Socom: Fire Team Bravo Beta

greg | August 30, 2005

I’ve received 4 or 5 emails today with regard to Socom: Fire Team Bravo Beta testing. Unfortunately it involves upgrading your PSP to 2.0.

Check this out, from Sony…

You have been hand selected for a very special mission. For the first time, we’re beta testing a title exclusively for the PSPT (PlayStation®Portable) system - SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo. We’d like you to apply to be one of our beta testers. Space is limited, so register today, using only your PSP browser. (You will not be able to register for this beta test any other way.)

Just follow these simple steps:

1) Upgrade your PSP Firmware to 2.0*

2) From your PSP Internet browser go to http://pspbeta.us.playstation.com/ (PSP Beta Site) (We will only accept
registrations that are completed on the PSP browser.)

3) Follow the onscreen instructions to complete your registration

You will not receive a confirmation email. We will not send out acceptance notifications until all applications are processed.

Please note that this beta is ONLY playable online on your PSP system via a wireless Internet connection. No offline version is available.

*Instructions on how to download and install the 2.0 Firmware Upgrade:
. Information and instructions about using your computer to install the Firmware are available here.
. If you have wireless Internet access, simply choose the “Network Update” option under the settings menu of your PSP system. More details.

Sorry, Sony, but I’m keeping my 1.51 in the hopes that that downgrader will be available soon. I’d rather have my Rockman Dash then your little beta test.

I’ve subscribed, I’ve always had fun beta testing things.

Looking forward to receiving this package, I have a feeling not many people will be upgrading their PSPs for this, and I have always upgraded mine. :)

“These are the steps I used to sign up for the SOCOM BETA without using my PSP (and thusly, faking Sony).

1. You must have Mozilla Firefox. Get it at http://mozilla.org/products/firefox
2. You need to install this extension.
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=59
(Remember, after clicking install, you must completely close Firefox and restart it!!!)
3. Go to tools>User Agent Switcher>Options>Options.
4. Click on User Agents on the left.
5. Click Add.
6. In Description, put PSP (or whatever you wish to call it.)
7. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
In the User Agent box, put:
Mozilla/4.0+(PSP+(PlayStation+Portable);+2.00)
EXACTLY as shown.
8. Hit OK, then OK again.
9. Go to tools>User Agent Switcher>PSP
10. Now browse to the beta signup page that you received in the email.
(Note that you must have already registered your PSP on playstation.com, and marked that you do have wireless internet to receive the email)
11. You’ll notice that the page will display normally. Fill out the info, and submit everything. Yay! Now to wait for the “You’re Accepted” email!

Second Note: This does NOT GUARANTEE that you will automatically be accepted, nor that the SOCOM game itself will run on firmware lower than 2.00. This simply bypasses the restriction on the beta signup form.

I’m gonna betatest because I was foolhardy enough to think that I was scerwed with my 1.52 so if I couldn’t have homebrew I decided would have to live with it so I went to 2.0 before I heard of this legended downgrader which is great for 1.5x holders.

38 is right. No matter how many times you try and force upgrades on people, someone who is very talented will come along and slice and dice the firmware up. If you really wanted to prevent this you should have been more innovated like (I hate to say it…) The big N. Sure cartridges are outdated and the touch screen seems like a gimmick but you can’t really properly emulate a DS to easily. Eventually they’ll make flash cards for the DS But nintendo has always been very good at avoiding piracy (Well to a certain extent anyhow). I mean look at all the “progress” GCN emulators have made (not to crap on any talented people’s work). Point is Sony attached a USB connection to their hand helds and people will absolutely take advantage to the fullest. No matter what they do to prevent it, there will be ways around security and once one person knows, everyone knows. And even if its illegal there is nothing anyone can really do about it. Just like they think they are really gonna monitor the internet. Well good luck b/c you’d need as much ppl as use it currently to day. Can’t watch us all mwa hahaha

because a downgrade is a big secret revelead at last …the way to downgrade is easyer then to hack a firmware .. actualy yoshihiro didnt hack the firmware to make it downgrade is a TRICK with PRX file , is like you swich some prx from a 1.50 in a 1.52 update …then the firmware PAST the old prx with the new faked prx from 1.50 then the PSP is downgraded with a update …is a good trick but not a hack !

Just to add what to what #40 said, who the f**k is going to shell out for a UMD movie? they cost more than a DVD and are more limited. With a USB cable, the dumbasses at sony let us rip DVD’s & shrink em for use on our PSP’s. I havent worked out how this isnt illegal but with a region1 console in a region2 country this is the way i watch movies on PSP

And as for #39’s comment about shelling out for pacman, the decent ppl at sony could atleast give us that as a free game or something that we could download to memory stick.

Until then,This site is still gonna be living strong and the more sony updates, the more hackers will hack!

People make fun of Nintendo but they’re obviously smarter than the people at sony

2005-08-31 17:06:34

Well for one Techni, even if you did put a tracker in the site, I doubt you can fine us. Just because we download programs or software. Its not illegal til we use them. So therefore you can not fine anyone for anything unless you go to everyones house and check out their PSPs. As for SOCOM, eh its not Halo but PS2 is lacking in the good FPS games, PS2 is grand for RPGs, and fighting games. Everquest: Frontiers was awsome too if your into MMORPGs. Other then that I use my xbox for Halo X-Men Legends and KOTOR. NGC for Animal Crossing, and Zelda.

Hey.. my comment was deleted! What gives. Anyways. \. I agree with #64, hackers will forever be around. I mean, come on. People creat games for calculators for god’s sake. Did Sony honestly think that there wouldn’t be any hackers, especially since they added their usb plug-in to the psp. And I do have to say, alot of the games I have played on the psp suck really bad and are no fun. There are only a few games that I think will be worth my money and I will buy them. As for running games off of the memory stick; I download them, try them out for a day, and then I delete them. I decided weather or not I want to buy it in that time. Most games I will never buy. I have tried Medievil, and I will buy it when it comes to the US. I will also buy GTA. Just a heads-up on what some people use the “illegal” homebrew for.

I actually like some of the games that have been coming out. Hot shots golf is fun although a little weird with the shims and the herms. Untold Legends is cool. Death Jr. is severly under-rated. Lumines is very very fun. So there are some titles out there that are awsome. It will take a little while for alot of games to come out. Just like the DS it takes time for the developers to make games. When the DS first came out most people were complaining about how there are only crappy games but they are getting better and there is alot more variety now. The same will go for the psp. But I am upset about FF getting yanked from the PSP. I just want any decent RPG (not action/RPG) WITHOUT A STUPID POKEMON STYLE CARD BATTLE SYSTEM.

First, if you can’t download the new 2.0 via PSP, you can download it via computer then using a firewire cable upload it to the PSP.

Second, If you have a wireless router you can DL it directly to the PSP.

Third, 2.0 has many new features you will want on the PSP; i.e. the web brower
