Epsilon BiOS Custom Flash Replacement For PSP

greg | June 3, 2006

Apparently a few folks have developed a custom flash replacement for the PSP, which will in turn allow you to enjoy all the latest firmware features from Sony, as well as run unsigned code and utilize homebrew to its full potential. Read on…

Epsilon BiOS is a custom flash “replacement” for the $ony PSP which unleashes the full potential of your handheld, allowing you to both use homebrew software and run UMD iSO games from your Memory Stick on the latest Firmware releases while also enjoying the impressive features built into the operating system such as RSS feeds, WMA support etc. Currently the 2.71 Firmware release is supported – that’s right, this means we have cracked the new encryption methods and developed the operating system hacks necessary to allow unsigned code to run, even in kernel mode.

We have been developing Epsilon BiOS for quite some time, but due to the fact that it requires a dual-flash system (one flash is used to bootstrap our code, the other stores the normal PSP Firmware) we have been unable to release it – until now, with the appearance of the Undiluted Platinum mod-chip. Previously we had been using our own custom hardware for development, however about a week ago we received Undiuluted Platinum prototypes and have since modified our code to work with their hardware – its working great, despite a few bugs which we need to iron out before the release. For those who are wondering, yes, you will need an Undiluted Platinum installed in your PSP to take advantage of this.

As mentioned above, using Epsilon BiOS its possible to launch homebrew software from the memory stick, kernel mode access is also available for software which requires this. Both 1.0 and 1.5 style EBOOTs are supported. UMD iSO loading is almost transparent, simply copy your iSO files into a directory on your Memory Stick and they will appear under “Game -> Memory Stick” in the operating system menu alongside your homebrew applications. Simply launch them from here, no need to use a seperate iSO loader application. Furthermore, since the games are actually running on 2.x Firmware you dont need to worry about strange loading methods or patching the iSO files – they will simply work, in their original state. We have also developed our own compressed iSO format and will be distributing a packing tool.

This is to be treated as pure speculation at the moment – stay tuned for more updates as they become available!

Anything coming from PS2NFO is NOT to be trusted. They have proved to be scamers several times in the past. So don’t get any hopes about this…

I higly doubt the odds of this being real

I made my own custom fw that added componets to 1.5
Browser/Media coditics

But I found it almost impossabe to add the needed PRX files
to higher fw’s

The main resion this is bs is their clam of having 2.71 fetures.
We still havent even decripted the 2.71 fw, nor do we have a dump of 2.7x

Deducting that this must be a fraud

Do not trust ps2nfo! They are known for talking shit to attract attention to their adverts (they call it a website).

A:+”flash “REPLACEMENT””

@nrs.4&7: Ps2nfo not to be thrusted? Pff the only ‘BIG’ thing that was total crap on ps2nfo was a RUMOR about that famous vaporware X360 modchip, so dont talk shit pls.. They ALWAYS mention if its about a RUMOR or SPECULATION!! But apparently m0r0ns like you arent even reading the news properly!

@nr.6: So? Ohw oh wait I forgot u are the best hacker in the world to be claiming this isnt possible..right? The ‘WE’ you are talking about, whassup with that anyway? Like you know all the people or teams that are attempting to hack the psp and now exactly about the progress they have made. Get real.. Some ppl still know to keep their mouths shut when they discover or achieved something ‘BIG’ like this.. For exp. to be truly remembered for being the first team and the most professional!

@all n00bs
Anything in the console scene thats hasnt come out yet COULD be ‘fake’ or ‘impossible’. So dont come with that crap..

I will be lmao if this news is indeed true.. And playing (all) 2.xx iso’s with wifi support while you non believers are still stuck in the 1.50 age! Hoping for a miracle of wifi support 4 newer games. Scared to open up your psp’s but willing to possibly brick your psp for a software hack.. Muahahahahaahahaha

@nr.6: Btw have you even read the news..? It states they created ‘custom hardware’ that was needed to create/run their firmware! In otherwords without a possible (mass produced) modchip its useless and isnt worthy for release!! They probably even needed the ‘custom hardware’ to also dump the 2.7x firmware!!

I suppose you were talking about your softmodding attempt and not succeeding like you hoped.. 2 completely different things here m8!

@nr.13: The only reason why there wasnt a modchip a few months after the psp was software-hacked was because there was NO DEMAND for it! The 1.5 software-hack cracked (allmost) the whole system!! Think from a business perspective..it wasnt profitable on the moment! Now that the scene is stuck in evolving with the present 2.60 and up firmwares, insane amounts of gamefixes needed, no wifi support for newer games.. the time is right for a MODCHIP to help the scene evolve!!

sounds interesting, but pretty much, all they are sayign is that they made a custom firmware that can be loaded onto the modchip and run. So its not liek theres use to fake this, they are just saying they made a firmware for the modchip to run. usually i woudl be skeptical over things like this, but their story is believable

would be neat if this turns out to be real. From the post there seem to be real great features specially not needing an iso loader. :)

cool, but me thinks this should wait till the canera and gps are out. The camara and gps functions come both with new firmware. Sony may most likely figure out a way to block this new flash replacement from using the camara and gps. And the camara is one of my favs on my list. I could even imagin the hacking possibilities, like video confrenceing through IM. Also, being a digital camara will show the picture beautifully through the camara.

I’d have to say this is a bit bullshit…. ‘if’ they could actually get this working (not likely) then what would be the point of having a modchip? Also if it would take awhile to create this (which it would) why is this the first were hearing about this???? id have to agree with #11 and #13 when thay say FAKE!

Isnt it possible to just load this onto your firmware??

I dont care about Dual Boot aslong as i have the ability to go back to normal firmware without problems.

I’D PAY THEM THE PRICE OF THE MODCHIP TO BE ABLE TO DO IT!

i dont wanna mess with buying the modchip, installing it and risk fucking my psp

I already saw “tweaked” firmwares coming, but I was hoping for them to be flashable on a normal 1.5 PSP

I stil prefer Dax, it already works well and takes less space on the mem stick and it doesnt cost $90.

# 20, it’s a FUCKING ATTACTCHMENT AT THAT USES THE USB PORT ON THE PSP. IT REQUIRES A NEW FIRMWARE, AS WELL AS THE GPS FUNCTION, AN EXTERNAL DEVICE THAT USES THE USB PORT ON THE PSP. http://www.gadgetmadness.com/archives/psp_camera.JPG

Dear god, shut up. If you don’t have any experience in the related field (ie: hardmodding coupled with softmodding), then your opinion is rendered null and void.

Let me repeat this for those of you without any tact: Shut up.

we NEED a way to flash this on a normal 1.5 (or 2.0).

you can already write to the flash, why cant you put this firmware?

Maybe the risk of getting bricked…
but with the modchip out, i think this hybrid firmware developer should be able to test and make it safe to burn in a 1.5
(for people without the modchip)
