“Dual-boot” Custom Firmware

greg | July 17, 2006

Update: harleyg has released a new version of his custom firmware patch. You’ll immediately notice ‘L’ trigger no longer boots DevHook – this has been replaced with the WLAN switch. In the off position it will automatically boot DevHook upon startup; otherwise, with WLAN on, you’ll boot 1.50 normally. More useful additions have been made – below is the v0.2 feature set:

Configuration and recovery mode

  • New style and menu/sub menus
  • Clockspeed configuration
  • USB mode
  • Update vshmain.prx and recovery.elf
  • Remove patch
  • Launch update eboot
  • Replace index.dat

Other

  • No kxploit
  • No corrupt icons
  • No intro

Controls (while booting):

  • WLAN switch down: Loads devhook
  • WLAN switch up: Loads XMB
  • HOLD on: Loads configuration and recovery mode
  • X: Launches autoboot eboot

“README.TXT” contains a lot of useful notes – for new and current users, be sure to check that out.

Download: Harleyg’s Custom Firmware Patch v0.2

Much thanks harleyg – very useful patch!

I decided to take yesterday off, fortunately there wasn’t much to report on; however, this particular release caught my attention. Harleyg has released a clever little firmware customization allowing you to easily “dual-boot” firmware versions: 1.50 and DevHook-emulated 2.xx.

Flash your 1.50 PSP with the download below. Once successfully flashed, holding the ‘L’ trigger during boot will automatically load DevHook with whatever firmware you have emulated. Otherwise your PSP will boot normally to 1.50! Cool huh?

Now, of course with flashing comes warning: DO NOT flash your PSP if you’re clueless. Any utility which writes directly to the PSP flash memory could potentially damage your PSP. You’ve been warned! Rest assure this custom firmware has been tested numerous times resulting with nothing but tears of joy.

Copy the RAR contents to your PSP’s memory stick maintaining the same directory structure. Run the customfirmware EBOOT and you’re done. As a precaution it may be wise to flash a non-custom 1.50 version, meaning if you have used Dark_AleX’s firmware or any other custom firmware, restore 1.50 to its original state and then use this.

ha-ha! McZonk (author of PSPset) was working on this same EXACT thing. Guess he was too busy taking exams… you snooze, you lose!

This is SICK… MY question is:

Do you get to choose which FW it goes to from a HARD RESET or from SLEEP MODE?

I believe it would be from a HARD RESET, but IDK.

b4silence, NO, i dont know where you read anything about downgrading, however if you upgrade to 2.60, then u can use the the 2.60 downgrader, ive used that downgrader twice on my friends and it worked both times flawlessly

but anyways when i read was this thing did i thot it wuld be cool but its kinda pointless i think, cuz devhook only takes like 10 seconds to boot anways

Hey, I’m not doin it yt I’m waiting for epsilon bios, I also try to avoid flashing my psp (last time I flashed was when I downgraded my 2.0 to 1.50 that was about the 5 months ago. I caught on quick cuz that was my first action as a hacker. I downgraded the day I got it. So don’t underestimate n00bs :-). I downgraded 2 psps that day good times…So I’m waiting it out until epsilon bios come out.

This seems to work on modified firmware. I’d changed a lot with xflash 11 (fonts, custom startup, backgrounds, disabled network update, etc) before running this mod, and it worked fine.

Very, very good. I used with perfect results, very useful! Very easy to recover also, on start up, just hold “R” (which starts recovery/options menu) instead of “L” (which starts DevHook). Also, the fact that you dont have to go through the DevHook launcher is very nice, just straight to 2.xx firmware.

I’ve done it, I’m backing up RaVeN and confirming that it does work with modified 1.5 FW.

The only downside to this, is that the way it loads the emulated firmware doesn’t look natural, it takes a few seconds longer than a natural load. So you can’t fool people into thinking you have a normal 2.xx PSP by showing it start up lol

Okay, this is a simple enough question, but even with all the info here it begs to be asked…if this is installed on a 1.5 PSP….does it provide THIS effect : allows the PSP to boot the 1.5 firmware as normal, allowing for homebrew / ISO loading where normally available on a regular 1.5 PSP AND booting of CUSTOM 2.xx firmware, which allows for games requiring 2.xx firmware to load off actual UMD’s in the drive / does 2.xx firmware have the onboard functionality of the 2.7 menu crossbar (web browser, etc)?????? IF NOT…WHAT is the functionality of the “custom” 2.xx firmware??

Lupin, all this does is let you load Devhook with your last used settings upon bootup instead of having to load it through the 1.5 game menu, so in effect will boot whatever firmware you set Devhook to reboot to.

Ok i tried this today and it al went fine. But after a while, i realized I didn’t need this. So i went to the recovery mode and went to remove custom firmware. However, all of my saved games aren’t loading off my memory stick anymore. They all say the data is corrupt or when i create a new save and try to save it, my psp crashes and turns off. My memory stick is fine since it still picks up all my homebrew, music, and videos. Does anyone know if this happened because i tried this custom firmware? Please help!

When booting up straight into 2.71 USBHOSTS doesn’t work, if the last I played was through the USB it will just crash when it gets to the white PSP loading movie, it freezes just before it launches the game. And if I have played an ISO directly from the MS then it doesn’t pick up any of the ISO’s on my PC, but USBHOSTS it acknowledging that its connected to my PC, is there any way of fixing this?

saved games as in ISOs? if so, i’ve had the same problem while using Devhook, I get more free space on my memory stick mysteriously, then some of my ISOs cannot be read
the problem might be wifi because whenever i use wifi for anything, one of my ISOs gets corrupted and i have to replace it

It just auto boots the DEVHOOK program from onboard the standard PSP motherboard.

Then when i went to load my iso, the mem stick light just flashed in a random loop. no audio/video output.Tried to delete it, but it kept coming back at 0kb. Then i had to cut and paste all my sh1t to cpu then format mem stick. has any one got onto the internet with dev hook??i have 62% signal strength with normal access point and still wont work. Has this happened with any one yet:this happens alot to me-when i plug in my ac charger,my psp will shut off!!!or other times, my charger light wont come on,or it flickers here and there then shuts off.it still works fine though, kinda strange….

@JS
Yes that is what this is for.

@Bobby Digital
Try a format of the MS & reinstall DevHook.

@ Neo(the one)
No need for divx in the FW…
http://pimpware.pspstart.de/ (for network viewing)
or there’s also one (that I can’t find right now) that plays divx/xvid off of MS.
But PimpStreamer is bad ass, there’s nothing like watching anime or asian chicks w/ swords/guns anywhere I can get wifi.

Comment by dapht_punk
2006-07-18 00:27:24

@ JS again
And actually as long as your backups aren’t modified PRX’s you should be able to play them with DevHook & ditch fastloader.
But if you have modified games they may not work.

@….

I’m fine with my wifi, X5 portal works, and internet works…the only problem is IF I use wifi at all, my ISO is corrupted and I guess something gets deleted(My MS mysteriously has more freespace…)

Your problem with wifi might be because your running at 333Mhz try lowering it, thats all I can say

I didn’t like this version but I hope it will improve.
You can ONLY customize what eboot launches with x button held down. If I could customize what eboot is used for each process this would be useful.

I use irSHELL for my main boot on my emulator stick and devhook for my iso stick with the proof of concept and untill this program allows ‘customizing what boots up’ it doesn’t even live up to it’s own name.

It does however show off some very impresive features with the recovery console! This is obviously where all the work went into. Plz allow for futher customizing with use of the setup.cfg.

Im sure the inexpierenced will love this though.
It’s the best for my friend’s cuz he has no need for anything other than true 1.5 and 2.6 w/o isos.

I will NEVER sacrifice having irShell boot up on it’s own instead of this.

Irshell boots up, if i want 1.5 I quit if I want 2.6 i press x button cuz devauto is right there. And it’s just as fast if not faster.

Oh btw if i want to change my iso boot i just go one icon down and choose devhook launcher

This is all I could need. But I love your usb enabled HOLD on method.

does anybody actually read the instructions?

Can anybody figure ANYTHING out by themselves?

or do dark alex and chaos zero have to create a gui setup file for everything on this site

even if they did people would still need to have someone else hold thier hand and drag them through everything

GROW A F@#KIN BRAIN GOD DAMMIT

** just a suggestion to PSP-HACKS **

howabout puting what FW the hack works for right in the the title bar of the article

For instance {”dual boot” custom firmware for 1.50 PSPs } instead of “duel boot” custom firmware

those 6 little characters (for 1.50) would probably prevent over half of the questions posted in the comments section

if u did that and kids still say is this fo 2.5 , 2.6 or the stupidest of all, is this for 2.71 then we should just shoot ourselves now cause the people who cant read but some how know how to type will never get it

Anyone else had any problems when trying to boot straight into 2.71? It keeps locking up as it’s loading. I read somewhere that it’s because you need to keep the clock speed at 222 (or whatever it is). Dont up it and you should have no problems loading.

I think using the WLAN switch to control whether DevHook loads on startup is a really bad idea. I prefer to keep my WLAN switch off all the time, until I actually have a need to use the WLAN function. It would be a much better idea to do this:
1. Make the regular on switch boot the PSP with all the DEFAULT settings.
2. Hold the on switch to CONFIGURE THE DEFAULT settings and proceed to boot when you exit the config screen. This way, whatever your preference for settings is (that is fw version, clock speed, etc), you can always boot up your PSP using those settings just by turning it on normally.

what i would like is two copys of devhook on my psp one for loading umd’s as normal using the wifi button and one for loading iso’s holding x down, just change your iso name to the name set up for devhook then just reset no need to change setings but it always uses the same ini setup file if anyone could change it to use a differnet file would be great and then even you could have a differnet firmware version for every buton

I download PSP Custom firmware patch v0.2 by harleyg……and I am already with PSP with custom firmware of DARK_ALEX….

Some request…please:

1 – So ….if install this over my custom is right ?

Infact i read on the file readme:
Quote:
>>For current users
Copy the vshmain.prx and recovery.elf to the root of the memorystick, then boot the PSP in configuration and recovery mode.
Go to the recovery/backup menu and flash the new recovery.elf and vshmain.prx. Reboot.

2 – If after install it i want return to previous firmware custom of Dark Alex or !.5o original firmware….WHICH pack or POC i can use ???

Thank

OK I need some help. I installed this custom firmware. Then I installed the mp3 mod so that mp3’s can play in the xmb. So when I uninstall this custom firmware it works pretty much fine but I can still play mp3’s anywhere in the xmb. How do I uninstall the mp3 mod from my firmware?

GM710 do you mean to reinstall the custom firmware? Then go to recovery mode and remove custom firmware?
