PSP Anti Virus Already?

Alias420 | October 4, 2005

Well in the wake of a recent piece of homebrew ruining PSP’s Dark Killer has released the first Sony PSP anti virus program. While it is no Norton yet it is a very good first step.

PSafeP is a windows tool to scan Sony PSP executable (EBOOT.PBP) files for suspicious code.

Important Note: Due to PSafeP scanning for any and all access to the flash memory, some legitimate software (ex: LUA Player, PSPInside) that accesses flash0 to load certain prx modules will fail the scan even though they are 100% percent safe.

OMG All i do is leave my psp in the usb mode and restart my computer and when i go back to the umd drive on my computer and on the directory of the psp there is an extra file that says that there have been some suspicous files found on my psp and it says they have been deleted. This also works on corrupted files on your psp and i found this be accedent because i forgot to take my psp out of usb mode when i shut down my computer and don’t start bitching to me when nothing happens when you look in your psp directory because it just means that there are no viruses on your psp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :) ;)

This thing is good and helps on some thigns, butmy suggestion is dont patch yuor firmware… if u do, its gonna stop homebrew or brick you obviously. Us ehtis on soem apps, but watch out cuz things like LUA Player games will be detected by tis as a threat cuz it accesses the flash to read soem .prx files, but are still safe. Also, file assistant cuz it loads your background from flash and others. So REALLY, just download form reliable sources and make SURE that soemone has stated it works rpoperly.

Aren’t you glad I didnt say “Woot! First post!”? oops, i just did… :P

It looks for programs that make certain function calls and try to access certain areas of the PSP. But like the warning says some legit programs use these functions and will set off a flag.

I’ve always worried about the possibility of maliciously coded PSP applications… Hopefully that PSP bricking “virus” (as some seem to call it) will be the last one…

Its just sick that now we have to worry about people making things like that.Sick freaks.

I don’t know about all of you guys, but I always do a virus scan before I open these RAR. files. Whether this helps or not, I have no idea :P…lol. But, I haven’t had anything bad happen yet. Props to the one that made this though, and eternity in the seventh circle of hell for the guy who made the virus ;) >:)

Do you ever stop to wonder if the person who wrote the first malicious PSP EBoot was someone from Sony? It is their device, and the legality of it is, we are running unsigned code, which voids the license agreement. So technically, IF Sony wanted to, they could write code for our Homebrew running PSP’s to render them useless. BUT, then they would have to write unsigned code, which technically they legally should not be doing also. Those are my random thoughts for the day.

if i remeber correctly i predicted this when the first homebrew browser came out, and some called me stupid cause “who would want to write a virus for the psp” just wait until norton anti-virus 2006 PSP edition comes out lol

psp viruses dont suprise me, there are alot of assholes in the world

#27: You sir take the dumb ass award…think about it, the coding for the psp is NOT the same as code for the PC. PC = x86 programming, PSP = MIPS programming. You can program in C on the PSP but guess what, you need LUA as the frontend for it.

If it was, then why the fuck don’t we just get old games like Lost Vikings or the classic Leisure Suit Larry, put it in a zip and play it? Because it’s not the same.

Comment by Bobdobalina

28: wtf you smoking, if you can program a virus in C and load it using lua…wouldn’t that change it to code that the PSP understands and therefore execute it? Retar…

Indeed the comments are very noob based. This is also how the psp-hacks.net site is as well. I for one have cut that site from reading due to the idiotic people who are too retarded to read and search and for the very lack luster of news being reported.

I suppose it was pretty obvious that malicious EBOOTs would appear…example - I had a v1.00 PSP and wanted to go to v1.50. I asked for help from another person on the forum and it went great, but thought it wouldn’t belong before the malicious f**kwits who get kicks from this kind of behaviour appeared. And then there’s Sony. They are obviously seething about piracy and homebrew, and they would certainly know how do spaz-out a PSP fo’ sho’, and that’s the shiznit (er, sorry, I lapsed in to G speak there for a minute homiez).

There’s a game I got( can’t remember where at the moment)called south park robotron(sprobotron)that accesses the flash drive. I used this PSafeP program and it red flagged :-S. I don’t know if it was coincidence or not, but after I deleted it from my psp I couldn’t get internet for a short while. Hope this helps you all out :) .

40, 41: Wow, you guys swear on my computer 24/7 or something. That info I read on a couple psp hacking sites. I’m just passing down the information to you unread folk.

Go ahead then and play some zipped games on your PSP, just don’t come crying asking “wtf, why won’t my computer games on my psp!”. You will now know the answer yourselves.

I though what number 28 was talking about was common knowladge. Anti virus programs usualy just search for executable files that can be ran in windows or other operating systems. The anti virus program wont recognise .PBP files. as for 40 and 41, look at yourself, if anything you look like more of an idiot now posting a bunch of hatefull spam. If you want to raise your self-esteem and call me a nerd, go for it. I’m not ashamed for going to college or learning more about a subject because I wanted to improve myself further.

As for the anti virus, I think its great that we have some of way to check a .pbp file from all those people who try and release bogous versions of emulators and other programs.
