PSP Hombrew goes commercial

Gary13579 | September 21, 2005

Recently a few homebrew authors have been playing around with the idea of releasing their programs on a UMD.

The ones I know of so far are PSP Advance and PSP Kick.
On the PSP Advanced site, it has a link to preorder the UMD, and has a list of features that it will contain, including audio/video streaming and P2P networks.
I would personally buy this if it really does contain these things, as I have waited forever for a homebrew app that would do this.

I am not sure if PSP Kick has said anything on their site (it appears down to me), but on EFnet #pspupdates, FKR has announced that he was approached with the idea of releasing PSP Kick on a UMD.
He sounded very convincing, however, that there would still be a free version availible for all the homebrew users. Whether or not Sony will stand for this, we shall see (this could be a despirate attempt to kill off good homebrew programs).

If you know of any more programs that may be released on a UMD, please comment in this topic, and try to include a link

No pricing, that I could find. It would be a good thing, if a ton of the homebrew apps could be brought together, pay sony’s price, and get put on a umd. An emulators bundle on a umd could sure give the 2.0 users a lot of joy.

But emulators are borderline illegal also.

I am sure Sony would be getting a letter from both Nintendo and Sega if they tried that.

Still would be awesome :)

Think about it. They must have permission from Sony.

Sony is the only people that have UMD burners, and the only ones that can encrpyt the BOOT.BIN (or is it EBOOT.BIN?) so that it will play on the PSP ;)
I would think $15-$20 would be a reasonable price range, but $10 is a bit cheap.

It would make sense for sony to open up their doors, so to speak.

Have a place where people can submit their homebrew, including source code and sony inspects it, determines that it’s within their guidelines (eg. they probably wouldn’t pass an emulator, but, they might pass AOTM or a tetris clone or maybe even luaplayer [ooh, now this would be nice: there's a lot of lua games, like tetris, etc.]) and the person pays the licensing fee (if sony makes the licensing fee pretty cheap for homebrew. Maybe $50 for the first version and $10 for any subsequent versions of the same item). This would allow them control over the homebrew market, and allow homebrewers to create their own games. Win-Win.

Wouldnt it make homebrewing easier if you compare the homebrew version of some code and the umd version of the same code so you know what you put there and what sony put there?

i didnt checked it yet, but is it possible to play browser games (mostly java or flash) on the psp? if it is you can download them and copy to your psp. but i guess to play the games u need a shortcut in the kind which the AM-installer creats (shortcut in the explorer to open games)

It is a tough call really. On one side of the coin, we have seen how Sony has been sympathetic of homebrew before on its consoles – eg PS2 Linux Kit.

But at the same time, I cannot see how they would get involved in putting homebrew on UMDs, since then they are playing Russian Roulette. It is an investment that no company would want to make.

And then from there I can see two things happening; homebrew ceasing to be free(since people would need motivation to buy the homebrew, which having it offered for free as well as for purchase certainly does not motivate someone one bit). And the quality of free homebrew would drop significantly since then most of the good developers would join for-profit teams looking to make a turn around.

It all spells disaster for the homebrew scene if you ask me.

^^^^^^^^^^^

It’s not that easy. If I code Hello World from scratch, compile it and make an eboot out of it, and sony does the same, the only difference is their signature. The signature is on a per file basis: you cannot copy a signature from one file to another eboot. We already know the difference is their signature, but, there’s not much we can do about it.. there are two keys… public and private. The private key is used to sign the file, and the public key decrypts the signature and verifies it. There is no way to use the public key to determine the private key short of a brute force attack (yes, for each private key, there is a specific public key, but, indexing the possibilities is ridiculously difficult and time-consuming: there are trillions upon trillions of combinations).

I think it would be good for the Homebrew PSP developpers. Let them get some cash flow for all they have provided in our scene. Sony should applaud their efforts to transition from illegal execution to legal.

Well, they woudl need to find a way to crack the encryption on the UMDs to make them work, and that would mean they woudl work on 2.0 also… I emailed Andy Fung (hasnt replied yet…) telling him how greeat his app is and how I support his idea and aork completey andthat i thought it was a great diea to release on UMD. he also set it to new years 2006! I think i woudl like to see the LOWSER with LUA player and a bunch of good LUA gam,es like Snake, LUACave, air hockey, etc.

As fro PSP Kick, I like it, but they woudl ahve to add more features to release it on UMD. Anotgher good thing for a UMD would be DOOM ajnd a buncha good WADs, but doom is copyrighted, so thats outta the question.

Say goodbye to these homebrews. Do you think if Sony licenses them they won’t put a mandated 2.0 update on the UMD? The version changer is only going to work so long, Sony will get around it soon. Are you going to update for these? I’m not.

Ummmm. no, we could just suck otu an ISO John! Also, SONY IS NOT LISCENCING THESE!! I dunno where everyone is getitng that diea. THEY NEVER SAID THAT! maybe, maybe not! Next up is interesting how u said, “sony will get around it soon” Hmm.. so now sony has to m,ake THEIR way aorund their OWN SYSTEM!! And us hackers are the ones settign the guidlines for them! Even if they make UMDs use different things that the version changer wont work on, some1 will amke a new version changer!

If home brewers start making their umd’s they arent going to get as much profit as they think, because the kids with psp’s arent going to buy a umd to down grade their psp to 1.50…they just want is to play the newest Ape Escape. And the home brewers arent going to start buying the umd’s because they can just download them off a file sharer or on websites.

The soft ware to make umds are available. But I think sony is going to stop selling them because all the hackers that are messing with thier system are wanting to make a little money

ARE UMD BURNERS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC?…IF THEY ARE PEOPLE SHOULD GET THEM NOW. BECAUSE SONY WILL DEFINATLY STOP DOING THIS(IF THEY CONTINUE PEOPLE WILL START TO GET THEM AND BURN BLOCKBUSTER GAMES, AND SONY WILL STOP MAKING MONEY. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD A UMD GAME RITE OFF LIME WIRE

To # 17 -

To get a program on a UMD it needs to be licensed from Sony(to use their COPYRIGHTED disc medium).

Not to mention, to make it WORK on all PSP’s it needs to be licensed by Sony to USE THEIR AES KEYS AND SIGNATURE.

No matter how its sliced, Sony is still the end all be all of UMD software for the PSP.

and how is a Tetris Clone not illegal? this too would be a breach of copyright! BTW: an emulator pak on UMD would be nice that pulls the Roms from memory card… Nice!!! (you would be distributing the Emulator – Which is legal!)
