Shine, from the official Playstation forums, has released a Snake homebrew game for PSP.

Download Snake for your PSP! - source is included.

Apparently it’s a bit buggy at the moment, but very playable nonetheless.

PSP Hacks Backgrounds Back Online!

greg | June 26, 2005

Good news and bad news; good news first - the PSP backgrounds area is back online! We’re still working out minor bugs so bare with us as you may experience the odd PHP error while we tweak the code a bit further. Now to the bad news, I was unwilling to assign all ~ 800 background submissions to categories, so I’ve truncated the database and we’re starting fresh. So start filling it up! Please try and upload to the respective categories.

Thanks.

  • Tons of fixes…

Here’s how it works:

  4. Download.
  5. Extract the entire contents to the root of your memory card.

or Just click Download All and start at (5)!

As PSPBrew.com was spawned from PSP-Hacks it is working with PSP-Hacks.com in creating an updating network so that all PSP users are always able to get up to the second brew software. Developers can contact MonkeyMaximus to be able to update your application yourself. This will allow it to be mirrored to this network of sites within minutes.

First PSP Trainer!

greg | June 25, 2005

source: ps2nfo

WAB has released a Puzzle Bobble PSP Trainer. This is the first PSP Trainer to ever be released - options include:

  • Infinite Time
  • All Levels
  • All Bonuses & Points

And this…

“More interestingly, once you select Launch Game from the Trainer menu it attempts to locate EBOOT.BIN on MS0… perhaps yet another indication of the ability to launch UMD Images via Memory Stick coming in the near future although they should be calling BOOT.BIN instead. In any case, cool stuff indeed!”

Sei PSP Tool

greg | June 24, 2005

Update: v0.3 has been released. Please remember folks, this is a work in progress.

v0.3 changes:

  • Fixed Memory Leak//Releasing of File
  • Fixed Writing to wrong file
  • Fixed Extracting of DATA.PSP file wrong
  • Fixed PBP Version number
  • Changed Offset to be like PBP Unpacker
  • Differs from Document
  • Added: Customise PBP file

Download Sei PSP Tool v0.3

source: psphacker

Inspired by KXploit - Sei from psphacker has created a tool which works in the same manner; however, it allows you to hide the “Corrupted Data” icons in the PSP game menu! Though this does work with many PSP homebrew, keep in mind - it is a work in progress!

“This program works works like the KXploit, but has the option to hide the corrupt data files. Sei PSP Tool will work with all emulators in normal mode, but there are a few bugs in the “hide corrupt data filesâ€? part still. This program is a work in progress and the “hide corrupt data filesâ€? option only works with games that dont require a specific folder name (IE Doom-PSP). Also currently there is a problem with folder names that are 5–6 characters long. We will keep you posted as this program develops.”

Download Sei Tool v0.2

Follow these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Plug your PSP in to your computer via USB
  2. On your PSP go to USB Connection
  3. On your PC, double click SeiPSPTool.exe
  4. In the “Name” field type the folder name you want for your emulator (on your psp). NOTE: Some emulators require specifically named folders, check the UFAQ in our forums.
  5. Click “…” and navigate to the EBOOT.PBP of the emulator or game you wish to put on your PSP
  6. Click the dropdown menu next to “PSP Unit” and navigate to the drive letter your computer assigned to the PSP
  7. If you want to use a custom Icon, navigate to that
  8. Click generate and it will automatically install the files on to your PSP. Now just put ROMs in the folder WITHOUT the “%” on your PSP.

Enjoy!

KXploit Analyzed

greg | June 24, 2005

I was surfing PS2Dev.org’s forums and came across this post explaining how the KXploit gets around having to use a swap trick. He also has some theories about extending these vulnerablities to the v1.51 & 1.52 and shows that not everything was patched by Sony in their lastest updates.

It appears that the reason the single-card KXploit works on 1.5 is twofold:

1. Treating the filename as a format string causes the HELLO% folder name to be translated to HELLO when being passed to the bootstrap code
2. The 1.50 bootstrap executes a bare ELF if it’s been passed one

Of course, the bare ELF execution was fixed on 1.51 and 1.52, so it no longer works there, failing after boot with 80020148 (”file type unsupported”). But this would only work if the format string vulnerability were still there. Experimentation verifies this:

When danj tried using %p etc, the error changes to 80010002, which would be because HELLO%p changed to e.g. HELLO12345678, and 80010002 is ENOENT.

When Nick Fury tried %c, the error is 8001000D, which is EACCESS and could be caused by %c generating an invalid character in the filename.

When danj tried using %n, it crashes his PSP, because %n causes writes to memory. That’s the vulnerability.

I convinced a friend to upgrade 1.51 -> 1.52 and verified that this bug does still exist on 1.52. Writing an exploit is non-trivial, partially because we can’t see the result of the format string expansion, and partially because MIPS exploits could be annoying (need to flush dcache)… but it’s definitely got potential.
