc)

I echo what was said above about this being released a little too early - it’s obviously now very very unlikely that a similar exploit will work come 3.0 (or even 2.81/2.9), and if Sony had no idea about the security issue, it would have been a bigger hit against them. I’m not saying, however, that this particular work is designed to be something as coarse as a “Fuck Sony”, but they may as well have maximised their gains over two whole firmware releases (1.0 - 3.0, even if 1.0 had a great deal of freedom). It would have been lovely to play “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories” one moment, and an emulator the next (on the day, or in the week, of its release)…
That said, this is obviously great, great work, and my thanks goes out to them. It’s going to be an interesting few weeks to see if exisiting 1.5 homebrew will run through the exploit, although, even with little technical knowledge, I doubt it will. I guess the dream to get universally compatible homebrew applications is a little further off (perhaps an impossible distance) than homebrew for all. I assume we will have to pick each of our homebrew versions, and I have no problem with that. Delighted .

good news. but why do u geeks always talk about sony, when u own a sony product. thats pretty dumb, u should at least be glade they even made the psp. this is kinda of bad news, cuz now the game developers aint going to make games as good, now cuz every body will be downloading them for free off the net. who knows, thanks alot, u just killed the psp game indistry. smart move dumb ass’s.

I gotten out of bed & turned pc on as im ill,& i come on here to read up [as i do each n every day] & wow im feeling better already,[im already an owner of 2 psps white n black] but my sons gotta 2.70 he upgraded his psp to now i can downgrade it today so he dont have to use myne all the time to play me on certain games lol [you know kids sitcky fingers n all] so again great news not just for me n my son but to all the others out there who couldnt downgrade,[YOULL LOVE IT, 1.5OFW THAT IS] wasnt expecting for at least 1 month or so so a really well done to ya.
Could have waiten for fw3.00 tho as then all wouldve been available to us but no great big deal,Youve done it on all other firmwares so you know this ones gonna get done sooner or later.

You’re kidding right? if anything is going to be running on 3.0 it is VCS.
As for them not releasing until 3.0 is released, that would be a pointless excercise as 3.0 is pretty much a complete re-write of the firmware, see fanjitas website:

This news seems very exciting as I almost had a fit when I come across this webiste and saw all the cool stuff that the psp can do (i upgraded to 2.8 UNKNOWINGLY)

this is kinda funny. i left the psp-hacks.com webpage up and went to sleep. when i woke up, i was like maybe if i hit the refresh button something about the psp tiff exploit will have something new. AND IT DID! i thought i was still sleeping and this was all a dream. but its not! :) GOOD WORK ALL OF YOU!

Or so I would say if I was stupid like the rest of the noobs. I’m new to this too, but I understand that this is a great step forward. I got my PSP a few months ago and it had firmware 2.5 on it. I updated that to 2.6 and didn’t update since, hoping that I could get homebrew working once I can afford GTA. I got that last Saturday and of course it was patched, I didn’t have much hope but then again it’s no big loss, I’d have bought GTA anyways.
This new exploit gives me hope, so kudos to the hacking team and keep up the good work!

This will probably make sony bring out there FWv3.0 early, they were keeping this one back to be released at the same time as the PS3, it supposedly has the long awaited PSone emulator which in itself will tempt ppl to upgrade, I will be one of them as I am lucky enough to own 2 PSP’s, anyway well done on this discovery, this means also that ppl on ebay wont be making a fortune selling overpriced 1.5’s because they will nolonger be a rarity.

now all they need to do is implement the eloader into the tiff hack and then bam total homebrew
To stop it from autorunning do what was done in the Tetris libtiff exploit on 2.0, http://noobz.eu/.
Simply put it in a folder with the hello world file and another image file which was modified before the hello world file.
To open just open up the folder the hello world file is included in.
