Scrolling Starfield - First Graphical Demo for v2.0

greg | September 25, 2005

This should’ve been posted sooner; however, I was out of town. No less, Andy Fung emailed me this - the first graphical demo for the v2.0 firmware.

How to use:

  1. Place ‘h.bin’ in the root of your memory stick - i.e.) x:\h.bin
  2. Set wallpaper to frame_buffer.png (without overflow.tif present in the PHOTO directory, or it will crash).
  3. Add overflow.tif to the PHOTO directory, and open into the photo

Download Starfield 2.0 Graphical Demo

The source is also included for other developers .

Keep checking back for further 2.0 news!

WiFi Jukebox v0.01 and PSPRadio v0.31b

Gary13579 | September 25, 2005

Streaming is the new cool thing, because how are we going to fit both PSP games and music on our memory stick :)
Not to worry though, as there are now two good programs to stream music to your PSP.

First, there was an update to PSPRadio, v0.31b.

What’s new:

0.31b
-Corrected problem when PLAYLIST not defined in config file.
-Disabled feature to go to next song in list for now.

-Added support for comments. Use ‘;’ as the first character. (Blank lines are also ignored)
-Now urls with no path work (http://64.202.98.193:8000 didn’t work, but http://64.202.98.193:8000/ did. Now both do).
-Now asking the server to send metadata.
-Metadata information is displayed for the current stream.
-Added a logging library
-Integrated logging with everything (framework, app, config)
-Added an event system
-Integrated the event system. This will be useful when the gui is developed.
-When a stream finishes, it goes on to the next on the playlist
-Fixed problem where the last entry in the playlist was getting inserted twice into the list.
-Having trouble getting the threads to log anything..

It’s too late now.. and I’m tired, so I’ll get the logging fixed for the next release..

Raf.

This is a program that will stream from a shoutcast server onto your PSP. This means you can use tons and tons of online radio stations.
Download the newest version here.

There is also a new streaming program, called WiFi Jukebox.
This program does not use shoutcast servers, but instead has it’s own server including in the rar.
Install and run the server on your computer, type in the root folder of your music, then start up the program on your PSP. It will ask you to select a static IP profile (must be static!) to use.
After you select one, you will need to add the IP of your server.
A lot of people already know this, but half the comments would be saying “OMG IT DOSEN’T WORK” if I didn’t go over it.
To get the IP of the server, go to the computer you ran the server program on.
Hit Start > Run > cmd
Type in ipconfig
You should see IP Address . . . . . . . . . . . . Your IP here

After that it should download the song list and display it. Choose the order of songs you want in your playlist and then continue on to the player.
It will stream the first one, then play it, and stream the next one. Hit R trigger to move on to the next song.
Download WiFi Jukebox here.

Awesome programs :D

PSP v2.0 Hello World!

greg | September 24, 2005

Update: And here’s the source code!

toc2rta free development network have done it again - one step closer to full homebrew on the 2.0!

I was just sent this binary from toc2rta.

Pure binary loader.

* it’s loaded at 0×08810000
* it’s max 64 kB
* it’s pure binary MIPS code
* you have to use syscalls and not NIDs
* it runs in user space!
* it’s called h.bin (Hello world) in the root of the MemoryStick

Set the frame_buffer.png as background like before and Place the new overflow.tif in the photos dir and the h.bin on the memory stick. It loads ms0:/h.bin

Join us on irc.toc2rta.com

Download ‘Hello World’ for v2.0

So mad props to toc2rta for this - looking forward to what the future brings!

PSPRadio v0.2 and PSP firmware 2.0 .bin launcher

Gary13579 | September 24, 2005

With all this 2.0 stuff going on right now, I don’t think many people relized there is a new version of this awesome program (I for one didn’t see it).
Raf writes

Hey, everyone,

-Corrected problem where the app froze when exiting while paused/stopped.
(was caused because threads where suspended/asleep)
-Now can play lower samplerate streams (22K, 11K, etc) let me know well this works, since I only tried it with one at 22KHz.
-Integrated socket header files from NetBSD.
-Socket recv and send timeout set to 3 seconds.
-Corrected problems with httpget that would cause the decoding thread to freeze if the connection failed.
-Preliminary playlist support (version 1). Use the shoulder buttons L (prev) and R (next) to navigate the list.
** This is still work in progress ** Don’t expect this version to be perfect, it’s just an enhanced 0.1 **
-Please direct comments and suggestions to http://rafpsp.blogspot.com/

Thanks everyone!

Raf.

Download there here.

Another breakthrough in the 2.0 cracking, they have gotten a .bin file to execute. This isn’t the same as the last post, trust me ;)
What this .bin file does is turn the screen blue (can’t you just see the applications?).
Put the file h.bin in the root directory of your memory card, and do the rest like the post below this one.
If you do it right, it should turn your screen blue.

Please remember that this is NOT a homebrew launcher. Currently, you CANNOT use this to play games. However, the chances of that happening are looking really good.
Download it here.

2.0 Exploited

Alias420 | September 23, 2005

Update: This proof of concept has now been confirmed as a working exploit for the 2.0 firmware. Now we have to wait until some more useful code using this exploit is released :) Remember who had it first PSP-Hacks.com

We just received a very convincing email claiming to have hacked the 2.0 firmware. We do not currently have a 2.0 PSP accessible right now. So we would like our members to try it out and let us know how it goes. We’ve been hearing rants for a while about no 2.0 news so here is a chance to not just complain but actually help out and let us know if it works.

First Homebrew Code on 2.00

—————————–

1. Set wallpaper to frame_buffer.png (without overflow.tif present

in the PHOTO directory, or it will crash).

2. Add overflow.tif to the PHOTO directory, and open into the photo

viewer. Custom code to paint the screen! Or to write a homebrew

app! Not to run illegal games.

How It Works?

—————

1. The PNG contains a small amount of code in a known, fixed place

(the VRAM). If to look closely at the wallpaper, sees small

coloured pixels in the right down. The pixels are Allegrex

opcodes, with the highest byte all zero for the ALPHA. These

pixels do:

syscall 0×20C7 ; sceKernelDcacheWritebackInvalidateAll

slt a0, zero, sp ; put 1 into a0

sll a0, a0, 6 ; put 64 into a0

addiu a0, sp, a0 ; get screen painter address over SP

jr a0 ; jump to the screen painter

nop ; branch delay slot

2. The TIFF contains also some code and a buffer to trigger the

known BitsPerSample overflow in libtiff in the photo viewer.

The buffer makes a jump to the VRAM which has the PNG colours

by overwriting the safed ra (return address) on the stack.

The VRAM code uses SP and calculates the address of the buffer

then runs it. Then it jumps there. The screen is yellow as

the colour was 0×12345678 in Hex.

PSP Users:

We didn’t do this so you could steal from Sony and game companies.

We believe in OSS. There are plenty of amazing programs that have

been written for the PSP. Use this as a gift and not as an excuse

to steal.

Sony:

If you wanted to find us i know you could. This release wasn’t

intended as a way to run pirated software on the PSP. We believe

that everyone should be able to compile their own code and run it.

Nothing is kept secret forever and i’m sure you know this.

In the end, if it wasn’t us. It would be some one else.

Fighting it would be like skating up a hill. You did create the

PSP and did an amazing job.

Toc2rta:

To the people of the Toc2rta development network. You’re our phone

a friend. With out your friendship this would never of happened.

I hope this brings you as much happiness as it brings us.

Join us on irc.toc2rta.com.

Most importantly… Have fun!

PSP Hombrew goes commercial

Gary13579 | September 21, 2005

Recently a few homebrew authors have been playing around with the idea of releasing their programs on a UMD.

The ones I know of so far are PSP Advance and PSP Kick.
On the PSP Advanced site, it has a link to preorder the UMD, and has a list of features that it will contain, including audio/video streaming and P2P networks.
I would personally buy this if it really does contain these things, as I have waited forever for a homebrew app that would do this.

I am not sure if PSP Kick has said anything on their site (it appears down to me), but on EFnet #pspupdates, FKR has announced that he was approached with the idea of releasing PSP Kick on a UMD.
He sounded very convincing, however, that there would still be a free version availible for all the homebrew users. Whether or not Sony will stand for this, we shall see (this could be a despirate attempt to kill off good homebrew programs).

If you know of any more programs that may be released on a UMD, please comment in this topic, and try to include a link

Create games for legal 2.0 PSP’s!

greg | September 20, 2005

Adventure Maker (Free Edition) has just added support for the Sony PSP! This makes it the ONLY toolkit available for creating amateur games for legal 2.0 PSP’s. No scripting or programming is required to create a game, and NO hack is required to play the produced games! Games are executed through the 2.0 web browser!

You can download Adventure Maker (Freeware - No registration required) from the official website: http://www.adventuremaker.com

What you can create for the Sony PSP is:
- Static first-person adventure games
- Myst/Riven-like games
- Quiz games
- Educational software
- Interactive visits
- Tour guides (museums, sites…)
- Interactive presentations and brochures
- Interactive comic books…

..and any other static point-and-click software.

The concept is very simple: you import your pictures (photos, drawings, renderings…), you add hotspots to link them to one another, and you are done! You can even create complex puzzles without any scripting: just create some variables,
and then make the hotspots or pictures appear or disappear depending on the value of those variables.

To see an example of what you can achieve without any scripting, make sure to try out the sample game (created and compiled with Adventure Maker FREE Edition), available at the following URL: http://www.adventuremaker.com/games_for_portable.htm

For more information, downloads, and tutorials are available on the official website.
