PSPersonalize – Custom PSP Backgrounds!
greg | June 20, 2005
Update: aj left this as a comment; a tool which will aid in the creation of custom PSP backgrounds. Basically it’s a collection of bitmaps and PSDs serving as a template mapping out where the PSP menu is drawn on the screen. Download Background Layout 1.0 by Balanced123.
Update: Check out our PSP Backgrounds section to further customize your PSP, or submit your own!
source: dual-scene.com
As we previously reported on the possibility of customizing your PSP background; the time has come! Vampire and DrEggman have developed PSPersonalize! This application will allow you to use your own custom backgrounds for each month!
From the included readme.txt:
“Here’s how it works:
There are 12 images in your PSP:
01.BMP – January
02.BMP – February
03.BMP – March
04.BMP – April
05.BMP – May
06.BMP – June
07.BMP – July
08.BMP – August
09.BMP – September
10.BMP – October
11.BMP – November
12.BMP – DecemberTo insert your own images, simply put your own 24-bit BMP file in the root directory of your second memory stick. The filename should match the number of the month you want to replace. (Ex: I want to replace November so I would create a .BMP called 11.BMP and place it in my 2nd memory stick)
Do NOT put images in any of the directories in your memory stick, the software won’t find them in this case.
Ok, now that we know how to replace the images, we have to know the rules. First, images can’t be any larger than 150k. That’s a resolution of about 300×170. The reason for this is that anything larger causes your PSP to not load icons properly. Second rule, these images must be 24bit. Do NOT use images that are 16bit or 8bit color.
When you are done updating the backgrounds, press the “home” button and exit. Then turn off your PSP by holding the Power Slider for 5 seconds. Once that is done, you are good to go.”
Download PSPersonalize Ver. 1.0
Also, here are the original backgrounds, incase you want to restore them.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Props to Vampire and DrEggman for this release.
Enjoy! :)

Awesome, I’m going to try it out right now
Any reason the file is password protected?
please post some nice backgrounds, too lazy to make my own
Ditto :) Too lazy. I’m sure a TON will pop up in no time.
Once again a TOP NOTCH real hack that’s worth tons of praise!!!!
THE PASSWORD IS
1up
Absolutely wonderful. Good stuff guys.
cool, I gotta go make some nice backgrounds
has anybody done this with the single memory card swap trick yet ?
i got 2 pbp files here and im kinda lost on how it all goes into the 1.50
a tutorial for single card swaptrick would be nice if anybody has done it
thanks
fLuffer, just leave the .BMP in the root directory of the memory stick. Then use the single swap trick method.
where exactly do you put the .BMP image? If any one gets this to work let us all know how.
In the root directory of the memory stick… meaning, the very top level. X:\ (X: = the removeable drive letter in Windows). Place it there.
Excellent hack, wonderful program, however I’ve noticed that sometimes it doesn’t load the bmp. After updating the pics and flipping through the dates, it would only show the picture every other time, else I wind up with a pure white screen. It doesn’t lock the psp and it’s not “permanent.” Just means that you may have to reflip to the date after the month ends.. Thanks though, ;’)
ok admin , did that
now i got 2 eboots.. exactly what do i do with them during the swap trick
do i split them boths up and put them in diff folder
This is awesome! I made my own backgrounds I got the suns on mine!
Boot it the same way you’d boot any homebrew. The EBOOT.PBP from the Memory Stick 1 directory goes on the 1st memory stick. And the EBOOT.PBP from the MS 2 directory goes on memory stick #2.
If you’re using the single swap method, use that batch file that was posted earlier. You still require a memory stick reader for your PC to use it.
Giver!
Hey,
Will this work on version 1.51? I haven’t seen this posted, and i know that the swaploit hack wont. I tried it (yes, i’m on 1.51) and maybe i just didn’t do it right or something? I keep getting the error code “this game cannot be opened 80081…” something goofy like that. Any help?
-TC
hell ya 16 the suns are sick…
k well when i swap them up into the ms1 ms2
i end up with 2 eboots in the ms2 folder..
so i get this
MS1 : EBOOT.PBP
MS2 : EBOOT.PBP
and
EBOOT.PBP2
so which of the regular eboots do i use ?
actually wait im wrong , when i downloaded the file i had
2 eboot.pbp
and a read me.. nothing says anything about there being 2 eboots
i did it with just one of the eboots in the zip file and i get it to load but then it says
…finished
but the main PSPer. download .zip had 2 eboots , did it for anybody else ?
im having the same problem i get a black screen that says …finished
what am i doing wrong fellas ?
did you make sure the bmp was 06.bmp, first time I ran it, it did that and found out I forgot the add a 0.
Vager , what version are u running and are u using the double or single swap trick ?
yes, i have to agree with 23. I also made sure that the bmp was exactly 06.bmp. So it must be some step me and some others are missing and I really want to do this so bad, so please help.
my PSPersonalize.zip come with two Eboot.pbp and one read me file..
PSPersonalize.zip Contain’s :
EBOOT.PBP (file size 380KB)
EBOOT.PBP (file size 196KB)
readme.txt (file size 4KB)
—————————
which eboot is everybody using in the MSwap Tool ?
i know u cant use both.. or can ya ?
man somebody should make a psp 1 stick swap tutorial on this
cause it only talks about the 2 swap trick
has anyone done this on 1 stick ? if show write out a tutorial please !!
Just a WARNING !!!
the PSP’s LCD is prompt to burning,
and you may end up having your custom background’s shadow for life.
don’t say I didn’t warn you.
(read your manuals)
It will make a semi-permanent picture if you leave the same image on there for a long peiod of time. So its not a problem unless you leave it for 2 hours or somthing.
Edit- Semi-permanant “stain”
same problem here post#36
did you get 2 eboots in ur download zip ?
does this apps work on 1.0 ?
I got a 1.52 and I only made 1 image and I did put it in the root directory X:/01.bmp and I ran the program but an error came up and no black screen popped up saying finished or anything… Now do I put the pictures on before I start the program or do I have to upload them after i start the program?
It would be nice if they had a step by step instruction txt file included… cause I don’t get it because it never explained the whole process on how to do it…
ive gotten that problem before
i re made my PSPersonalize files , and made a small icon all black about the size of the normal psp backrounds , and sure enough it booted right up and worked
try making a backround 60×34 and putting it in ur memory card where the psp file is.. not in the psp file.. next to it..
then boot up the pspersonalize program with the swap trick.. and u should get a thing asking you to push circle = ok
then push the home button then x
and it should work.. then after that u can make the pictures larger of anything u want..
just something i did and it worked
maybe i got lucky who knows
give it a try might fix ur problem
I don’t get what you guys mean by swap trick or w/e its called… is there a page on that? cause i don’t get it…
MSwap program that u need 2 memory sticks for
i personally use the single swap trick for MSwap , its in the downloads section of the site
i use my USB cable , Memory Card , and PC Card Reader to do this
u just gotta figure it out on ur own cause even if explained.. 80% of the people go HUH ?
like me.. i was there i was like that , but i started dinking around and BAM im getting the hang of this all , and im doing pretty good
but if you go to wwwpsphacker.com in the forums they got really good tutorials on some things that might get ya started
hope to have ya catch up its fun as hell to mod the psp’s !!!
do u have to have a pic on there for it to boot up
what do you mean , explain a little more..
PSPersonalize comes with two EBOOT’s; one for memory stick 1 and one for memory stick 2.
Basically this package comes “pre-MSwapped” for your convenience. Just simply take a look at the directory structure in the ZIP archive; it’s straight forward.
EBOOT.PBP 378KB is for MS1.
EBOOT.PBP 196KB is for MS2.
As for the people, “why does it keep saying finished?” – this means the application is done. If you placed the Bitmap (BMP) in the root directory and ran the PSPersonlize EBOOT, reboot your PSP to see the new background.
u gotta remember admin ,
for people using single swap , its a tad bit differnt lol
thats why i had such a hard time , but some how.. some way i figured it out by just using ONE of the eboots.. the other one i tossed away
and now i have skulls on my backround , it rocks !!
thanks everyone who made this possible and thanks admin for the post on it this site kicks ass !!
jared yes , runs on v1.50 just fine
any news on the new intros for the emulators admin.. or anyone who knows ?
anyone good at photoshop here?
i wanna make my bg Link actually look decent; if possible, please remove the edges of the gradiant-ed squares i did
hmm heres full link
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/
balanced123/example.zip
u guys do know your tapping into the storage space on the psp so.. big file pictures = slower game play / freezing / overheating / crashing..
me personally.. only made new color pictures and i made them 60×34 and over all the 12 pictures at that size equals about the same as the old ones
so im sitting good , just a thought for people who love their psp’s.. its a risk ur gunna take but im gunna just keep mine black :)
but..
01-12.bmp’s at 60×34
solid black
black all year round looks great and sexy as hell
and might i add that once u have the backrounds up and going , u can go back and delete them off ur memory stick and they stay there
for them who didnt know
i still cant wait till they get the next bunch out , audio/video on the menu screens is gunna be awesome
i wanna have mine be a girls voice so when it loads it says
hey sexy !!
lmao
OH and also the new VIDEO hack coming out for when the psp goes to load a game.. man i cant wait psp owns
Credit : Dual Scene
The bootup animation when you load software on the PSP has been hacked. We took a PMF at
screen resolution and replaced the video in the firmware. Credit goes to Vampire for writing the PSP app and DrEggman for the video work.
You can view the video here
http://www.dual-scene.com/PSP/PSProof.wmv
ok this does NOT work on 1.51 or 1.52, if your using 1.5 as I am, this is what you have to do.
Set up MS1 with the Eboot from the file so it looks like this. Root/PSP/GAME/PSPersonalize/eboot.pbp
then place the stuff from the MS2 folder where it needs to go on MS2.
Place your images you wish to replace into the ROOT folder of MS2 so it would be like ROOT/01.BMP and look like this
ROOT
+PSP
+MP_ROOT(if you watch movies)
-01.BMP
-02.BMP
-03.BMP
-04.BMP
-05.BMP
-06.BMP
-07.BMP
-08.BMP
-09.BMP
-10.BMP
-11.BMP
-12.BMP
of course you dont NEED them all, just the month number you wish to replace. I hope this helps you, it helped me and I figured I would try to help other people as well.
i’ve done everything you did mystic (59) and mines is still not loading yes I have a 1.5 and I have two ms and yes, i am using 1.5 swap trick. I get the black finished screen and everything and still nothing. I think it would probably be cool if someone went step by step with me or something because i know i am doing something wrong, but what ?
does the date format on the psp have to be set up a certain way ?
my dear people I got it! When you get an image that will go in as a background for the psp you must click on the image and save it as 00.BMP so then when you do put the image on the root of the psp, the name of the image will only have 2 digits. Example: save picture as hhhmmm… 06.BMP and when you save it name will be 06. Then you put on the rot of the psp and walla, that shoud work for you.
somthings not right my images sre from here and there the right size just cant seem to get this to work
If you read the instructions carefully, it wouldn’t turn your psp into a brick.
telling everyone it doesn’t work won’t help, plz tell us what error it gives you or message.
RE:64
how can you have possibly fried your psp from doing this? the directions are so simple, yet people still have a hard time
I am having the same finish message. I did everything right. I rename my bmp to 06.BMP and put it on the root. Also, I am doing it with only one Memory stick. Dose it matter if I put the extension in CAPS cuz I did. And it only said finish with a black screen. And the background is still the same color “blue”.
Mine still won’t work,
(On my version 1.50) I put the EBOOT.php(378k) file on MS1 and put the EBOOT.php(196k) on MS2, I then put my 06 and 07.bmp images in the “ROOT” folder next to “MP_ROOT” and “PSP”.
So in my “ROOT” folder I have MP_ROOT, PSP, 06.bmp, and 07.bmp. Then I loaded the program it says finished and then I pressed home, and the screen was still purple and then I turned it off and turned it back on and the screen was still purple! Mine won’t work what em I doing wrong?
#70 I am have the same problem as you.
can someone epxlain the single swap trick? Email me at childofkorn000@aol.com
well i give up this sounds cool but i dont wanna end up like 64 gl guys
Thats what I did and it worked, other then I had only one bmp.
Try it with just one bmp file.
Thanx for the tip Vager but no luck still, I tried everything everyone else did but no luck.
Oh my god, what fools you are, worked 1st time for me same as everything else that’s been posted here. With such a novice attitude I don’t think you should bother even trying, and if you do try it, “READ THE INSTRUCTIONS” they work.
Do you need 2 Memory Stick’s to do this AND do you need the 1.5 exploit downloaded to your PSP?
if you ask for the password, you’ll probably brick you psp because you never read the instructions.
ello, i posted comment 64.. my psp is working again!! w00t! AND i got the backgrounds working! i put my mem stick in a reader and formatted it.. for sum reason it wouldnt boot the psp with the mem stick after i used the background change prog. But i tried again and it works!! yay!!
and for commen 77… ur an ass… theyre doin the best they can with what they have, you need to check your attitude mister.
reporting the site to sony.. tsk tsk.. go buy a DS you monkey and give your psp to somone more deserving. wshame on you!
This hack does have problem, when u switch the month in setting back and forth u will notice you get a white background, then when u press the x again the background will come up. I am just change 1 month for now, don’t want to fool around too much.
every hack works on here so i dont know what your talking about #88
I like PSP-hacks.com
But jesus, everyone posting on here really NEED to read the damned instructions on how to do this…it is not Calculus or Quantum Physics.
the README explains almost everything! you should already know which stick everything goes on. the password is IN the readme file..so, god damnit read the thing!
seriously…20 posts of “whats password” “what do I do with the files” “why do I need 2 sticks”
PSP-hacks.com need to filter out the lame questions that can easily be answered if they looked just the tiniest of bits.
I got it! Who ever followed all the instructions and it still didn’t work, try checking the simple problems. All I had to do is change the filename of the picture. My picture’s where called 06.bmp instead of just 06 and thats why they didn’t work. It’s always something simple.
ok…i take that all back up there, i got all of it 2 work now…except the sega emulator! sum1 help me!
ive done
gameboy/color
nintendo
super nintendo
backround hack
and they all work
i cant get the sega one to work no matter what i try
not that i care.. but it would be nice to play , ill keep dinking around to see if i can fix it , ill make a “method b” eboots and stuff to see if that works
“method b” works pretty good , i trust it better than letting a computer do the work and screwing something up
good day
i agree with 87 stop whinning and admin please filter useless post like psphacker.com does
i wanted to mail something to the backgrounds email; but i keep getting a mail systems error; can you admin, take a look at this:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/
balanced123/MenuLayout.zip
i spent a few hours guessing and testing where the menus appear; hope its useful
Thx aj,
I’ll update my PSPLinux Background with some of it.
so does anybody know when we are getting the custom game loading movies ?
i know where to get the program to format the rare file type and i have the PBPunpacker to open up the dump
im going to experiment i was just wondering how far anybody has gotten with it
example here:
http://www.dual-scene.com/PSP/PSProof.wmv
anyone know how to run this on 1.0 ? i never do MS swapping.. (and don’t have 2 MS)
any explanation about the 1st EBOOT and 2nd EBOOT do ?
i did what exactly what the tutorial said and i always get the (finished…) word and a black background. can someone please show a video how you put the background. that would be very helpful.
#98, look at the name of your picture files in your ROOT Directory. Is the name for example 06.bmp or is it just 06? You want to name the files just 06 with out the .bmp, but they have to be in the .bmp format.
#100, open notepad, type Hey for an example, and click file save and save the file as hey.bat and then press okay, and find it, and it should be a .bat file
#99. I have 06.bmp and it’s in the root (beside the psp folder).
Yes i got it. thanks #99.(Michael)
Yup, glad to help, I had the same probelm. Its always something simple wrong. I was struggleing with that same problem.
aj, Sweet contribution!!! I was just in the middle of doing this :) Thanks for this huge time saver!!!
awesome , post filter must be in effect cause we went from 100 some post down to 83
this place just keeps getting better and better
READ THE TUTORIALS PEOPLE
good day
Ok, its not that I havent read the instructions, its just not working for my psp also. I took the PSPersonalize folder and put it in my game folder in both memory sticks accordingly (MS1 and MS2) then in my second memory stick’s root directory which is J:\ and put all the pictures with the correct name. I then booted the program up like any other homebrew, and it said finished. So I followed the instructions and pressed “HOME” and exited. Then I held the sliding switch for 5 seconds untill it turned off and then turned it back on! but damn! still this damn purple screen!!!!! Can anyone lend a hand? or is it just a PSP defect?
Kamishiro,
Check the file name of your picture(s). In the the readme they tell you to change the filename to example 06.bmp. But what you want to do is just make the filename 06 instead of 06.bmp. You still want to convert or make it into a .bmp but don’t put into the name. So get a .bmp and put it into your ROOT directory (next to “PSP”) and name it 06.
to #85. try to put just the number 06 without the .bmp just the number. it worked for me.
well dookie..
try this..
1. http://www.google.com
2. search for tutorial on how to make bat files
3. dont be disrespectful or you can just forget about help from this website
——————————-
we dont need ur kind here , grow up
good day
#86 + #87 I have tried it both ways and neither way has worked!
for backgrounds try http://www.firesuite.com
it worked for me but my new backgrounds came up off centered discolored and had a fuzzy noise bar towards the bottem of the screen, but i did get the new bg up
Is there anthing you folks can do for a 1.52 i want pics so bad
I got one background up pretty good, and I tried to put another but it came out as this bright ass screen. anyone else having the same problem?
Yeah, I had that problem too. It seemed like it happened for every odd numbered month, lol.
Can someone pls tell me how to get this to work on a 1.0? I put the EBOOT from ms1 in the game folder, then the bmp in root. When i select the psppersonalise, it loads up, then i get a black screen that says finshed. When i exit and reboot i just get the normal background.
Cheers
Dose anybody know how to take out the defult background form memory. For example, when I try to change the month it gives me a white screen then I have to press it again inorder for it to load the proper background. Also, when navigating to pick the emulators for the memory stick it gives it a hard time updating the image of the emulators and makes the imagies look square with white then it loads the image. Any idea on how to take care of this.
i got all the pictures on there properly. but only half of them work its either all the even months or all the odds, i even tried putting the same picture in there with different file names 1-12 and it did the same thing, has anyone else had this problem? if so what do you recommend?
…. nevermind you have to click on the date again and it will show you the picture you installed. TRIAL AND ERROR PREVAILS!
Everytime it ry it says game cannot be started and in my 2nd memory card it says corruoted data…please help..Im a GatorMMX!
ok so i need some help here, this is my first hack and i dont know wats going on, so i downloaded the file do i put this on my psp, so i have my image and its all correctly sized what do i name it, i have it 11.BMP as the name, so i put in the main root which is where it says PSP folder bot where it has the game photo music folders, i only have 1 memory stick, so i put this picture in turned it off turned it back on and no picture what am i doing wrong, feel free to email me to explain, at dizzyt70343@hotmail.com thanx

Can someone help me out i have ABSOLUTLEY NO IDEA WATSOEVER HOW TO WORK THIS. PLZ Email me the intructions my email is BuenosDiaz720@msn.com
Does anyone know just how much space these pictures take up on the internal PSP flash?
And does anyone have any FATAL encounters upon doing this mod?
I just finished my bitmaps tonight and I will try to load them tomorrow. And I promise that I will read the “read me,” because it’s fundamental!
n e 1 here kno hw much memory iz actually embedded in da pspz firmware? juz curious
Okay, i’m starting to get pissed right now because I have been trying to get this thing going on my PSP for two days now, and I can’t get it to work. I’ve followed every single instruction exactly up until I have to run PSPersonalize in the game folder. When i do, it WILL NOT detect the background images, and it takes me to an eboot file. This is where I get confused. Someone please help before I throw my PSP at the wall!
I have tried it to.
1. The MS2 file is corrupted when I dl into the game folder
2. I try it with the MS1 program but nothing happens. It shows the program and loads it liek a UMD game. The screen goes black and then an error that game can not load or something. I didnt understand why you need two ms. I have two but the instructions jsut says put the images into the second stick. Then what?
what is a root directory
Hello, I have followed the given instructions that are made from using Windows XP. I am using Windows 98 and some of these steps are different for me. I didn’t get a ‘PSPersonalize%’ folder, I will state everything that came in my package:
Ms1 – Psp – Game – PSPersonalize – Eboot.pbp(size: 378KB)
Ms2 – Psp – Game – PSPersonalize – Eboot.pbp(size: 196KB)
readme
I followed the instructions best I can. (Using the 1 memory stick swap way) I have to completely disregard the file in Ms2 because it shows up corrupted. So, I have the ending results:
E:\PSP\GAME\PSPersonalize\Eboot.pbp\
Now that I have the files in the right places with the bitmap files in my root directory. (01, not 01.bmp) I figure I can open it now. I’ll go to the ‘Game’ section and try to open PSPersonalize, looks same as the screenshot the guy posted in the steps. While it is loading, it will show the PSP opening, then it will go black for a moment, then, I hit a brick wall, it stops the loading progress and shows a purple error screen with the message “The game could not be started. (80020001)” only option is to press ‘O’ to go back.
Please tell me how I can get this to work, I have been patient enough to go through and read over everything anybody has wrote on this page. If you don’t want to talk to me through this comment page you can reach me at my e-mail address: HeatBlink@gmail.com
I’ll even send you an invite to gmail is you want one.
i dont get wat the code (80020001) means can som 1 help me out
does anybody know if this works on a 1.52???
if i need to do something different…somebody tell me
To everyone having problems with PSPersonalize…DO NOT ADD THE .BMP EXTENSION TO THE FILE NAME!!! JUST USE THE NUMBER OF THE MONTH (01, 02, 03,etc.) I was going crazy trying to figure this out because the directions tell you to add it. Oh ya, much props to all homebrew developers!!!!
J-rokka is right! dont add .bmp it worked for me (1.50)
DOES THIS PROGRAM BURN PICTURES INTO THE LCD.. FOR REALS??
Every time I try to open the program it ways The game could not be started.(80020001) I have 1.50 firmware.
am confused by all this you can set background images without hacking a psp at all or am i missing something??
this is awsome collection of wallpaper, you guys should give it a try
