File Input PSP Programming Tutorial

greg | May 31, 2006

Great news for all those PSP developers getting started in the development game - another drop from Yeldarb…

Yesterday we had a new tutorial for you Lua Programmers. Today we’ve got a new one for the C-junkies out there.

Today’s tutorial comes from forum member harleyg. It’s the first of three tutorials chronicling file-input. This first tutorial covers opening, reading, printing, and terminating an entire text file.

This has been a hot question in web forums for a long time. The lack of an adequate tutorial describing file I/O has been the elephant in the room. Well, no more. Now you can have your own applications featuring customizable settings and external information.

Check out harleyg’s first file input tutorial in our tutorials section.

New OpenTTD-PSP Development Version

greg | May 31, 2006

Jaime has released a new development build of OpenTTD-PSP.

OpenTTD is an open source clone of Microprose’s “Transport Tycoon Deluxe!” originally developed by the openttd team.

Changes:

  • Key shorcut added for network chat (select + right)
  • Code updated to v0.4.7, compatible with latest version network servers
  • Added keyboard support using PSP OSK

Some notes about the release:

To write text, cursor must be over a textbox and then press select + Left, it wont work if there is no active textbox/inputbox.

Currently keyboard support will only work on singleplayer, you can use it on multiplayer, but you will be disconnected from the game, it will be fixed on RC5. Code has been also updated to 0.4.7 to keep compatiblity with latest version pc players

There is no source code for development versions, as it takes some time to me cleaning the code, anyway you can ask me for it, and i will send it to you, if you are interested on contributing.

OpenTTD-PSP Downloads:

Wifi enabled builds:
1.00 / 2.00 package
1.50 package

non-Wifi builds:
1.00 / 2.0+ (up to 2.60) package
1.50 package

Looking forward to future improvements Jaime - keep up the great work!

PSP Anti Theft System

Alias420 | May 31, 2006

GMDude66 building on the work of some others have been hard at work helping you feel a little less hopeless when you lose your PSP. Although the security on this program looks like it could easily be cracked I’m sure most PSP thieves don’t have the smarts to figure this out ahead of time. I wish this program was out when I lost my first PSP.

PATS - a theft protection utility for the Sony PSP. PATS will now only send an email if the PSP is plugged into another computer (other than your own) by using the registry to store the value ‘Owner=True’ under a specific directory. When the PSP is connected via USB it will auto run the checking system and determine whether the registry key exists or not, if it does not the application will send you an email summary.

All files in the download were coded by GMDude66 including the new PHP mailer which includes IP resolve, browser and language detection in the email it sends out. For full installation instructions, just refer to the readme documents inside the download file.

Emulator Goodness - PSPSIM & MAME4ALL

greg | May 31, 2006

Two new emulators are available for download:

ZX-81, you’ve heard of him by now, has released an update to his SimCoupe port, PSPSIM. Included in v1.0.2 are speed optimizations - now runs full speed at 333MHz, as well as two other changes:

  • Add normal screen, zoom x1.5, x1.75 and x2 modes!
  • Change default keyboard mapping

PSPSIM successfully emulates the SAM Coupe Z80-based home computer. The SAM Coupé is an 8bit British home computer first released in 1989; it was originally manufactured by Miles Gordon Technology.

And secondly, a new version of MAME4ALL (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) has been released by kech.

This version of MAME4ALL includes better compatibility, the ‘home’ key now works, and it’s based on the latest port (mamegp32x 2.3) by chui.

A few bugs currently exist:

  • The sound is not working 100% in the majority of the games
  • ROMs largest than 10MB (zip) doesn’t load (or at least the few I’ve tryed)
  • Not all the games that work in the mamegp32x works in this version

Artificial Intelligence Tutorial 1 Released

greg | May 30, 2006

Yeldarb just dropped us another note… below is his email:

Vaza’s first Artificial Intelligence tutorial is now up in PSP-Programming.com’s tutorial section. This is the first in a series of tutorials that aims to give an introduction into adding “intelligent” enemies to your games. This tutorial is all about planning and flow charting your enemies.

The series is aimed at Lua programmers (the code is all written in Lua), but the logic can be applied to any language, so this is a great resource for all you aspiring C Programmers as well.

Expect more excellent tutorials in the series soon!

Read Vaza’s Artificial Intelligence Tutorial 1 Here

Enjoy!

PSP Homebrew Database

greg | May 30, 2006

Fanjita has been working hard over the past few weeks to deliver a universal online database of working PSP homebrew, not only for the infamous eLoader, but all homebrew compatible with various firmware versions. Quoted from noobz.eu:

The new site aims to be a completely free and public database of all PSP homebrew - not just eLoader homebrew, but v1.0, v1.5 and even v2.7 flash homebrew. The critical word here is public - the database is open to updates from any registered users, and available for browsing by anyone.

It’s intended to be a community resource, allowing you to find homebrew that interests you in all sorts of categories, as well as finding out whether a particular piece of homebrew is known to work on your PSP or not. If nobody knows, then you can try it out, and post your test results for other people to use.

This means that it’s not just a community resource, but also a community effort. It relies on people like you to keep it up-to-date, so please do register an account and take the time to enter your favourite homebrew, or your test results.

So with that said, head over to psp-homebrew.eu and sign yourself up an account - it’s free!

PSP Modchip! No Longer a Rumour?

greg | May 28, 2006

I’m sure you’ve all heard of a possible PSP Modchip in the works, we at PSP Hacks refrained from posting this alleged rumour until there was some positive confirmation on the chip. Well, now it appears there is, and the PSP modchip speculation appears to be legit. This is quoted from the folks over at qj.

The U.P. (Undiluted Platinum) is a flash replacement system for the PSP™ which allows the use of previous flash updates or custom firmware builds, opening up the possibility to run unsigned homebrew code on even the latest PSP systems. The U.P. contains 32MB NAND flash which is programmable from the PC via a high speed USB connection, using our user friendly software. You may boot the PSP from either its onboard flash or the flash contained on the U.P; the flash which is used is determined by a button press as the PSP is powered on (U.P. flash is used by default, hold L1 to use the PSP onboard flash). Since U.P. provides a secondary flash which the PSP can boot from, it can even be used to restore a PSP which has been “bricked”. Every effort has been made to make our flash updater software, which will be freely available for download, both as easy to use and reliable as possible. The software also contains diagnostics which can be used by installers to determine if an installation has been successful or not.

The U.P. has been designed to minimize installation difficulty and effort. A FPC (flexible printed circuit) cable is included which routes the essential signals from the PSP motherboard to the U.P. main board and U.P. USB connector. Copper enamel wire is included, which will provide the connection between the FPC cable and the motherboard signal traces. The FPC cable also helps by reducing the mechanical stress placed on the solder points, making a U.P. modified PSP shock resistant which is important for handheld systems. Installation aids are included, and installation diagrams for all PSP hardware revisions will be available for download, together with flasher software application, from our reseller’s websites. More about installation together with install pictures closer to release.

The FPC cable end to which the USB connector board attaches is routed into the battery compartment and sits above the battery. The battery cover can be replaced after flash updating and the cable remains safely in the compartment until the next update is required, whereupon the USB connector can be clipped in place within a few seconds. This means that the U.P. is completely contained within the PSP under normal usage and avoids any unsightly external modifications to your PSP. PSP is after all portable, let’s keep it that way!

In order to maximise the benefits that U.P. can provide its users, we have decided to take an open source approach with U.P and will be releasing source code for any software we release as well as full documentation for the U.P. hardware interface - including information on how to control U.P. from within PSP programs. This will allow anybody to create software which can take advantage of what U.P. has to offer. We have also sent a few prototype units away to some of the scene’s best software hackers in order to give them a headstart at working on custom flash replacements - cant wait to see what people will come up with!

Features Announced:

  • Ultra reliable and feature rich Actel ProASIC Plus FPGA
  • Full Speed USB 1.1 ASIC onboard
  • Branded 32MB NAND flash onboard (same flash as used in PSP)
  • Stable and reliable flashing software freely available for download
  • Installation verification using flashing software
  • Ultra compact four layer PCB
  • High quality Japanese connectors
  • USB cable included
  • FPC cable included, reducing installation effort and improving shock resistance
  • Copper enamel wire included
  • Open platform development system for software developers
  • Installation has been optimized to fit entirely inside PSP
  • All PSP hardware versions/regions supported
  • User updatable flash
  • Low power consumption
  • Flash select via button press
  • Ultra compact PCB has been designed to avoid signal bounce

Bundled Stuff:

  • U.P. MAIN MODULE x1
  • U.P. USB BOARD x1
  • USB CABLE x1

PSPColem v1.0.3 Released

greg | May 28, 2006

Possibly the final version of PSPColem from ZX-81, though I’m sure it will not be the last PSP emulator from the man himself. As you’re probably aware, PSPColem is a ColecoVision emulator for the PSP.

PSPColem - ColecoVision emulator screenshot

New in v1.0.3

  • Add Load/Save/Del states menu!
  • Add .col as valid extention for rom files
  • Bug Fix: emulator configuration is now properly loaded on startup.

Sound is also fully supported in this release, as well as the CPU speed issue has been fixed.

Download PSPColem v1.0.3

Enjoy another fine release from ZX-81!
