First Playable 2.0 Homebrew Game!
greg | September 26, 2005
sousuke has released the first playable homebrew game for the PSP 2.0 - Pong!
- download the file (psp01.tif)
- put it in the PHOTO folder (you just need this one file - no background - nothing else).
- start it by pressing X on US PSPs (O on JP PSPs) on the PHOTO icon. Don’t press Start or slideshow (It will just freeze and shutdown).
- if you want to shutdown, you have to hold the power switch for ~10 seconds (you don’t have to take the battery out).
Controls:
- Dpad Up and Down: Controls left paddle up and down
- Cross and Triangle: Moves right paddle up and down
Enjoy!

IT CAME IT CAME!! super happy fun time
wooooooooo im comment # 2!! GJ it’s all downhill from heeeeeeeeeeeeere
Hell yeah!! Im still not going to upgrade till Fastloader comes out.
one step closer the the edge, that im about to break!
OMFG that is so cool!!!!
Pong was never so fun =)
It just hangs up on me.
yeah pong kinda sucks but owell its a playable game so you 2.0oiners enjoy i am going to be here with my 1.50 playing death jr thw hwole night see ya people tommorow maybe the homebre will comout tommorow
Once we have Emulators for 2.0 ill be a happy person, but this is a very good start, i downloaded and everything works good on it!! cheers!! ;]
Kinda makes me wish the 1.5′ers couldnt upgrade because of the shit they put the 2.0′ers through just because they chose to upgrade.
errr #8, pong is homebrew, just because u cant run emulaters and rom doesnt mean its not homebrew. I swear im starting to get fed up with people whos only extent to homebrew is emulaters and roms =/
o well great job on peeps who made this =)
Can confirm it does work on my NZ 2.0 and about holding power for 10 secs to turn off it takes a bit more then 10 secs more like 20.
Finally something to amuse me…
Great to see something on 2.0 Keep up the good work guys!
-TC
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking very good. Kind of hard and gets boring after a while but a very good start indeed. Its proceding way faster than I had hoped. Keep the goods coming sosouke
Best game of pong in my life ever. Amazing how it doesn’t need the background and .bin file. Best of all it doesn’t flicker!!!!
SHOULD I UPDATE MY PSP 1.5 TO PSP 2.0!!!!!
This is pretty tight. And to think the exploit came out on Friday and by Monday we are already playing homebrew on 2.0. The future looks very promising. Good job to all the coders on this.
to poster # 17 If you can live with out ur roms for a few weeks (probably a month tops) then yes upgrade to 2.0, theres a good chance we are going to see alot of apps on 2.0 verry soon.
i dont knw how to get it on my psp
i mainly play comercial games on my MS. SO NOW I AM GOING TO UPGRADE NOW!?!?
that totally deserves an
“M-azing” candy bar
from the way it sounds from you gMan, id wait, 2.0s future is promissing, but it seems some people are more patient then others, so you can just relax with 1.5 and when you see the apps you want for 2.0 then upgrade until then just relax some
listen #20 all u have to do s download da file and then place the file in Photo folder of your psp then go to the picture on ur psp and the game will start
Something is odd with it, I don’t need to get into it. It loads as soon as PSP tries to load the preview image (little icon) and the right paddle doesn’t work.
I have a JP PSP 2.0 with JP Firmware.
I will upgrade after all is redone (which will take some time). For now I am gonna sit back and enjoy some good ol fashion games and some new ones later on. I could care less for GTA or Madden (which is crashing peoples system). I am waiting for Armored core. When that comes out I will be siked. Hey aybe we will get a PS emu on this system. It does have the hardware to run it right? SOTN on the PSP would be awsome along w/ FF7 but guess that would be WAY WAY off in the future. I am glad to see a game running. The critics said “you will never get anything to run b/c of the 64kb limit” and “it can’t communicate with the kernel” and all that. Well looks like pong is running just fine ;). Critics -”can I have a nice warm glass of milk, it helps me go to sleep”
Crazy Oldfolks home worker - “how bout a nice warm glass of shut the hell up!!”
(from happy gilmore, hope that made you smile if you remember that)
I’m having problems also, my psp loads it auctomatically when there are no other pictures in the file but if there are it just freezes
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! ive waited so long for this!(3 days) but anyways, this is great, now to everyone who helped in making this, i thank you alot and i encourage you to make more games, this is very good, it shows a very bright future for psp 2.0 homebrew! thanx again to the creators of this version of pong
FOR PEOPLE WITH 1.52, I HAVE A HACK. RUNNING STRAIGH EBOOTS FILES.
pkman2k@hotmail.com
I will show you. add me on msn. Also dont update!
I can’t get the download ta come up from the web Site… What happen….
Pkman2k, id just wrather update, get all the new features that sony intended for it, and wait a week or so for Emulaters (since thats the only thing any one around here cares about) and have 2.0 and homebrew, people with the downgrading should be quite too, 2.0 has homebrew its here and theres nothing any one can do, just face it 1.5 is gnna be completly obsolete soon and I cant wait for that =)
pkman2k, send it in to PSP-hacks if its legit and they will post it. Send them proof and the files you used.
# 31 try right click and save as, some windows XP OS just shows you a picture and not the file, just right click and save as, put it in ur psp photos section and it should just fire right up. enjoy =)
lol, never, 1.5 and 1.0 will never be absolute. this new method you are loading pictures to run your game. 1.0, and 1.5 you are running an actually psp executable. what is supose to be ran. what you are running is a hacked up way of running homebrew games. I do belive tho, 1.0 and 2.0 homebrewers will have there own games out there. where its either for 1.0/1.5/1.52, or 2.0.
Yeah buddy!1!! No overflow needed or anything!!!
add me, and i will show you live. proof it works. there still problems. and it will be on later.
sousuke
thank you for your hard work, you’ve helped begin the process
My problem is I click on download pong for 2.0 and it just goes to a blank screen… and it says done is anybody else havein this problem…
well whatever helps you sleep at night, Im just gnna wait for for the 2.0 software to come threw (I’ve had and played homebrew on 1.0 and 1.5) and I like the 2.0 much better. Though it runs from picture files, it doesnt bother me much, I remeber when 1.5 was hacked no one liked it because they had to switch memory cards and 1.0 where all skeptics like 1.5 people are now. History repeats itself and 2.0 is gnna have some great stuff on it, so im just gnna stick with 2.0
lol #40, you have no clue what your talking about. they fix that bug 2 days later. now theres a software that loads 1.0 to 1.5 no swat. straight install. any people these days pre make them for 1.5 no swap. Like WTF? dont talk when you dont know whats going on. 1.5, you have 2 folder, Game and Game%. jesus christ, your pretty dump. or dont bother to look for updates. Youre just saying you like it better because you were an updated before you had a chance to play on 1.5.
1.0, 1.5 they both ran eboot files. 2.0 no eboot. very messed. its not like this is bad. this is great what they found, but is far from good as 1.5. Hell i wish i had a 1.0, so dont have to split my eboot files. 1.0 is the BEST!!!
Got it ta work… Sweet… It won’t be long now… Thanks this was about ta make me go crazy not havin homebrew.. This is a damn good start… Agree #42 wish I had 1.0….
Were getting somewhere now.
finnaly a little homebrew it aint much but he it’s a start. keep up the good work people.
it dont work you need a h.bin file.so any one who said it works is a git!!!!!
Hey you git there must be no pictures except for the tif file GIT!!!
#46 yes it does work. I don’t know how it works without a .bin file either… just drop the .tif in the photo bin and somehow it works. give it a shot. have fun playing pong with yourself.
#46 you need to get your ass straight Why would 40 people say it works and you dont.
oh ya NOOB!
#39 Right click the file -> save as and drop it in your psp photo folder!
if you put the psp01.tif into it’s own dir, for example, ‘Pong’, and put another picture in there that alphabetically is before ‘psp01′, you can navigate the photo menu without issue. once you enter the dir you created, the program runs automaticly.
DOWNGRADER FROM 2.0 TO 1.5 WORKING!
Okay, this is sweet, i am very close to setting up a Workable 2.0 to 1.5 Downgrader.
Just to let others know how it works, or others can try to attempt this.
This is not some fake bullshit method.
Step 1.
Recompile the Wab Firmware changer for the psp 2.0 using the tif to execute. Change firmware name to 1.0
Step 2.
Place in under the psp/games/updates dir a 1.50 update install.
It will think it is a firmware 1.00 and will install the 1.50 over it.
There you go a working downgrader!!
I am still getting the code to compile, and will be launching the code along with the downgrader tif file with it.
46. have you even tried it yet.. you dont need the h.bin or any background.. which is kewl coz i was getting sick of the black there.. even if it was only for a day.. Great work every1 else who made this work.. i mistakenly updated my 1.0 to 2.0 when i first got it.. without even looking to see if i would be able to play homebrew 8( so for me.. this is awesome
Reason i know this works. because i took my current 1.5 change name to 1.0 then reinstalled the 1.5. so should work same for 2.0
Hai Everyone,
question: Does it also work for the (EU)ropean version? Firmware 2.0
Can someone please let me know?
Greetz form the Netherlands
first itought, it does not work on may EU PSP, once pressed X on photo folder it definitely start to access memory stick, but after 6-7 seconds it shut down :( hmmm, i uplugged usb cable, still no succes, then i takeout umd disc, still nothing. one more power off and then, here it comes - IT RUNS!
Man, I’m just waiting for an exploit like before with the 1.0 and 1.5. Really hated when the swaploit came out and I didn’t have 2 ms. And does this go through the Games section or will you always have the Photos outlined when you play?
A down grader wouldnt be a bad thing so I could try out the 2.0 software and then convert back to my 1.5 version just for kicks. I know “who wants a downgrader when 2.0 is being exploited” but actually I do. I would like to try all the new 2.0 stuff but you can expect to wait for months before everythingis as sweet as 1.5 is right now. But it would be fun to upgrade then downgrade at will. Well anything is possible. I am very patient…..(goes back to doing Fluid Mechanics HW)
yeah pong…whats next pac man?…ohhhhh space invaders!!!
Why is it that people in the PSP scene complain so much? The devs don’t owe us anything, we should be gratefull they came as far as they did.
In 3 days from a “hello world” to a game with basic input is quick enough for me.
Thnx, Sousuke!
#59, Pac Man and Space Invaders are two pretty cool games.
Awesomeness. Something that actually lets me control it((even if I have to controll both sides)), just another step forward. Atleast THESE comments aren’t filled with pointless fights and rants((yet)).
Hmm unfrotunately it doesnt work for me:(
i placed the tif file in the photo directory.
Open the directory and bam freezes
whoops correction i had to hold X
it works now
great job guys
Interesting post by Sousuke (pong’s author) on QJ forums, he says that the 64k limit is just a rumour, it’s just the default amount overflow.tif loads which can be changed to load 1MB or more.
(Hope to be playing Doom on my 2.0 PSP within the week)
Hey 62, i just updated my 1.51 to 2.0 and i got the hello world to work but i got the same problem as u, bam freezes crap..any suggestions…?
nothin really that special on v2.0, i have it, i would rather have homebrew
i cant seem to dl the file. when u click on the link it bring u to another web page with a quick time logo “Q” and a question mark on it… wat is wrong??? can anyone pls help…
#67, right click on the file link and “save as”. Your browser is trying to play the file or something.
67. Right click on the file and save it.. or even easier just load up the URL on your psp and tell it to save in the photo folder 8)
Finally, there’s somthong for PSP version 2.0,i been waiting for so long, please keep coming out with homebrew for 2.0.good work.
i want more more more more
Excellent work - this is truely excellent. Congrats to all involved.
Sorry nevermind got it to work…ahhh is there a way to change the black wall paper?
73. yeah first usb to the psp and del the pic’s and put your background in.. the on the psp set it as the background.. usb back onto the psp and copy the psp01.tif back there and its sweet
this is nice, does anybody know how it works?
great work
let’s go to the great games now!!!!!
Does anyone have any idea how to change the speed of the paddles or the ball? it’s difficult.
Really good job!
does this mean that i can run and play emulators from my memory stick like in 1.5?
i dont have the psp yet.. tomorrow i will get mine with 2.0!
thx!
80. right at the moment.. no you will not be able to play games off yer memory stick.. well cept maybe a few small homebrew games.. give it a few weeks maybe a month or 2.. and who knows you might be able to do
THX A LOT NBR 74!!! GOT JESSICA ALBA IN THE BACKGROUND INSTEAD OF A BLACK SCREEN AWESOME!, READY FOR HOMEBREW!
keep up the good work..
Works on my EU PSP, didn’t work when I had USB and UMB plugged in though. Very cool. Can’t wait for emu’s and divx players ;-) Its like a mini xbox in the making.
that’s so cool,try again developers
works for me, only when its the only image in the folder :P
good work, keep it comeing.
Nice work to the developers. Im sure we all be playing games from the memory stick. Ill just wait paitently unlike those other idiots that keep bugging you with world’s dumbest questions lol. I laugh my ass off reading some of the comments on this site.
Cheers to the developers!
Great work!!
#85 Is there a working divx player for 1.5? I would love to see mplayer on my PSP! I hate having to reformat my movies!!
89 Why not just reformat to mp4, the files are much smaller and if u have a good 1 or 2 gigger that’s more movies. Besides, there is not a divx player for psp, sorry.
u guys say GREAT WORK AND IT WORKS!
how do you try it? with an emulator or what?
I dunno hwo everyone is running this without the frame_buffer background… I always get my PSP frozen, but If I use the buffer background it works some one type a short tutorial on how they got it to load w/o the frame_buffer please!
In adition to my last post, coudln’t someone make a homebrew TIF viewer so u coudl view TIFs on 1.5s and test 2.0 games out, or will it not work if started up in kernal mode?
hey! it works on the european version to!!=P
nr.#92. just copy the file and put it in PHOTOS and then when you start your psp go to photos and press x and the game will start automaticly!!
this is great i had this befor it was posted here! This is a great start to homebrew on a 2.00 psp now i’m just watilg till the emus come out.
i have a question: does this game run in kernal mode?.
