avp has released an incredibly handy tool responsible for ripping UMD discs over a wireless network. The concept is simple and the idea is fantastic - the network listener sits on your PC and the UMD ripper is ran from your PSP like any other homebrew application. A quote from the readme.txt:
UmdNetRipper copies recursively the whole UMD onto the network using a very naive protocol (just printing “DIRECTORY:
” whenever it enters a new directory and “FILE: ” when starting with a new filedump. A simple listener program like netcat can be used to capture the ripped data into a file. Then, an unfold program can create the original file/directory structure.
Ripping UMD discs across your network is relatively fast compared to dumping the contents to a memory stick - especially if your UMD exceeds 1GB, and you don’t have a 2GB stick handy.
How to use:
- on your PSP, create a connection with a *static* IP address (UmdNetRipper uses the first such connection it finds).
- edit config.txt to reflect the IP address of your server (your PC for instance); you may also change the port from the default value 20000 into any other value you like.
- copy the two sub folders UmdNetRip and UmdNetRip% under Drive:\PSP\GAME\ .
- copy config.txt to Drive:\PSP\GAME\UmdNetRipper
- on your PC, use any network listener that will dump a TCP stream into a file. I used netcat (nc), which I have included in the distribution (GNU License, I hope it was OK to do that, wasn’t it?): nc.exe -l -p 20000 > file.rip (on Windows, you may see a message from your firewall, asking you whether to allow nc to listen to the network, it is safe to say yes here).
- now go to your PSP, insert your favorite UMD, and activate the ripper.
- the ripper will use the static connection, then it will try to connect to your PC at the address you specified in config.txt. If you are lucky, the ripper will recurse through the whole of the UMD, transferring each and every file to your PC (if you are not lucky, the rip will get “stuck” somewhere in the middle; dont give up; read on).
- you will know if the rip ended successfully if you see a message on your PSP screen saying “Rip terminated successfully”. Do not assume that it was successful if you do not see this.
Everything you need to know is in the Readme.txt.

This is awesome!
don’t work on 2.60. Froze at the first screen.
damn, it froze on 2.5. oh wait, 2.x is gay. fag0ts. 1.5 rulez0rz!
this sounds pretty nice. lets hope its not to slow
multi firmware users rule over all! # 7 get a life.
This is all well and done for Backing up, and easy to copy to the PC, I wonder how long it will be before people will be burning, copying or even overwriting UMD’s . . .
a! #7 you ain’t funny bitch. just cause you got 1.5 dont mean you the shit.
OMG! #7 your a bumb ass, I find it very sad that the only kicks in your life is shit like that. I love my 2.60 firmware you dip shit…..tsk tsk tsk, that is most sad. lol dude life is full of dicks oh well thats life peace out everyone.
1.5 is the best for homebrew, but it’s not the best firmware . I have 1.5, but I do want .h264 and internet and tv (although i need a locationfree first). I just hope that the whole 1.5-2.0+ is just dropped. Anyways, great program. More convient than the split disc option in fastloader. Gonna start ripping.
Wow well I hope the great progress continues and yes its great to have 1.50 firmware. BUt there is an advantage of having 2.60 you get to play gta cheat device a good webroser rss feeds and you still get homebrew, emulators with wifi capability. But having 1.5 is pretty awesome too. But you know even having 2.60 will be but a dream when you are required to update to 3.0. Also anyone who has 2.1 or 2.50 you might at well upgrade to 2.60.
hmm sadly thought I dont see this emulator getting very far the psp isnt powerful enough to run n64 at full speed. If The author gets mario 64 or goldeneye running at 60 fps I’ll give him 50 bucks.
I HAVE THE MOST AMAZING IDEA. why not make a “NET UMD EMULATOR” reading and emulating UMD off wifi..
i spent 100$ on a 512 and i wanna play GTA:LCS before i decide to dump 50$ on the game and forcing myself to upgrade to firmware 2.0
fuck 1.5
#15, i’d bet a million and fifty dollars you use firefox, and you’ve mixed your tabs up (as i most often do), smoke one for me matey! I’m smokin one for yall right now, 420 boys!
This is fucken great news! Well done alien vs predator :P, you’ve done a most stellar job ol chap, keep it up. Def one of the better releases i’ve seen, and one for the haters, this is the first time i’ve seen this news, and OMG shock horror, it was on psp-hacks. Ofcourse i’ve been living a life all day, unlike the losers hanging out at psp sites all day, telling the developers to get a life, oh the irony!
At the moment life is good.
Another one for the haters, there’s no such thing as heaven or hell, they’re nothing but self made constructs within the physical boundaries of now. Please keep your festering hate to yourselves, have a nice day and please come again.
…I think I need a tutorial….
