religion was created because people didn’t have the scientific understanding we have today, and even with that understanding, we’re still leaning towards the three O god.
we are all the effect of something cause of our parents, just as they are the effect of their parents cause (getting it on). there has to be a first cause and that is god. it’s a infinite, unexplainable presence/force that gives us inkling of understanding as to how we came about.

Anyway, my view on religion is as follows.

The bible is an entertaining story. Those that beleive it is fact are kidding theirselves. I mean, the bible has been said to PROVE the earth is between 6000-8000 years old. It is, supposedly, gods word, god is infallible, and God created everything, right?

So he created Mathematics and Science, the rules of our existence. Yeah?

So why does such LAWS then prove that the world is Billions of years old? (8 I think).

Anyway, faith in itself is harmless. Religion, on the other hand, is not. How many wars have been fought on the basis of religous beleif? The US are fighting one just now (and have dragged the UK and half of Europe in with them).

And you can go back as far as the beginings of the bible (almost) and find this to be the case. People persicuted because of religous beleifs.

Anyway, reading a book in itself is not harmless. How the reader interprets that book could, however, be extremly harmful.

It makes me sad to see so much hatred towards religion on here. I’m not going to add or subtract to it because that would just make me as low as those who have. I appreciate this, because I’m a geek and I often forget my Bible when I want to read. Although I will say I haven’t found a good reason to go through all the trouble to hack my psp to play emulators and such when I can just do it on the pc. No need to have that on the go if I can’t play my normal psp games or have to buy a larger mem stick.

I think any, reasonable, discussion on religion is a good thing. So long as it isn’t just “I Hate Religion” without anything backed up with a reason.

First off, though IT IS A FACT that more people have died due to religious reason than for any other causes combined, it is also a fact that the religions themselves are not entirely to blame, rather they are often just the excuse.
The ability to rationalize ANY action, including but not limited to murder, is not only limited to religion (though organized religion is the biggest player here), but to any number of doctrines, which is what causes many, otherwise benelovent and typically intelligent people to shy away from religion.
Personally, I regret that so many in this world would much rather have a “preprogrammed-reality” fixed into their minds, instead of actively seeking the truth to their individual existances.
People, knowledge, society and the world in general should, as time passes, more forward and find better, more enlightened way to exist – this becomes increasingly difficult if we allow ourselves to be locked into thousand+ year-old doctrines.
Though I am a firm believer in remebering the past and it important events, I should think that it is for the sake of learning anf moving forward from them, not for the sake of a 5000 year, constantly repeating nightmare, for humanity and it the species it is supposed to co-exist with.
I very much respect the beliefes of all the individuals I meet, however, I feel that humanity as a whole has not yet earn the right to call itself intelligent… for to be truely intelligent one would have to bare some key characteristics, some of which are called tollerance and acceptance, compasion and empathy and the ability to NOT destroy ones own home or savagely curtail the freedoms and right of ANY life for the sake of profit.

I’m gonna try and address all the common points I’ve seen so far.
The most common one:
If God were a real, kind, and loving God, why are people going hungry? why are there still so many bloody wars? and most importantly, why are so many of them fought in the name of God and Religion?
Here’s my answer:
God gave man a very important gift, one he will never take away: Choice.
We have the choice to believe God and follow Him. We also have the choice to go bashing Him and, therefore most likely, disobey Him.
God’s ideal world would be where no one would go hungry, there would be no wars, and ultimatley would be a “happily ever after” world. But right from the start, man-kind has been disobeying Gods instructions in order to have such a world. So we can’t go blaiming God for the messed up world we live in. It was our fault we ended up like this, not God’s. As for wars and bloodshed in the name of religion?
Religion is the Excuse, not the Reason, for this kind of war. Man kind has always been looking for good excuses for wrong actions.

Both Creation and Evolution have elements that can’t be scientifically proven. therefore, both beliefs are Faith based. If someone attempts to mix the two, than your bound to come up with some contradictions. You can’t mix two contradicting faiths and call it truth. Neither can you mix the two and claim that the resulting errors are proof against Creation and the Bible, thats illogical.

In responce to #12, I’m a Christian, and I go to church (although that certainly isn’t what validates being a Christian) and I love hacking devices to see what more I can make them do. (the reason I ended up at this sight in the first place) and I use back-up copies af disc all the time. why risk damaging the only retail disc I have for the software. If someone won’t use a back-up disc just because of their beliefs, than I’m not gonna mock them because of it. but I still think back-ups are ok to use.

I believe what you are saying is accurate in the application of Roman Catholosism. it was an attempt (somewhat successful in some repects) at useing religion to control the people, gain money off them, and ultimatley give more power to the leadership.

I’m guessing that this thread is just about dead, but I’d like to clear some stuff up for metalspector.

You have a generally correct idea of what ‘free will’, ‘choice’ or ‘choice of liberty’ is. However, you must realize that the concept of free will means that (at least in Christianity) God let humans in the very beginning (read Genesis) choose if they’d like to obey or disobey God. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, thereby disallowing people to enter heaven normally and creating ‘evil’, which everybody experiences today. God solved this problem by allowing Jesus to die on the cross.

As for *why* God did that in the first place; there are several things which people believe:

One, this Earth that we live in today is not *meant* to be a paradise. Instead, God intended people to enter a real paradise after their time on earth.

And/or two, ‘good’ and ‘evil’ lie on opposite ends of a spectrum. Without extreme ‘evil’, how can we discern what extreme ‘good’ is? This also implies that God set life as a test for us.

And/or three, If there was no evil, then the concept of ‘faith’ would be “skewed” (kudos to whoever said that earlier.) You see, if God *made* you believe in him, you couldn’t really call that faith right?

In conclusion, those are some common answers to the ‘Problem of Evil’.

Btw, I’m not religious in any sense (maybe agnostic leaning towards atheism, but whatever), just a high school religious studies student who found some of these replies interesting.
