Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is NOT 1.5 compatible!
Gary13579 | October 25, 2005
As I am sure most of you already know, the new GTA came (Liberty City Stories) was released yesterday. I’m confident that this will be one of the best selling PSP games of the year, just because of the name behind it (meaning I haven’t played it :D).
The bad thing is, it isn’t 1.5 compatible. It uses the new video codec of 2.0 (the AVC codec) to play movies (this is what I think it is, and what many reliable sources on IRC have been saying).
If you rip the ISO to your memory card, I am sure there will be a ripkit coming out soon that will remove the movies and allow playback on v1.5.
But what about the movies? Surely you want to play the game with cinematechs. This is where UMD Emulator comes into play.
I am confident that it will be possible to use the flash emulation to emulate certain video/audio PRX/RCO files so that the game will play, however, only time will tell.
Until then, if you only have a 1.5 PSP, think hard before buying this game.
Before you all go “OMFG this noob is so stupid”, I will mention it.
You can upgrade to play the OFFICIAL UMD, but you cannot play it back upped off of the memory card. Also, there is the fact that you will have to use the downgrader.
I am all for downgrading, but the long-term affects are still unknown. There are some rumours going around that certain UMD movies stop working after downloading. I don’t know if this is true.
On a semi-related note, I was looking through the ISO a little bit ago, and noticed that the game is partlyusing Lua (yes, Lua, the program you all think sucks for the PSP) to code certain aspects.
There is a folder PSP_GAME/USRDIR/LUASCRIPTS, where the few scripts are held. The rest of the game is coded using the normal C++.
The lua scripts are compiled, but it is possible for someone to de-compile (or decode) the scripts, and figure out how to alter them. This would mean a few things in the game could be changed just by coding a little bit.
Update:
Thanks to FRAKISTAN (comment #65) for the following, this is a statement from Naoneo (master of the firmware ;))
As it stands i’ve taken the better part of the past 5 hours analysing things, testing various methods for both my retail umd and my on personal iso dump, and i’ve come to the following conclusion.
GTA:LCS REQUIRES the v2.00 firmware to operate, both the eboot and prx’s are encoded in v2.00 fashion, this means that no ammount of file swapping or ‘patching’ of the boot.bin, far short of recompiling the original sources from scratch, is going to make a shred of difference, because the v1.50 firmware simply cannot execute or run v2.00 encypted data. This leaves only 2 possible choices :
Upgrade to 2.00 and play the retail game
Someone (im looking at you humma), gets firmware loading nailed down solid, allowing the complete v2.00 firmware to be loaded up with the umd, or iso set in memory to load, it will then execute from either umd or iso without any issues. This is far more than just differently encoded video or audio files, every bit of the code has been compiled and encoded for the v2.00 firmware, and as such until a way to successfully load the v2.00 firmware without issue arrives, only those owning a v2.00 psp and a legitimate copy of the game, will be able to play GTA:LCS.
Great work sony, i must say.
You can read more about how the EBOOT was compiled, and how they are trying to fix it here.

first post!@!!!! this sucks!!
I know. I was planning to get this game, but now…I’ll wait until they have a upgrader that compatible with other games I have.
Time to buy another psp.
fa sho #3 fa sho
I have always had a 1.5 PSP but decided to upgrade to 2.0 to play this game. Once I am complety done with it I will downgrade again.
Or if I run into some more cash I will just buy another psp.
Both Greg and I failed to get it running without using 2.0
yeah well we could all see this coming anyways >
Is there a version changer that will work with it?
Common wizzkids, crack your brains on this…
#8. you should read. 1.5 doesnt have the right codec
Well if one wanted to you could rip out th emovies and still play it right?
#11. read plz. the answer is yes.
#11 Maybe.
I am currently working on a ripkit, but it is really hard for me, I don’t have a 1gb memory card.
common you little crackhead … we just need to trash those stupid jerking movie … and we will fuck sony ass again !!!
until then … just convert free sample from barelyteen.com and watch them on you psp !!!
LUA SCRIPT??!! HAHAHAHA…
i ripped out movies and music w/ iso size of around 540mb’s w/ no luck.
#17 There goes that theory…
I think there is a Codec Checkout at the starting of the game because there is an error with an specific code when u try to launch the game with UMD emulator in System Menu mode. so maybe we need to modify the EBOOT.PBP first of all ?
the FFFFFED3 Error is
encryption related.
Video have been tested OK for 1.5 by loading them into X-Men Legent ISO
might have to leave it to Humma for maybe a new loader. Remember Death Jr. and it’s hype.
Homebrew, or GTA. Its just so hard to choose.
Damn someone better figure this shit out, I want Sonic Advance on my PSP soon from the GBA emulator!
does anyone know what videos in the game are AVC/H.246? if its all the cut sceens… seems i might have to upgrade and buy it… if its only a few intro videos then i’ll wait for a modded ISO
This game does NOT use the new avc format. I don’t know where that started or how anyone can prove that it does. This game isn’t working in emulators for some other reason, just like Death Jr. when it first came out.
removed
Oh… But on the same note, i can’t prove that it doesn’t, that is if it’s being used in those IMG files cuz it’s deffinetly NOT being used in the PMFs or the AT3 audio files
isnt there an EBOOT Loader 0.7 for the PSP 2.0 Firmware that can run like 75% of homebrews
removed
28. What’s your point, that’s Homebrew not isos
Again, those AT3 files and PMFs all play on my 1.50
#26 why are you even browimg this website
removed
up to date news !!!!! biach!!!
# 30 my point was that if you like homebrews that much then just upgrade to 2.0 and then run your homebrews through EBOOT Loader 0.7
removed
# 32 why does it make him the loser when he experiences more entertainment with his PSP than you
i tried homebrew.. it sucked … but not as much Dic-k as #35.. you know … it just sux… the only thing accomplished was the downgrader…. yeah i tried that too.. and i tried alot of crappy homebrews too… so it’s better just to stay up to date…. but stilll hahaahahahahahahah!!!!!! oh yeah is that all you can say… “LICK MY BALLZ” #35??? like damn are you gay.. cuz you posted two comments with the word ballz and lick??? it’s kinda weird!!! loser!!! LMAO!!
removed
I ripped out the sound/music, and videos. Size comes out to 511MB, NOT SMALL ENOUGH to fit on a 512MB card. So I started looking at SFX files like SFX4_PSP file to be exact. I replaced this file with a smaller one in the same directory. Now my rip is down to 469MB. Tried all the fastloader/umdloader shit, nothing works. So the Boot.Bin and eBoot.Bin files will have to be looked at. They are the exact same file too.
Have fun.

but still i hate homebrews. they do suck.. really bad..
haha why are videogame kids so immature? everyone talks shit about simple questions, and act like its so easy “just do it hackers so i can get the game for free” you people should be a little more grateful for the people that actually have brains and figure these things out. thats why theres so many fake files and bullshit stories that makes it hard to sift thru all the shit and get the facts about things. grow up already.
no you… i’m a 5th grader….
just so you guys know, GTA Liberty City Stories is probably the best game out for the PSP today. It has better graphics than san andreas, and there are many new features, fuck homebrew apps, if you like them so much, beat the game then afterwards download the MPH Downgrader again, i wouldn’t if i were you though…
anyone who thinks homebrew sucks doesn’t know how to work it. W/out homebrew, i’d be a bored broke-ass mofo. Instead I’m rich and enjoying the scene.
Hey 45. What are the load time(s) like?
honestly the maturity of some people is retarded, are you insainly stupid or just stoned. probably a little of both, however the question now becomes will sony start doing this wil all there games in the future? and thus the war goes on….
Hmmmm, 70+ games, or gta?
dude yeah ivce been working on shit and i come up to a conclusion.. u know the media player maybe the creaters of that can splice the video setting so it can play avi but the down part is u would have to find a way to make it run wile the games is runnin so i think linux would be the anser lol
The answer is, whatever sony does, it will be cracked. There is a lot of smart ass people in this scene.
looks like im giving up homebrews for now. Once im done with the game or they hack it so it runs on 1.5 then ill downgrade it back
GTA will not work without 2.0! What about 1.5 to 2.0 via WAB Version Changer 2.5? X-Men Legends 2 works fine.
damit, read this article befor you post fity-three
well ok, there’s two option there, if you wanna play. You buy the game, update to 2.0 and downgrade to 1.5 (i did it about 10 times now for the web browser and all that stuff) and my psp still works fine. option 2 , you wait and see, maybe a umdloader on 2.0, or a rip for 1.5 btw, if you get the iso, its about 1.28 gig, extract it and rebuild and you get a 800meg file. whats up with that?
I THINK ITS TIME TO RENT THE GAME AND KEEP IT.
#55, true, what is up with that??? and #56 roflmao….u remind me of myself.
When I rebuilt it it was still 1.2gb lol ur on crack :P
Ripped now it’s 458mb, fits on my 512 stick. I get the FFFFFED whatever error. Anyway to get UMD Emulator to boot on 2.00?
well first i ripped the audio wich was around 200 megs, i was suprised it went down to 458 meg after that, so i unrared the iso, and extracted the iso with winrar and if you do properties on the folder, it states 850 megs. i rebuild the iso and got it on my memorycard, but still no luck. same error FFFFF….
I’m on 2.0 and am using the Eboot loader, and the SNES emulator works perfect, NES, RIN, PSPVice, the Sega Genesis Emu works… I’ll try more, but this eboot loader 0.7 or whatever is good enough for me to keep the 2.0 on there. FOrget 2.5, but the 2.0 hacks are good enough for me. Plus better DVD conversion using AVC, + web browser. I won’t go back to 1.5 ever. Bring on GTA and 2.0. I’m here to stay.
Id rather update then play some stupid little mods id rather play GTA and besides i have 2 psps
gta will soon work for 1.5, i might as well wait for that day to come since i didn’t even finish beating all the other cool games =D
My mom bought me two PSP’s. YAAAAHE. If I was your dad I would smack you….
I will take the NeoCD games and SNES MK3 over GTA for now. There will be some crack soon. There always is.
P.S I could be your dad…
there is a fix on mininova.org,anyone with the iso download it and try it
According to Naoneo (who has a reputation for knowing what he’s talking about)
“As it stands i’ve taken the better part of the past 5 hours analysing things, testing various methods for both my retail umd and my on personal iso dump, and i’ve come to the following conclusion.

Great work sony, i must say.”
In other words, this is not a codec issue. (proven by people who have put the music/videos into other iso’s and report them working fine)
Also it is being reported that version changers do NOT work (for running the game off UMD). You must actually update your firmware to 2.0 (not 2.01)
There is also a rumour that it works with fatsloader using firmware 1.52,try it people
no it does not work, false rumour
those of you who say the 2.0 prx files are encrypted differently - this is true. However, the encryption has been broken and this is documented.
I’m sure that Humma just needs to update umd emulator to correctly decrypt the 2.0 prx files on 1.5 firmware and we’ll be set. Just hold your horses.
Um I am pretty sure sony will be implementing this on all new releases in future games. I know soon someone will find a way around it. I love rockstar and will be buying the game, never would I use an ISO of it. I for sure will not be upgrading and downgrading all the time. I think it’s time to get a second PSP for all the new stuff and I will keep my 1.50 for homebrew and older stuff and ones that have been cracked. 2 prob cool, be fun to play multi, does both PSP’s have to have same firmware? to play multi.
#69. no both does not have to be the same.
see psp-hacks.com no one really gives a fuck about someone charging to downgrade a psp, only you seem to.BTW how much can http://www.psp-hacks.com do one for me for???
BUY A GAME?
LoL silly boy
Sony will win , Sony will win. Face it…these are just the early games…the games are going to get much much better. and sony is gonna tighten thier defences tighter and tighter as they go. pretty soon all the homebrew stuff is gonna be abandoned by everyone but the hardcore fans and all of the rest of us are goign to have to move on.
I think sony psp is great…but the games are too expensive. they should be like 10 pounds or something , not 30. its just a bloody game. i’ll buy second hand ps2 games from gamestation for liek 10 pounds each. no problem….but paying 30/40 pounds…thats just too much…im poor…i need food and to pay my bills.
i like japanese companies and i liek to play everybodies golf…becos it is a great game. its probably better than gta anyway…….i was never impressed by the gta games…basically that attracts peopel is that its about stealing cars and beating up civilians and all that ‘cool’ stuff….its stupid….the charachter isnt even aninated properly….the games are simple…theres no atmosphere…
its not like GREAT game…like reident evil 3 or metal gear solid or god of war….or syphon filter on the psone …its just a second rate game that lets you hit people with basebll bats….soemtimes u just hit someone so may times and they fall on the floor and are bleeding…and u KNOW the sprite is dead but u just keep hitting it again and again ….u dont even know why anymore…u just cant eb bothered doing the mission so u keep hitting the dead sprite…its pontless…
sorry for the noob question but i have a 1.5. and if i just end up buying the GTA: LCS. can i just update to 2.0 play it, and when i get tired of it just downgrade to 1.5. and just update again when i want to play GTA. and just keep repeating it over again? thanks again for the help.
Damn I hope Midway treasures, ghost and goblins and Capcom Classics don’t have this shit…maybe by that time, a workaround will be found. I’m keeping my fingers crossed
Wait for it. Homebrews are just plain awesome. Plus homebrews never stop. They keep coming new versions and new software. Keep up the great work.
I JUST FOUND AN EBOOT FIX,PATCHIT AND BOOTED WITH UMDEMU,AND IT WORKS JUST FINE,THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT IT TAKES 851mb ON MY 1G MEMORYSTICK
77. i don’t believe you. Just saying.
What we need is an iso loader for 2.0 an problem solved. The audio and video aren’t the problem, it’s some 2.0 encyrption shit :( so no patch would do the job
JUST VISIT MININOVA,ITS A TORRENT FILE FOR DOWNLOAD PSP GAMES. http://www.mininova.com
Can anyone confirm if #77/#79 works? I’m going to download the torrent and try for myself as well.
MY BAD,SORRY ITS http://www.mininova.org [not mininova.com]
hmmm… seeming im from the UK i’ll have to wait till Nov, 4th but im worried that if i buy a UK game because its a different regoin UMD it might require an update to something higher than 2.00.
i could order a US copy of the game though (will it work with my JAP PSP?)
are you sure , i found one fix eboot. but he doesn’t work. i have the error code ffffd
the file in mininova dosn’t work. don’t dream. the corrupted file is not the eboot, just the vids and the sound file.
Tried #77, downloaded it from mininova. Extracted the ISO and rebuilt it with the new EBOOT. But it did’nt work.
ok,heres my stuff,it worked for me,but wen its loading when i start the game it frezzes
its the same EBOOT,nithing has been changed, somebody stupid thought it might be funny
BUT I AM SLEEPY,I WILL WORK WITH IT TOMORROW
Anyone know for sure the UK release date for this? lots of news sites saying it’s now gonna be 4th november
