Quake 2 PSP port by McZonk of TEE beta

Gary13579 | January 11, 2006

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the PSP port of Quake 2 for a while now, and a beta is finnally here!

Controls

Download here.

Please note, after doing some testing (and common sense, McZonk is against piracy), I’ve figured out that you MUST delete your X:/ISO folder off of your memory card. I am not sure if you need to delete it, or rename it, but it looks like you need to delete all ISOs. This is a pretty lame attempt to stop piracy, as it is stopping people that legally back up games…
Update: I’ve just confirmed that renaming your ISO folder will allow this game to run. Just use a program such as FileAssistant++ to do it.

Quake 2 is looking great at this stage and the controls fell wonderfull. However i do have a big problem with this “ISO folder issue”. for a homebrew developer to say to this community what it can and cant do is just rediculous, i understand that he has good intentions, but i am one of the few people who actually spend the time to convert my games into isos becuase i feel that the battery life is longer and when sitting at my job i can get longer gameplay, so anyways telling me i have to get rid of that to play quake 2 is unfair and wrong. The hassle of renaming the folder every time i want to play is too out of the way i will wait for him to smarten up before continuing to play quake 2.

For a beta it is impressive, had no issues loading. Just wish there could of been some sound fx’s. As far as the iso folder, tkaes less then 30 seconds to change it with FA and get back to quake, i dont see why people are complaing “OMG i have to move fingures cant hit the button, such a work out.”

I havent had any crashes yet. Cant wait for an update. Be pretty kick ass if wifi multiplayer would come out for it. Be like the good old days of Q2.

if he didn’t even think that people would just rename the iso folder or that iso loaders would just allow a different folder name to be browsed then i don’t want him as the pin-up for recent psp development. f that. If he can’t appreciate other peoples work, why should they appreciate his. I say all the iso loaders should scan for his bullshit port and not work if it is present. how would he like that. i guarantee everyone would use the iso loaders. what does that say about his pos port. it sucks and will never be as cool as his “legal” port. if i wanted to play quake i would have bought a shitty computer for christmas not a psp!

Homebrewers trying to create new restrictions on what code should and shouldn’t be run on the PSP is really sad, I think.

Programmers: Be against the usage of ISO files all you like. Write it all over your homepage and in the readme files of everything you release to the public, if that makes you happy. That’s your decision. I can read the info if I want to, and if you have anything good to say, I might be swayed to change my mind about the whole thing. But try to bully me into changing my oppinion like this, and the only thing you’ll accomplish is a lot of bad will and thoughts like “Who does he think he is? Does he think he is somehow better than me, the little shit?”.

A really bad move, as far as I’m concerned. And I am sure lots of other people agree with me. And most of the ones that don’t is probably people who are too used to this kind of abuse that they take it without comment… “Changing the name of the ISO folder? Sure, I can do that…”

McZonk: I really like your Quake port and all the effort you put into it… but please, PLEASE don’t shove your morals down my throat when I’m trying to enjoy your creation. :/

Comment by Drachenflieger
2006-01-12 13:48:42

#36: I guess you could be right, and this somehow is an unintentional bug in the software… I highly doubt it, it’s a bit too specific to be a random fluke… and if it’s gone in the next release, with an explanation to that affect, I will sincerly apologize to McZonk. But until then, I remain sceptically hostile. :P

I’m postitive Quake 2 is copywrited.

Even if ID doesn’t care for him usen thier shit then still if he’s got such good morals he should offer to purchase the rights off of them before he made this.

I know I am not getting it ever just because this guy is one of them homo’s who cant stand ppl who download ISO’s for some fagget reason.

41: He has built the quake engine for the PSP (which many other games use, for example Half Life). This to my current knowledge is not copywritten.

The .pak file is the copywritten data, and in this it includes the DEMO files (I think, I havn’t downloaded it). Anyone can get these. He clearly states that if you own Quake 2, you can copy their PAK files.

Lots of effort has been put into making this, to the pleasure of many homebrewers. If you don’t have anything nice to say, then keep your mouth shut tbh. It’s people like you who want to make many developes stop

All you guys complaining about not being allowed to play your isos are idiots. Your the reason Sony has to release new security updates in the first place. So you should all shut the fuck up. McZonk worked hard to code this even if the beta has bugs it will eventually become an excellent piece of PSP homebrew. I have a good idea for all you guys fucking complaining. GO PORT YOUR OWN FUCKING GAMES YOU STUPID FUCKS!

I hope you get caught for pirating and have your mothers take it in the ass from Sony lawyers.

BTW, I just solved the ISO folder problem with both Fastloader and UMD emulator.

Diskedit the eboot.pbp file and find the string fatms:/ISO and change it to read fatms:/USO
Then rename the ISO folder to USO
Works Perfectly.

BTW, McZonk, not to undermine your intent, but this is really just pulling a SONY on us all doing this. I for one use backups to speed up gameplay (Untold legends anyone?). Pulling this kind of stunt just fragments the already shattering community of PSP homebrew.
Kudos on the programming, but don’t impress your moral values on the world.

keep up the amazing work and just ignore the people with terrible things to say.

#54, you are misinformed and obviously under-educated. he had to rebuild the entire engine. if he’s so ‘untalented’, why don’t you woo all of us with your ‘talent’ and release some original code or an awesome port.

First up, congratulations to McZonk on porting a fantastic game to PSP. It must have taken many days and nights of work. There’s no disputing the effort that went into it.

However, I agree with some of the above posters. In my opinion, coding it to crash if it recognises an ISO folder is really foul play. I appreciate that McZonk might have strong feelings about piracy, but forcing his opinions down people’s throats is a little arrogant, and ultimately, ineffective.

There’s a variety of ways to get around the check, from the simple temporary renaming of the directory, to the slightly more complicated but more permenant editing of your loader’s files to recognise a different directory (Kudos TensaiSama – Post #52.)

These tricks, though, are not really the point of my post. McZonk’s actions are not only alienating game pirates (who will eventually always find a way around “safeguards”), but also legitimate gamers who back up their UMD’s for additional speed and convenience, and in my particular case, people who use iso based homebrew. For example, I use the Fried Up Browser homebrew to browse the web on my PSP, which does not involve “stealing” a game (although admittedly, the software was originally ripped from a game). However, as it is ISO based – same result – McZonk’s port doesn’t work.

I was very excited when I saw Quake 2 had been ported to PSP, but after discovering what had been included in the code, I deleted it from my PSP. I have nothing but respect for people who dedicate their time and energy into creating new programs for our wonderful little machines, but I have no time for someone who uses their talent to force their own version of morality down my throat

This Q2 release violates the GPL: which I’m sure plenty of people here believe in very strongly: it’s the foundation of open source! As Q2’s source is released under the GPL, you must include information on where to obtain the modified source code (or include the source itself) with the release. You can’t just include binaries, which is what has been done here.

Very good work here and big respect due, personally i think the peeps should start working on a half life conversion, with sound if possible as it would have a greater longitivity due to it being the more advanced game on the quake 2 engine. It also had a better colour pallate a.i and gameplay etc. To the few kiddies on here who “diss” I.D and quake 2 etc what you guys gotta remember is that the are people like me and others who post on here, who are old enough to remember going out to buy the first FPS shooter which was Wolfenstein “3D” for 386 pc or a pentium 75mhz+ if you had £1500 or $2700 dollers (lol) and it was made by I.D. Quake 2 rocked for anyone with a voodoo 2 or loads of ram and good processor (mhz actually mattered then). So dont go saying quake and i.d are crap etc because these earlier games are nothing but old school toys for you but for me and others who helped fund the early industry its cool to see this game on such a small scale on the psp. Be cool

Half Life used the Quake 1 engine (albeit tweaked)….which is possibly why it was so inferior to Quake2 for online play.
