Epsilon Bios Video Released

Gary13579 | June 23, 2006

With the upcoming release of Undiluted Platinum, the first PSP modchip to be released and sold to the public, comes an interesting video of a custom BIOS (or firmware) for the PSP which allows you to run homebrew and load ISOs on any firmware; including 2.6 and up.

You can watch the video here.

You can find out if your PSP can use this modchip here, and as always you can pre-order it here.

Update: Some people have posted comments/questions about this. I will try to answer some of them.
This BIOS is a custom firmware which runs on the Undiluted Platinum. You will need to purchase and install the modchip before you can run this. If the modchip is installed you can just copy this firmware over with the included USB cable the modchip comes with and you will automatically boot into the firmware.
You can then run any homebrew or boot ISOs directly from the PSP’s XMB, as well as use the 2.71 features (web browser, flash, etc), even if you have a 1.5 PSP.

Dude, Stace, you can run firmware off memorystick. Use the dev hook sampler (but it only goes to 2.5 so far, they are working on 2.71)

So….I understand from this that it is a modified 2.71 firmware , which means if you have FW less than 2.71 you can use it the new modified one to upgrade and get all the cool features ! however I am not sure., but probably it will be real soon.

Comment by DiGiT
2006-06-24 07:56:02

@ Hasan. No even if you have FW 2.71 it does’nt matter as you can have what ever firmware to boot from on the U.P modchip.

Comment by DiGiT
2006-06-24 07:58:01

Or you could do like they’ve done and use a modified 2.71 FW for playing up to date game’s straight from your MS

Comment by Hasan
2006-06-24 08:15:58

@DiGiT
My point was to use the new firmware without U.P , I know with U.P you can load anything in the external flash memory.

SONY will patch this you all will see. I still will not upgrade past 1.5. Sony has been waiting for something like this and they have a few tricks up there sleeve. However this will be great for 2.01 and up users so they can play iso. They obviously have the psone emulator complete but do not want it hacked. Next Sony update will make the modchip mostly useless and 1.5 will still be the king!

Comment by Samp
2006-06-24 10:57:02

And another thing what is the point in using devhook with this? So you can “downgrade” to a lower firmware…..worthless. Everybody should wait devhook will have full emulation soon and I am guessing with all of the features of the epsilion bios. Patience people let the devs have fun with this. There will be tons of updates within the next three months and the modchip will be completely useless……..at least to 1.5 users.

Comment by psychokill
2006-06-24 11:18:54

the mod chip wont be useless as you dont need to run the installer to use the hacked firmwares so you can install them bypassing the psp then this is 2.71 so all games will load directly from the game menu and all the people on 1.5 will still be stuck waiting for loaders and hacks to come out so the games run on 1.5. trust me if this is true it will be a hell of alot easyer to run iso’s than 1.5 will ever be and sony cant patch it out that easy as the person can just change the newest versaion in a similar way.

im saying wait, but I just thougt about how you can have as many firmwares as you want as logn as you have space on your mem stick. You can launch the modchip 1.5, PSP 2.71+, and launch other version for whatever reason you mihgt have using devhook =P thatd be cool

The point of the modchip is so that 2.01+ users can have nearly the same/better hombrew capabilities as 1.5 users. If you’re 1.5, don’t get the modchip and stop posting, as you ahve 1.5 and don’t care.

“this means we have cracked the new encryption methods”, wouldn´t that mean that they can just name the firmware 2.80 and encrypt it so that it can be installed without UP? or encrypt the homebrews?

you guys must not have dowloaded ANY RUN UMD isos’s huh? Before Devhook and even Daxiso 0.62 the RUNUMD isos cam in a 3 folder setup with a X folder and a PSP_GAME folder going in the root of the memory stick. You also got a patched RUNUMD eboot to place in the PSP/GAME folder….so when you loaded up your psp…you see a game-specific icon in place of the RUNUMD icon…its essentially a runumd icon patched to show the game icon and sound

chuch

If u have 1.50 u may get the modchip too, because u dont need patch isos anymore. No more glitches…
Everyone can remember of the case of Field Comander, Street fighter and etc…
With modchip installed, NO PATCHES NEEDED!!!! Only put your iso on MS and play!!!
I have a 1.5 PSP, with a board compatible, and im going get the chip, but ill wait a couple of months to be sure of any bugs or any problems with the chip.
Everyone can remember of the firsts mod chips for PS2 with wrong voltage and so…
But im very impressed and excited with it.

nice i will definately buy one of the premodded ones from modchipstore.com, i will buy the white one which is $500 but who cares its for me and besides i always wanted a white psp, then i will learn how to install this bios, then i will buy the 4 gig sandisk card so i could load it up with all the shit i have downloaded over the months, music, videos, pics, homebrew, emulators, and then a nice portable harddrive to carry all my crap in, mostly vids so that i could switch crap with ma psp whenever i want, then a good battery for my white psp too, some good shure earphones too, and a logitech hard case, and then i think i will buy about three or four psp games that make you update, i will get all this so who cares if it will cost me $800 or $900 it will be better than getting a ps3 or wii, but then again i will get a wii and maybe just buy two 1.5 psps from a guy i know that sells them, i already own two 1.5 psps but i wanted a premodded white one pimped out with accesories, so maybe i should buy two more to save money and buy a wii with them instead, i think i will wait for ps3 to go down, well i am done ranting bye i got to go save money yay, peace

Well, I’ll wait for this modchip that’s coming out. It really does seem possible that Sony will release new firmware updates that will detect the U.P and won’t allow it to play.

However there is a chance of the U.P community to release customized versions of future firmwares that wont detect the U.P and will allow itself to install. The customized firmware can also have code that can boot games that require future updates that block U.P on custom firmware 2.71!

From my understanding, Sony can’t do anything about this. You can’t block out Hardware with Software, unless that hardware directly corresponds with the said software. The only chance they could do so is in the situation in which the UP requires the use of Sony’s original motherboard, and even then it’s unlikely.

Will like so many psp user have been saying this mod chip is for 2.01+ users. Not really for 1.5 users, honestly i can save $200 just by sticking 2 the 1.5 firmware, unless you can solder ($100 less). Plus like a previous writer said they can have glitchs in the chip, or worse $ony can find a way 2 fuckkk users with this mod chip up the ass. Or even worse make this a all out assult on hacking, and try 2 make future firmwares unhackable for 1.5 users, and probable evenually the mod chip users we be fucked 2 (Probably by making the umd’s, or games unhackable.) So please buy one and spend $200 on a mod chip if you are a 2.01+ user, but if you are a 1.5 user dont waste the money, until you have given $ony a chance to fuck it over. So please 1.5 users stay 1.5 this chip can have sever implications that are not for seen. Yes the movie look nice, but what they dont show you for all you DO IF YOURSELFERS is a dumb ass fucking up his psp because he soldered it wrong. LOL. I LIKE 2 SEE THIS ROFL.

I dont see how Sony can block this chip.
For sony to do anything it would require something from Sony to get on to the PSP.
Assuming that any new firware features will eventually be decoded and encoporated into custom firmwares (for both devHook and UP)
you wont be needing to upgrade your firmware offcially ever.
At the end of the day I cant see the orgianl bios chip doing anything this modchip cant….

probbably Sony will add more security to the new firmwares so they can’t be hacked again:(

Depends what you mean.
If you mean the ablilty to run isos, sorry I mean homebrew, they’ve pretty much mangaged to lock that up since 1.5.
If you mean being able to decode and understand what and how the new firmware works, something needed to create an upto date custom firmware, then I think they will always do whatever they can to make them secure, and this will be something any mod will have to face, chipped or not.
In the end it will be a choice between is it easier to make custom firmwares or emulated firmwares.
THe ony difference is that UP will be available to a wider number of PSP’s
