PSP WiFi PC Controller

greg | August 5, 2006

Update: Interesting discovery by Chuck (in the comments)… With the PSP WiFi Controller + Winstick (available here) it is now possible to control Winamp, the mouse, and Windows Media Player on the PC hosting the server – directly from your PSP!

What an ingenious idea – using your PSP as a WiFi controller/joystick on your Windows PC!

Quoted from the readme:

This basically turns your PSP into a controller for your PC (running Windows). How it works is that PPJoy provides a way to create a virtual joystick. We can then communicate with this virtual joystick as though it were a real joystick. This is accomplished by running a server in Microsoft Windows. The server just runs in the background waiting for a connection. When you start the WiFiController program on your Sony PSP it will establish a network connection over wireless using infrastructure mode. Once it establishes a connection and obtains an IP address it will connect to the server running on your PC. Once it has connected to your PC it will act just like a regular joystick.

You’ll be required to download PPJoy separately, here

Otherwise the zip archive contains the PSP EBOOTs, Windows server application, and all the source code. And of course the readme.txt covers installation and usage, as well as some more background information on the project. Great work David Rudie!

this dosnt make any sence seeing the psp is not the best controller. Its a great app and congrats to the maker. But i find it usless seeing i bought a ps2 like controller for the computer with rubble feature dual analoge sticks. Both of which the psp cant do.

So great app just no use.

What’s the point of making the PSP a USB enabled controller? There’s plenty of cheap USB controllers around. Now a decent wireless controller, those are not cheap. Either use this or go out and buy a USB controller.

Why not make it a USB controller and also a Wireless Controller? 2 is always better than 1.

This is a long and annoying process, i forget wut u have to do to get the SocketTest.exe to work if u do it wrong…..

for all ppl out there, no this does not work on all firmwares, only on 1.50 and 1.00, if u have neither, stop reading, buy the Modchip, then return.

@ferg:
I haven’t found a way for that on the internet yet, but, a pretty good site to check out for some stuff for that wuld be http://www.i-hacked.com

Has anyone found a way to use this to control the mouse or/and winamp of the PC hosting server?

It would be pretty nice to be able to control the volume of my winamp and change song directly with my PSP!

It would transform my PSP into really cool remote control for my laptop!

LOL… I’ve just google it and found out there’s already a cool winamp pluging for that, you can download it from :

http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=142181

You can now control you winamp and mouse with your PSP!

Enjoy!

In my PSP Root, there is no “wifi.cfg”. I created one, but am unsure of what to type in there, as when I tried “#addressxx.xx.x.x” (those “x”s being my IP address), it didnt work. So what do I type in the wifi.cfg in the root…?

For those having problems with the app, try having a look at the Windows Firewall settings. Mine was connecting, Windows was detecting the controller, but in the calibration panel, nothing was happening until I disabled my firewall.

As for the “wifi.cfg”, I’ve modified it at 2 different places for the address:

On PSP:
\PSP\GAME\__SCE__wificontroller

On PC:
…\WiFiController\src

Polsky:
You need both!

Comment by dipswitch
2006-08-06 11:32:41

I only had to add IP address to the wifi.cfg on the mem stick. If I’m not mistaken the ..\WiFiController\src folder is the source code for this program and is not needed unless you wanted to compile the code for your own development.

Thanks for the winamp plugin find Chuck. Works great and was something I was looking for too.

2006-08-06 13:10:56

Well, if your run “ipconfig” in command prompt and the IP address of your pc is let say : 192.168.1.4

Your wifi.cfg on your memory card should look like that:

# set the address of the server…
# note: make sure there are no spaces before…
address=192.168.1.4

Don’t put a # in front of your address, else I guess it will pick it up as a comment… plus try address with 2 d’s. Again, it started to work for me when I disabled Windows firewall… If it’s still not working, read again the readme file, you did something wrong !

On the last version i had a rather upsetting accurence. everything with the program that runs on psp it self worked fine, and the server on the computer aswell. BUT, “PPjoy” caused my psp to lose its USB 2.0 functionality some how (and possibly more, i didnt waste time to find out) i ended up just system recovering to right before taht installation. everything wnet back to normal ONLY after removing “ppjoy” and all of it contents. so im a bit hesitant to test this one aswell. im sure the “psp wifi controller” works fine. just not sure about “ppjoy”. anyone else have any problems with it in some way like i did?

why the hell are all you people saying not to make it for USB. How does it affect you? If it were only for USB and you new it had the capability to be on Wifi youd be requesting it. And why the hell would I buy some controler for my computer, when I paid 250 bucks for my psp. I wanna get the most out of this thing. Saying we should buy the controller is like saying we should buy the psp games. How stupid can you guys be. This is psp-hacks. Why not get it free. Im sorry that I have dial-up and no wirless network in my house. And why set one up just for this? This app should be easy to include USB so why not add it. Damn!

Comment by DanThaMan1275
2006-08-07 08:20:47

lol, noobs. WiFi is great, but adding USB connectivity would expand the usability of the hack, not to mention the problems some noobs have configuring their wireless. Also, it would be more battery efficient – using WiFi on the PSP takes quite a bit out of it.

By the way, I followed everything the readme said, and it all seems to work, but for some reason when I go to calibrate it, none of the buttons work. I did everything EXACTLY as it said. Help please, anyone?

Works great but it could be even better if you didn’t have to connect your psp to your computer to alter the IP address. Having to connect the psp every time my network ip changes kinda defeats the purpose of it being a wireless controller. Otherwise, im quite happy with it.

This worked great! Played some games with it, it’s a pity the PSP “Select” button placement sucks.

Chuck, thanks a LOT for the tip re: WinStick, it worked wonders! Now I can — as you — control my laptop remotely. Great for presentations and watching movies, playing music…. It’s a pity it takes so much battery power.

I’d love to see a version that does NOT update every 1/60th of a sec, since I don’t need the analog input. Might not require as much battery power…
