Europeans out of luck for homebrew.

Alias420 | July 27, 2005

EuroGamer.net is reporting on, how all Sony PSP’s shipped for the September 1st launch will come with firmware version 2.0. With only a month until launch, I’m sure europeans will anxiously be awaiting a hack for the v2.0 firmware.

lol I just bought a second psp to return my scratched one at ebgames. Thank god I read the article saying that if the letter A or nothing is at the top right of the barcode that means it’s 1.5. Now I can put my brand new brando crystal clear screen protector (hard plastic)

haha sucks for europeans, but even then, they are not supposed to use emu’s and stuff, cause chances are what the avg person does is illegal, for instance use a rom without buying the game, for more then 24 hours, how many of you actually delete the rom after 24 hours, but then again i break ALOT of laws, not talking about gaming stuff but uhmm the way i make my money, through the black market, im a hussler i sell jewelery, drugs, and anything that someone wants me to get em but, i got locked up and i am thinking about getting a job and living the life legitly cause ig to several felonies on my record

Is it just me who thinks that selling drugs and running unlicensed or copied software on a PSP isn’t quite the same thing? Or do you consider copy sharing (I refuse to call it “piracy” since nobody is making any money off the P2P networks most people use nowadays) some sort of “gateway” crime? Shringo… sorry, but your comment is just too bizarre for me… :S

BTW: These news sucks big time… But I don’t think the firmware protection will last for long. After all, it’s basically like a flashable bios. If you manage to access the hardware directly you should be able to program it any way you like, no matter what the software (read “firmware”) says. I think that is what Team Xecuter was talking about earlier… the discoveries that made firmware rollback possible on their dev unit… Gah. Why doesn’t Sony just give up? They should know by now that they can’t win this kind of battle.

just to tell you, they did not add any protection on the 2.0 that was not in 1.52, the 2.0 was made for all the people who don’t know or don’t care about playing game iso’s or homebrew.

Aint no thing!
If people in europe (like myself) want a psp, surely they would have bought one by now from ebay or what ever. You can get them for the same price on import so why wait?
I didnt.
Up yours sony

for #11]]’Source: IGN

One extra note not in the official documents — the PSP is more secure than ever against hacker and homebrew application support. Sony did not announce this officially, and we would never have known about it unless coders hadn’t found the new chunks of added security code. ‘Mr A’ of MaxConsole reports that the PSP’s security file has been significantly changed in the update, locking out all but the most determined hackers — in order to play homemade programs on the PSP, coders would have to decrypt the security code, and in order to get the code to decrypt, they would have to have a cracked program to run on the system. Also new to this version is the presence of Sony’s DNAS security system — this system is notorious on PS2 for making things difficult on hackers (although it also has helped keep out cheaters), and although there is reported to be not much implementation yet of DNAS in the system, it’s now in there.

Sony is right now in a battle with hackers to try to lock out pirate programs on PSP — including emulators and even full-blown rips of PSP games — and this is an important step for them. It is also a giant step back for home software makers and homebrew enthusiasts (as well as the semi-harmless PSP users who are gleefully enjoying these unlicensed programs.) Some users are refusing to update their PSPs if it means losing access to homebrew applications, and even the 2.00 update has not been enough to convince some. As Sony has, in the past, traveled a few steps down the road of open access with its Net Yaroze and PS2 Linux Kit, we would love to see SCE offer a homebrew development system for allowing PSP programmers to make applications. Until then, though, the debate continues. ‘

First of all -> Europe gets screwed again! (Lame corporations)
Second -> I somehow understand this sh@t, since here it is LEGAL to make backup-copies of your games (Heh, Sony NEVER liked that) for personal use.
Third -> Here in Holland you may hack a console providing you don’t do harm to any company or make profits.

Europe got seriously fucked, givin the royal screw job even. I bet now the psp v1.5 prices will sore up on ebay! The europeans that will want a psp v1.50 will have to pay more money! Plus sony might make games with region codes that will make european games not playable in japanese or North American psps, so everyone with imported psps will have to import games.

I am from the UK, and I got myself a JAP version 1.0 PSP. It is now at version 2 as everytime an upgrade came out, I was first in line, purely to keep it cutting edge. I have never been bothered about homebrew stuff, I bought it to play cool looking 3D games, not pong, or old gameboy games etc. Dont get me wrong, I think all the hackers and homebrew developers ae being very clever, and Kudos to them, but for average joe, they want to be able to go to dixons, pick up a PSP, and play games. I bet out of the total population of PSP owners, only a very small percent (and I mean tiny percent) are bothered about homebrew software. My two pence worth.

I was looking forward to paying 179.99 english pounds for one. NOT…You yanks don’t know how lucky you all are, you have a very high standard of living in general with far cheaper prices - as long as you got money in the first place that is :)

I’m from the UK! and bought my Jap PSP v1.50 about a month ago for £165.00. I bought it because I knew all about the Homebrew stuff, as i’m right into that kind of stuff. I’m very happy with my PSP and will NOT be upgrading to v1.51, 1.52 or v2.0. It’s staying a v1.50 PSP until they have a solution for downgrading the Firmware for the newer Firmwares. As soon as it’s possible to do that, that’ll be the only time I think of upgrading Firmware.

Hmm…I got a question. Sure, you can run from those firmware updates now, but do you think its possible that Sony will start putting mandatory upgrades on all (or some) of their future games? Say, a popular game such as Grand Theft Auto? Cause I heard of some games being shipped with these upgrades, like Midnight Club. Think its possible?

yea its preety messed up that we brought their product and now that their not satisfied with the way it is there taking it back and fixing it without our consent, i also think the developer should decide whether or not their game needs updates sony games would require them but games like gta where the company is more layed back may let the update slide

As much as a hassle as it will be trying to hack 2.0, at least the new firmware will FINALLY be compatible with Sony’s music service, Sony Connect, which is only logical. And the AAC compatibility is nice too if you use iTunes (minus the DRM protected tracks from the music store).

Damn! I planed to buy a PSP here in Switzerland in September. Thought importing one from Japan/USA would be pointless but now… For me the PSP, and most other gadgets like mobiles etc, have to be customizible. I want to run the programs I need and not the ones that some big company thinks I could use.
I think the PSP has great hardware and great potential but as it is at the moment I’m not going to buy one. Maybe when they manage to crack it (not because of the cracked games, but because of the homebrew) or when sony adds (enebles) enough features…

To #20 - 1.5 is not only about old games idiot. It’s about not paying for PSP games with faster loadings and enhanced battery life. And I still love to play SNES games. If you don’t like it it’s maybe cause you never owned one.

To #22 - Yes, maybe you have a life but your an idiot. This argument is the most stupid I ever heard. “people say that because they cant afford two.” Only geeks like you think that way. We are not suposed to buy 2 250$ psps, and even for the crappy sony update, thats lame. But for the part when your talking about sony, i agree :P

What’s the point of owning a PSP and not willing to buy any PSP games.

If you only want homebrew, I suggest you wait for GPX32 (new version of GP32). I’m sure GPX32 will have a lot of homebrew and hardly any game for you to buy

Well the GPX2 is kind of cool, but its not nearly as fast as the PSP, and I know that im not going to buy one when my PSP already does everything it can.
Hmmmm this thread is going slightly off topic so to bring it back. I wouldnt worry about the V2.0 firmware shipping for european PSPs. It will be cracked.
