Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is NOT 1.5 compatible!

As I am sure most of you already know, the new GTA came (Liberty City Stories) was released yesterday. I’m confident that this will be one of the best selling PSP games of the year, just because of the name behind it (meaning I haven’t played it :D).
The bad thing is, it isn’t 1.5 compatible. It uses the new video codec of 2.0 (the AVC codec) to play movies (this is what I think it is, and what many reliable sources on IRC have been saying).
If you rip the ISO to your memory card, I am sure there will be a ripkit coming out soon that will remove the movies and allow playback on v1.5.
But what about the movies? Surely you want to play the game with cinematechs. This is where UMD Emulator comes into play.
I am confident that it will be possible to use the flash emulation to emulate certain video/audio PRX/RCO files so that the game will play, however, only time will tell.
Until then, if you only have a 1.5 PSP, think hard before buying this game.
Before you all go “OMFG this noob is so stupid”, I will mention it.
You can upgrade to play the OFFICIAL UMD, but you cannot play it back upped off of the memory card. Also, there is the fact that you will have to use the downgrader.
I am all for downgrading, but the long-term affects are still unknown. There are some rumours going around that certain UMD movies stop working after downloading. I don’t know if this is true.
On a semi-related note, I was looking through the ISO a little bit ago, and noticed that the game is partlyusing Lua (yes, Lua, the program you all think sucks for the PSP) to code certain aspects.
There is a folder PSP_GAME/USRDIR/LUASCRIPTS, where the few scripts are held. The rest of the game is coded using the normal C++.
The lua scripts are compiled, but it is possible for someone to de-compile (or decode) the scripts, and figure out how to alter them. This would mean a few things in the game could be changed just by coding a little bit.

As it stands i’ve taken the better part of the past 5 hours analysing things, testing various methods for both my retail umd and my on personal iso dump, and i’ve come to the following conclusion.
GTA:LCS REQUIRES the v2.00 firmware to operate, both the eboot and prx’s are encoded in v2.00 fashion, this means that no ammount of file swapping or ‘patching’ of the boot.bin, far short of recompiling the original sources from scratch, is going to make a shred of difference, because the v1.50 firmware simply cannot execute or run v2.00 encypted data.This leaves only 2 possible choices :
Upgrade to 2.00 and play the retail game
Someone (im looking at you humma), gets firmware loading nailed down solid, allowing the complete v2.00 firmware to be loaded up with the umd, or iso set in memory to load, it will then execute from either umd or iso without any issues.This is far more than just differently encoded video or audio files, every bit of the code has been compiled and encoded for the v2.00 firmware, and as such until a way to successfully load the v2.00 firmware without issue arrives, only those owning a v2.00 psp and a legitimate copy of the game, will be able to play GTA:LCS.

I think there is a Codec Checkout at the starting of the game because there is an error with an specific code when u try to launch the game with UMD emulator in System Menu mode. so maybe we need to modify the EBOOT.PBP first of all ?

This game does NOT use the new avc format. I don’t know where that started or how anyone can prove that it does. This game isn’t working in emulators for some other reason, just like Death Jr. when it first came out.

I ripped out the sound/music, and videos. Size comes out to 511MB, NOT SMALL ENOUGH to fit on a 512MB card. So I started looking at SFX files like SFX4_PSP file to be exact. I replaced this file with a smaller one in the same directory. Now my rip is down to 469MB. Tried all the fastloader/umdloader shit, nothing works. So the Boot.Bin and eBoot.Bin files will have to be looked at. They are the exact same file too.

It has better graphics than san andreas, and there are many new features, fuck homebrew apps, if you like them so much, beat the game then afterwards download the MPH Downgrader again, i wouldn’t if i were you though…

well ok, there’s two option there, if you wanna play. You buy the game, update to 2.0 and downgrade to 1.5 (i did it about 10 times now for the web browser and all that stuff) and my psp still works fine. option 2 , you wait and see, maybe a umdloader on 2.0, or a rip for 1.5 btw, if you get the iso, its about 1.28 gig, extract it and rebuild and you get a 800meg file. whats up with that?

Ripped now it’s 458mb, fits on my 512 stick. I get the FFFFFED whatever error. Anyway to get UMD Emulator to boot on 2.00?
well first i ripped the audio wich was around 200 megs, i was suprised it went down to 458 meg after that, so i unrared the iso, and extracted the iso with winrar and if you do properties on the folder, it states 850 megs. i rebuild the iso and got it on my memorycard, but still no luck. same error FFFFF….
I’m on 2.0 and am using the Eboot loader, and the SNES emulator works perfect, NES, RIN, PSPVice, the Sega Genesis Emu works… I’ll try more, but this eboot loader 0.7 or whatever is good enough for me to keep the 2.0 on there. FOrget 2.5, but the 2.0 hacks are good enough for me. Plus better DVD conversion using AVC, + web browser. I won’t go back to 1.5 ever. Bring on GTA and 2.0. I’m here to stay.
Id rather update then play some stupid little mods id rather play GTA and besides i have 2 psps

In other words, this is not a codec issue. (proven by people who have put the music/videos into other iso’s and report them working fine)
Also it is being reported that version changers do NOT work (for running the game off UMD). You must actually update your firmware to 2.0 (not 2.01)

those of you who say the 2.0 prx files are encrypted differently – this is true. However, the encryption has been broken and this is documented.
I’m sure that Humma just needs to update umd emulator to correctly decrypt the 2.0 prx files on 1.5 firmware and we’ll be set. Just hold your horses.
Um I am pretty sure sony will be implementing this on all new releases in future games. I know soon someone will find a way around it. I love rockstar and will be buying the game, never would I use an ISO of it. I for sure will not be upgrading and downgrading all the time. I think it’s time to get a second PSP for all the new stuff and I will keep my 1.50 for homebrew and older stuff and ones that have been cracked. 2 prob cool, be fun to play multi, does both PSP’s have to have same firmware? to play multi.

Isn’t it possible to create a virtual PSP on the MS, which has the 2.0 firmware? You know, like dump it from a 2.0 PSP… And then just let LCS play, using the required “code-reader” directly from the MS.
Or visa versa with a 1.5 firmware on the MS and 2.0 on the PSP. So if you want to play homebrew (emulators etc.) you need to do it on the MS. Like the Daemon Tools with the virtual cd-drives.

yeah, honestly, i would rather have homebrew because i have lumines and ridge racer on my mem stick, not to mention another mem stick full of apps, emulators (SNES, NES, GBC, SEGA), Drum machines, Paint, Internet Browser (that i can’t set up my network for yet, :p) all sorts of shit on there, now….. instead of playing GTA, i can play ANY old school game i want, i know it may sound retarded, but i spent 300 bucks (PSP & Mem Stick) just to play nintendo. i think sony should just let hackers do what they want, it’s our system!!!! I think people are just more concerened about playing GTA off the memory stick as an iso for two reasons
1. faster load time
2. Dont have to pay for the game
I’d love to see a patch that allows GTA to be played on 1.5, but for now upgrading and downgrading is a fair solution. But like i said before, alot of people dont like this idea because that still means they have to actually pay for the game… which is consequently the main reason sony keeps churning out new firmware.

Homebrew is what has kepted the PSP actually useful. GTA is really the only meaningful game I’ve been looking forward to. Its a choice now homebrew or GTA? Knowning I can downgrade back is worth getting the game. Buy the game and support Rockstar!!!!
# 116, its not really a choice between hombrew or GTA, its a matter of patience. If you wait long enough, chances are a patch will come out to solve this problem. The problem is alot of people in the homebrew scene are use to everything being easily accessiable and quickly solved. Their are some fine people working on a solution, but unfortunatly the ETA for GTA is, patience.

Wow, this is the first time psp-hacks got it WRONG. The prx’s are encrypted (which isn’t normally a problem) but they are using a new key. Once this key is decoded, we will have gta on 1.5.

You CAN play SNES games, Gameboy games, megadrive games, C64 games on 2.0. I’ve tried them all. Not sure about other ones like NeoGeo, or GBA, but the emulators I care most about work. PSPUAE does not work. But again people, Homebrew is happening on 2.0. Upgrade to 2.0 and try for yourself. The 0.7 eboot loader is allowing this now. I’ll try more emulators and see if they work as well, but I’m totally thrilled with 2.0 and the old skool games I’m playing. There will be of course games that will not work with 2.0 that work with 1.5, but quite a few are perfect with 2.0 and the 0.7 eboot loader.

I got it to work. First, I plugged the PSP into the wall 3 times, then I removed the memory stick, immersed it in a bucket of hot water for 30 seconds, put the UMD in the microwave, urinated on the joystick, and smoked 3 rocks of crack. Poof! GTA played perfectly on 1.5 So, all you lamers out there who are bitching about fixes and downloading crap, screw you. You don’t even need internet access to make the shizzle run on your PSPizzle.

it’s all about marketting, they probably planned the time it will take to crack and all that. They will get people to buy the psp for gta, then after a few weeks, someone will crack it to let more people buy psp to play it cracked. Sony makes its money from console, if homebrew and umdloader works it’s at their advantage. The fact that ppl break their psp trying thing is also part of the deal as they must buy another console. Eventually everything is possible, they know that and they are going to exploit that for profit. Just wait and see

Seriously folks, how lazy are all of you? Just update to 2.0 to play the real version of GTA then downgrade back to 1.5 when you are done or get tired of the game. I cannot believe how much bitching there is here when you have the ability to do both. Christ, half of you probably have a grand worth of ISO images on your PC right now anyways so pay the damn 50 bucks for the game and shut the hell up already.

#158 There has not been any reliable information on the procedure damaging any part of the PSP. Between 6 PSPs in our offices we have moved back and forth between 1.5 and 2.0 at least a couple of hudred times already and have not seen one single problem among them.
159 i confirm that, i’ve actually done it only about 25 times for personal use and the web browser (wich is by the way awesome, the one by psp-crazy is pure bullshit compared to that) and i do not experience any problemes. I’n fact the problem stated about blank screen on upgrade was fixed after downgrading from 2.0 to 1.5. If you wanna buy another psp, go ahead, Sony will be pleased anyway.
well lets see… i can play about a hundred games right now with my 1.5 or upgrade to 2.0 so i can play gta….uh, yeah, im staying 1.5 and i will not lose any sleep in doing so.

PLEASE can I update my JAP PSP (1.50) with 2.0 update placed on GTA UMD? Is it real 2.0 or SONY changed that 2.0 on GTA UMD to fix the hole for Homebrew (I want way to go back to 1.50)? I managed to create iso loader using tiff overflow method in 2.0 firmware. But it loads only small iso’s created by me. I will keep you posted on mu progress.

Um, I upgraded using the GTA UMD from 1.5 to 2.0 and then I spent half the night putting on the homebrew that would work. It all runs fine, except Lua scripts will not run at all no matter what. All of the SNES games work great with the supported emulator, but everything else is a piece of smelly dead hobo ass. So, if you are going to upgrade, just realize that all you will really have from now on is SNES games. I am a little miffed about having to downgrade, but come on guys, it’s only a matter of time before the system gets cracked again.

I upgraded to 2.0 to play GTA and I’m ready to downgrade back , the game is great but not being able to play all my iso files and emus sucks , I guess I’ll downgrade and wait for a crack to finish the game.
Hey I just think if you guys don’t wanna update then just buy another psp. Thats what I am going to do. You were able to buy one before so buy another one. Plus every game that comes out is going to have this 2.0 thing on it or higher and I don’t want to run the risk of messing up my psp long term. So I think it is cheaper to buy another one. i say dont worry about it. play other games and give it some time. Give it one week and the 1.2 gig iso will be ripped down to 800meg…another week and it will be playable on 1.50

Did I just waste £300?? I recently purchased a 1.50 PSP with a 2gb Sandisk pro mem stick. I am a student and cannot afford to be paying the ridiculous price of £40 per game, and so now I am wondering will I be able to play future iso files of games which will rrequire 2.0. Will there ever be a way round this!?

Oh your PSP is bricked ? Well, $ony doesn’t assure the guarantee for a bricked PSP so you can dismount it and re-use / sell the internal components :p . But if anyone have another better idea …
you can fix your psp by buying a new motherboard for it. (that is if the problem is a bad flash)
if the screen is black but all the buttons work its bricked but I think there is a way around that but its gonna be a big pain in the butt what you need to do is reset the system settings or even better update your psp to 2.0 but doing it blind will be the BIG problem
if you have sound turn it up full blast so at least your not def too. if you still need help let post it and ill try to walk you through it as soon as possible sorry im too busy for a complete walkthrough for now but ill post it tonight
So the iso loader for 1.5 can’t run the Gta because the firmware kernel thingy doesnt have this avc codec movie stuff + the kernalthingy doesnt have the proper stuff to run GTA? So version changer wont work either…..jeez.
#205 if you have to change the motherboard be careful, i bricked my psp a few weeks ago and put in a new board. the screws are very hard to get out in somecases because they are machine tightened. i had to leave 3 screws out. and then when i put it back together i had to take it back apart to fix the umd(didnt hook it back up to the motherboard right), while doing this a sliced my thumb open on the mount for the screen(there will be a post going round soon with a pic, titled “when psp’s attack!” for thoose that want to see). and whats worse is i have to open it up again because theres dust on the inside of the screen.
just make sure you have a good set of walkthrough instructions with lots of pics and an antistatic wrist strap.
if you need to get the board go to xboxrepair thats where i got mine!

you guys are making too much fuss about gta and v2.0. here is what i do. when i want to play gta i upgrade to 2.0, which takes about 1 min. then i downgrade back to 1.5 when i want to play iso or homebrew games. i’ve done this every single day since i bought gta and my psp still works perfect, no worries, i get homebrew, iso’s and gta. problem solved.
219, you need the latest fastloader. UMD Emulator will not work to play star wars.

It sounds to me the sensible choice would have been not spending your money on something as frivilous as a PSP.
As for the annoying “1.5 sucks upgrading is cool” notes;
if these games are indeed becoming much better, they may be right. Some of these first generation games are pretty crappy. With newer titles, the difference may be like comparing PS1 titles to that of the PS2.
I’d pick owning a few bought PS2 games over a huge library of free PS1 games anyday.
