PSPMaster: Sega Master System/Game Gear Emulator

Posted by greg

Remember these classic Sega innovations - the Master System console and the Game Gear handheld? Well if ya don’t, here’s a little blast from the past: the cartridge-based Master System, predecessor to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, was released in 1985 in Japan (1986 for the US) during the 8-bit gaming era. In 1990 Sega released the Game Gear in response to Nintendo’s Gameboy. Yadda, yadda, yadda…

Now onto this newly released emulator from [Bo]Trops, PSPMaster - emulating both the Sega Master System and Game Gear! I just gave this a quick test-run and it runs quite well.

The emulator uses the old Marat Z80 emulator by Marat Fayzullin, some parts of SMS Plus by Charles Mac Donald, and is heavylly optimized for the PSP system. PSPMaster is running at full speed without frame skiping when the YM2413 sound emulation is disabled. Please do not change default options if you don’t know what you are doing.

SEGA Master System

v0.0.2b changelog:

  • Game Gear emulation is ok.
  • Some speed optimizations.
  • The analog button can be used as the SMS DButton.
  • Fixed a sound bug.
  • Options menu.
  • Screen shots in gif format.
  • Language file suport.
  • Suport for YM2413 sound chip, but emulation became slow when enabled.

Dunno, it was before my time. Can never go wrong with a Sonic title. ;) Btw, I’m playing Sonic 2 for Game Gear.

aaa: you get the roms in a far away land. in this far away land you will find a cave. in this cave is a map stained with coffee, duck fat, and semen. this map will lead you to the roms.

who ever knows who originally said this owns.

“lol, what good games did the Sega Master System have?”

Actually, quite a few, for those of us lucky enough to live in countries where the system had a decent run. It was more powerful than the NES, but Nintendo’s stranglehold on 3rd parties was a prime cause of it suffering Stateside.

Just a few gems that spring to mind:

    Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    Basketball Nightmare
    Desert Strike
    Ecco the Dolphin
    G-Loc
Mickey Mouse - Land of Illusion
    Paperboy
    Phantasy Star
    Populous
    Prince of Persia
    RC Grand Prix
    Rastan
    Ristar
    Secret Commando
    Strider
Shining Force - Sword of Hajya (Game Gear)
Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos
    Trans-Bot
Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land

And Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon’s Trap, being my all-time favorite.
