PSP Modchip! No Longer a Rumour?

Posted by greg

I’m sure you’ve all heard of a possible PSP Modchip in the works, we at PSP Hacks refrained from posting this alleged rumour until there was some positive confirmation on the chip. Well, now it appears there is, and the PSP modchip speculation appears to be legit. This is quoted from the folks over at qj.

The U.P. (Undiluted Platinum) is a flash replacement system for the PSP™ which allows the use of previous flash updates or custom firmware builds, opening up the possibility to run unsigned homebrew code on even the latest PSP systems. The U.P. contains 32MB NAND flash which is programmable from the PC via a high speed USB connection, using our user friendly software. You may boot the PSP from either its onboard flash or the flash contained on the U.P; the flash which is used is determined by a button press as the PSP is powered on (U.P. flash is used by default, hold L1 to use the PSP onboard flash). Since U.P. provides a secondary flash which the PSP can boot from, it can even be used to restore a PSP which has been “bricked”. Every effort has been made to make our flash updater software, which will be freely available for download, both as easy to use and reliable as possible. The software also contains diagnostics which can be used by installers to determine if an installation has been successful or not.

The U.P. has been designed to minimize installation difficulty and effort. A FPC (flexible printed circuit) cable is included which routes the essential signals from the PSP motherboard to the U.P. main board and U.P. USB connector. Copper enamel wire is included, which will provide the connection between the FPC cable and the motherboard signal traces. The FPC cable also helps by reducing the mechanical stress placed on the solder points, making a U.P. modified PSP shock resistant which is important for handheld systems. Installation aids are included, and installation diagrams for all PSP hardware revisions will be available for download, together with flasher software application, from our reseller’s websites. More about installation together with install pictures closer to release.

The FPC cable end to which the USB connector board attaches is routed into the battery compartment and sits above the battery. The battery cover can be replaced after flash updating and the cable remains safely in the compartment until the next update is required, whereupon the USB connector can be clipped in place within a few seconds. This means that the U.P. is completely contained within the PSP under normal usage and avoids any unsightly external modifications to your PSP. PSP is after all portable, let’s keep it that way!

In order to maximise the benefits that U.P. can provide its users, we have decided to take an open source approach with U.P and will be releasing source code for any software we release as well as full documentation for the U.P. hardware interface - including information on how to control U.P. from within PSP programs. This will allow anybody to create software which can take advantage of what U.P. has to offer. We have also sent a few prototype units away to some of the scene’s best software hackers in order to give them a headstart at working on custom flash replacements - cant wait to see what people will come up with!

Features Announced:

  • Ultra reliable and feature rich Actel ProASIC Plus FPGA
  • Full Speed USB 1.1 ASIC onboard
  • Branded 32MB NAND flash onboard (same flash as used in PSP)
  • Stable and reliable flashing software freely available for download
  • Installation verification using flashing software
  • Ultra compact four layer PCB
  • High quality Japanese connectors

  • Copper enamel wire included
  • Open platform development system for software developers
  • Installation has been optimized to fit entirely inside PSP

  • User updatable flash
  • Low power consumption
  • Flash select via button press
  • Ultra compact PCB has been designed to avoid signal bounce

Bundled Stuff:

  • U.P. MAIN MODULE x1
  • U.P. USB BOARD x1
  • USB CABLE x1
  • INSTALLATION AIDS 1 SET
  • COPPER ENAMEL WIRE 1 SPOOL
  • FPC CABLE x1

It will be priced at ~ $90 (75 Euros)

Does this mean that coders can now use the 32mb instead of the 4mb onboard so maybe a much needed GBA and N64 fully working emulator?

    unlucky #2, not first

This is a worthy buy, but it needs to be guarenteed to be very easy to install to those who dont understand circuitry. the ability to revive a bricked psp has got to be the most important feature!

but i just have to say… many people will kill their psps in the installation process.
we went through 2 psps trying to instal the psp2tv over at GameSpot. though i’m sure this will not require soldering and only ribbon replacements… the inside of the psp is very tight and presice. trying to place a daughter card in there though possible if engineered right… wont be easy and will create complications. trust me. i can almost hear all the frustrated crying idiots that will break their psps.

to #3’s comment on v3.0 firmware security, the U.P. flash is like having a whole seperate operating system. V3.0 security wont apply as the PSP firm will be v3.0 but U.P will be, whatever it is! thats why you have to choose one as it boots up.

Hullo, glad to see this info on exactly how it works! i hope that the price could come down abit, and that installation wont be too difficult. I know that i will be getting one simply to revive a bricked psp. would be nice if this was solderless, although in the info posted it mentions some solder points.

Also i agree, many programs “should” run better with the extra memory space, lets hope hope this is the case and it gets put to good use.

ok so when you open the PSP we can include a scanner to check for any other firmware and flashes and if they are there the PSP can just restart the setting to default or just block the mod guys this is not that hard for us trust me sony is the maker of the PSP and it knows how to deal with it!

Anybody here remember old Atari 800 XL with an tape recorder unit? That thing was slow as hell (35 minutes to load one game) and there was a mod for it, called TURBO 2000. It improved it to 4-5 minutes. Than they came up with the cartridge, whitch alowed you go faster (TURBO 8000 and so on), plus it usually had a instant acces to three usefull aps, like tape copy, debuger, verif. the tape and so on. I DO believe if this was possible almost 20 years ago, our highly anticipated modchip WILL be a reality soon. Peace.

As a 1.5 owner I am excited about this modchip (U.P) and heres why: Not
only can I enjoy the features that come with 2.01 and above, but can also
enjoy the benefits of a 1.5 or even better a “custom firmware.”

For those of you who don’t understand: 2 flashes, the first flash contains
the original Sony firmware that isn’t open-source and doesn’t allow you to
downgrade from 2.01+. The second flash would be this Mod Chip (U.P) that we
are all talking about right now. This Mod Chip is an “add-on,” so your
PSP’s original flash will still be there with whatever firmware you last
updated to; if you updated at all. Ok, lets rephrase: With the Mod Chip
installed, you will still have your original Sony firmware. Your sacred PSP
will be no different except that you will have an extra flash (U.P) that you
can switch to, which can have any PSP firmware both past and present or you
can install a “custom firmware” which might allow you to run homebrew
applications, ISO’s and have the latest and greatest features that the
official Sony firmware has to offer such as the Web browser, Flash player,
Shockwave player etc. With the extra flash you no longer have to fear
bricking your PSP, so for those of you who still pray at night refusing to
believe your PSP has left you… it appears your prayers have been answered,
and with a positive answer too (Assuming you didn’t throw your PSP away)
    because you can revive it.

Now, is it worth $90.00? In my opinion, no; I will explain. Let us do some
    math here,

    Brand New PSP = $250.00
    Mod Chip (U.P) = $90.00
    Solder w/Solding Iron = $15.00
    ——–
    $355.00

If I mess up and need
to buy another PSP = $250.00
    ——-
    $605.00

Ok, so now your ready to take apart your PSP and start soldering and when
you do the unbareable happens… you screwed up because you didn’t have a
steady hand and burned the PSP’s board.
You have officially killed your precious PSP, CPR and the Heimlich are
useless; its dead. This also means you lost $250.00 and wasted the money
you spent on the Mod Chip and Soldering equipment ($105.00) because you no
longer have a PSP. In other words, you just threw away $355.00… but we
are not done yet!! You cant tell me you can live w/out the PSP, so your
probably going to go right back to the store and purchase another one! In
other words, you spend over $600.00 for a PSP, so you need to prepare your
self for the worst-case-scenario, and the money you spend will keep adding
up if you try it again and mess up.

Also, consider that the PS2 Mod Chips are not even $90.00 and some of them
    are completely solderless.

I realize that the people who made this need to make some kind of profit
but the components on this Mod Chip are probably no where near $90.00. If
the price dropped to about $30.00 then I would consider buying, but if
“they” refuse to budge then I will simply pass this offer. Remember that
this is the first Mod Chip and more will probably show up…. I said,
    “probably.”

This is great and could be very cool, but I think sony will put some kind of authentic hardware check in the new games to see if the firmware is running from a modchip or not. They did it with FFXI and the DMS3 chip. ‘Yes i know you can patch or
make updates’ but it will still be a little bit of a cat and mouse game with ISO’s. I will
wait to see what will come of all this, can’t
    wait……

lol, you kids all fail. the internet is not for you. do psp-hacks.com a favor, and kill yourselves now. this “mod chip” looks good in theory, but they keep pushing the release date every week. i think it’s bullshit, but if it is real, its a good deal, unless you’re a jittery-handed, crack fiend, fetal alcohol syndrome kid who fucks up the installation.

    thats all for now.
