yesterday when i came home from school i found my psp was upgraded back to 2.0 thank god it was 2.0. so any way i went to download the mph downgrader and my norton kept deletin the tif file because supposebly it was a virus. i dint want to brick my psp so i didnt downgrade but this mornin i woke up and i said fuck it. i downgrade bak to 1.5 usin mph and it didnt brick my psp and now im enjoying homebrew again

You aren’t 1.0, you’re 1.5. The downgrader tricks your PSP into thinking that it has firmware 1.0 installed in order to downgrade it to 1.5.

Why does KXploit replace a system DLL in the system32 directory? At least it tried to on my XP box (I skipped the overwrite).

Of corse norton is going to detect all this stuff as a virus now. For the longest time Symantic was saying nmap was a virus, netcat was a virus, and so forth. I use AVG-Antivirus and have had no problems like that. Its corporate bullshit, sony probably gave them some big amount of money to try and scare people. Heh, wouldn’t be supprised if they have something to do with the orgional virus as well. Because after all, its the american way!

My Norton was saying the file overflow.tif was a virus too, after reading around a few forums I found noone that would say if it would still work even if Norton said, it was a virus. well here it is, I got my file from psphacks, I turned off my virus scaner and ran it on my psp like the read me said. AND IT WORKS. as long as u get the file from a good source dont worry about the virus warning. now u have some real info on this BS-virus. ur welcome everyone.

Theres nothing wrong with the downgrader, My psp has been acting a little strange as well, but i never downgraded(got my PSP when they where 1.50’s). Could be the Homebrew your using. Im going to try getting rid of a few Homebrews i dont use any more…

Thats very odd, I didn’t even need to use the Backround.png for the downgrader to work.

And yes, Just incase any of you are wondering. The Psp tricks itself into thinking it’s version 1.0 with the downgrade. When you turn it off and restart the system you can run the 1.5 upgrader. So basicly you do:

Norton did a scan friday and said it found that overflow.tif was the Trojan.PSPBrick which is BS because I used those exact overflow.tif files on my buddies PSP and took him from 1.51->2.0>1.5. This is just Sony’s way of trying to stop the scene.

I’ve successfully downgraded to 1.5 and can honestly say it’s the best thing you can do to your psp if you’re into programming that is. The next step for you then would be to install the ftpd program on your psp so you can ftp tp your psp using the one supplied by windows or linux over wifi.

then download the psptoolchain and start making games!

ok look heres some background info for the noobs, misinformed, and impatient. there are 2 kinds of downgraders. one kind turns your psp to a brick, the other actually downgrades. they both use a file named overflow.tif. its a fake image file that actually contains data. when accessed it causes a buffer overflow which allows for code to be executed. one group of people decided to use code that overwrote the flash rom on your psp with garbage data which makes it impossible to start. the other group used the flash rom from a 1.5 PSP to flash the psp to a working 1.5 state. norton identifies the file “overflow.tif” as a virus because the version that “bricks” your psp contains the same filename as the version that legitimately downgrades you. Its simply a mix-up based on filename and data. another note: basically any file that causes a buffer overflow is considered a virus, regardless of whether or not its good. Take the microsoft sasser (lsass.exe) exploit for example… One author of a variant actually used the vulnerability to run the patch on the infected system, making it invulneravle to further infection, yet virus companies still listed this helpful action as a virus. its the same idea here.

I downgraded my PSP. Really funny story. I first downloaded the PSP hack ( downgrader) ran it and then turn it off, rebootet, did everything right… but then the PSP went black while hearing to musik. hehe. i bought my PSP with firmware version 2.50, which annoys me.
i actually smeared some glue over the lens(pritt stick) and got a refund when i said i upgraded to 2.5 and that it wouldn’t run GTA.
they replaced gta, but when that failed too they had it downgraded
to 2.0 (dont ask how) and the problem persisted. they gave me a new psp, i asked to keep the “broken” psp as a toy for my baby sister, and simply removed the glue(not simply, actually).
the point is, i got 2, and im wondering if i should risk one. the new one is 2.60, btw

What I think it is right now is just something that doesn’t actually change the firmware, but gives you the benefits of another firmware. Ok, this is for all of you who have reservations about downgrading your firmware. First, this process is risky, no matter how you look at it. If you do it wrong, it will brick your system. If you do it right, it works great. If you don’t know whether or not you should, odds are you probably will have trouble downgrading the system, and may even brick it, so don’t bother risking it. Second, for those of you who ask, “Should I try to downgrade my system? I’ve heard some say it messes you up….” blah blah blah. Well, the best advice I can give you is read what’s already written, because the same people who called foul and the same people who can’t say enough good things are going to keep calling foul and keep saying good things. God is not going to post the final answer on whether or not this is good for your PSP. Make up your own damn mind based on what you read. Personally I see the smart people saying this worked, and the little kids who just discovered the swear word as thier new toy are the ones who can’t make it work. Makes a guy think, huh?

o yea btw the virus name is Trojan.PSPBrick (and the file DOES contain it)16.6 KB(size)it affects 1 of the major files on your psp by deleting it. It ‘floods’ your psp through your PHOTO section.

First of all, just to set the record straight, this is a virus. It is a buffer overflow virus designed specifically to crash your firmware. Now, that being said, if you read the instructions and follow them, after the virus crashes the Firmware, the system will have a corrupt “firmware version” and thus allows you to upgrade to 1.5. Since it still does have 2.0 data on there the install of 1.5 fails at 99% and you have to reboot. Rebooting erases all the firmware data and reloads, from scratch, the 1.5 data. That is why you can downgrade from 2.0, because a virus very carefully destroys certain parts of the firmware. So YES, it’s a virus, YES it’s harmful, and YES it works if you read the fucking instructions. Do NOT do this if you are one of those that posts saying “Well I dunno, you sure it won’t break my game” because you will rush through and read “only the important parts” and skip a minor detail and shell out for a new PSP.

Also, as a sidenote, you can downgrade as many times as you want, as long as you remove all the extra data the downgrade puts onto your memory card. There should only be two folders and no files in the root of the memory card when you first start. I’ve downgraded 5 times now and haven’t had a problem.

to those who dont know how to disable nortan anti-virus…. there should be an icon at the……. bottom of the screen… right click and click on…. disable.

i did Excatly wat the instrutions told me but i ran the overflow the system automatically turned off i then turned it back on and went to the system update and clicked start….it then told me that it was v. 2.0 there is no need to update………wat the hell should i do?!

Just to reassure every one. I just downgraded my psp and it worked great as long as you follow the instructions carefully. Don’t get fooled by the idiots on this site that say this doesn’t work.

I’m not sure about downgrading, but after reading this whole page, I’m pretty sure I’m gonna do it. I am going to follow those instructions letter by damn letter though! I don’t have the money to buy legal PSP games anyways … =)

I had to disable Symantic, if anybody disabled Norton and it’s still gone. BTW, I’m in the middle of downgrading and I go into Photo on my PSP, choose Memory Stick, and, instead of letting me scroll down to hover on overflow.tif it just freezes, and shuts off after about five seconds. What am I doing wrong/what should I do? Please help!

NVM, I had to COMPLETELY disable Norton/Symantic in Computer Management.

For anyone who is wondering, my PSP works fine now on 1.5 – this is not a virus. How ever, do not get the fucked version, as it bricks your PSP. Make sure you download from PSP Hacks!

Norton says its a trojan because it is a trojan, so if you wanna brick your psp go ahead and download that MPH file.

So when the trojan brick virus is detected by norton after unzipping MPH downgrader u just ignore it? I will shit myself if this thing bricks my psp!

Disabling the anti-virus software on your poota means the overflow will be able to be copied to your psp…simle as that. But after doing all this, i also am having the same problem as a few others here – that when you go to PHOTO and try to open it, the psp freezes, and switches itself off. Can ANYONE please post an answer tho this problem??? Someone somewhere must know the answer….?! *HELP!*
