Why the animosity towards homebrew? Havent you ever had the itch to put down the crappy games like Coded Arms or Need for Speeed and play some Mario, Excitebike, or even Super Metroid?

Homebrew/Hacks gives your PSP great flexibility and a wider range of games that you can play…even if they are Nintendo or SNES.

Upgrading your firmware has bricked a few systems before, I recall. Sony posted an upgrade that wasnt ready…the 2.0 as we know it bricked a few systems and SONY did not want to pay for the repairs!

Homebrew is the best thing that has happened to the PSP as of right now most of the games are crap.

I think that sony is da best electronics company, and its impossible to fight against hackers, becouse, there needs to be aviability to run Eboot.pbp to upgrade, but what hackers does is - they code the same thing in images. Images are aviable function on psp, and nobody wants to block it. And anyway why hackers couldnt’t make same pbp’s as sony?

I think whoever wants to upgrade, more power to them. I downgraded my PSP from 2.0, yet I enjoyed the built-in browser and the other little features it added. And I think those who wish to brew, go for it! We’re all gamers here, or we wouldn’t have the most powerful handheld on the market. Those upgraders are necessary, because if they don’t, how will the brewers know about what exploits can be created or what functions can be generated as homebrew for 1.5? I don’t use my PSP to browse the web, but it was a neat thing to use to start a conversation at work or while out and about. So, I feel if you want to upgrade, do it. If you don’t want to, don’t. It’s your system, and unless you intentionally fuck it up or break it, no one’s an ass either way.

I think the whole upgrade thing is all crap … the only cool thing about upgrading is the x.00 updates because they actually meen something big,like in 2.00 the web browser was put in. In the meantime ill just steal my brothers PsP for the updates.

The way I se it, the more the psp becomes like a mini computer the greater of a chance we have to get a virus. I know this may sound like a long shot, but i think in the near future sony is gnna have some people distribute viruses for the psp, so it would scare others and push them to update from homebrew. A piece of hardware is only as good as the software developed for it. I think the PSP is a sleeping giant and I’m sure one day, Sony will release the software that will make it tremendous, until then, I’m sticking with what other people have come up with.

O.K. Im not going to insult ANYBODY im just going to tell it like it is. I have 200 NES roms, 135 SNES roms, 100 Genesis roms, Turbo GX 16, GBC and the wonderful Neo Geo CD roms all working on PSP. Why would I upgrade my firmware if I dont even own a wireless connnection at home and own a Treo 650 with internet access for when I leave the house? Exactly, there’s no reason to. I love my homebrew with hundreds of games with practicly no load time. For those of you who are thinking about installing homebrew with 1.5 but are concerned about “bricking” your PSP. There is a program called PSafeP which you can use to scan the .PBP file (PSP’s executable file) for malicious code. I e-mailed Sony about the homebrew scene and asked them how can we continue to support Sony if Sony does not continue to embrace the homebrew scene. I understand they want to make money off their games but the big point I made on behalf of OUR community was that we would not buy or support games that would potentialy force us to upgrade from our 1.5 firmware. I made this VERY clear to Sony and that they should take that into careful consideration when making future games. Any thoughts about this?

Personally I will not upgrade my PSP until a working hack comes out that will allow homebrew to run on anything past 1.5. Once someone comes out with a hack for 2.0 I will upgrade to it, and ditto for 2.01. Sure you can spend 400 bucks on a Location Free Kit. (Which you need if you want to watch TV on your PSP; just updating will not allow you to watch TV on your PSP) but I’ll make do without that feauture for now. If that is the main reason you got your PSP, then power to you, go ahead and upgrade. For me I enjoy playing around with homebrew development. It helps me improve my coding skills. There’s no need to slag anyone on either side of the fence.

The virus issue is irrelevant. You can just as easily pick up a virus using your PSP web browser once they open up more scripts with future firmware upgrades. As people above had said you can scan your files for malicious code before sticking them on your memory stick. For all we know Sony may be resposible for the virus.

I am hearing rumors going around that SONY is currently creating a program that they will send via satellite that our PSP will detect. They say that this program is designed to activate the WLAN feature even with it turned off and force it to download update 2.50 and install it and it will lock you out of the PSP untill the upgrade is complete. Lock you out means you won’t be able to turn the PSP off and if you remove the battery, it will just continue when you turn the PSP back on.

i found out how to have 2.5, and still run homebrew. What you do is use the version changer and put it to version 2.01, then update, it worked for me, but if anything happens to you if you try, do it at your own risk. i have recked one psp with this, but a few others did work.
