Stream FM Radio with your PSP

greg | June 17, 2005

source: psphacks.net

Here’s a cool hack which will allow you to stream FM radio using your PSP with the iPod iTrip (FM transmitter for the iPod).

Check out the original story here.

This is what happens when an iTrip (fm transmitter for iPod) and a PSP get together.

I got this idea when I was driving around with my wife. She owns an iPod mini with an iTrip.

I was jealous that she could listen to her music via the car stereo and change frequencies on the fly.

She also had the entire FM band at her disposal. That’s 87.9Mhz to 107.9Mhz – over 100 frequencies to choose from.

Now, sure, I could go and get an FM transmitter to jack-in to my headphone jack, but then I’ve got this cumbersome thing hanging from my sexy PSP.

One idea was to gut a generic FM transmitter.

Most of those have switches to change the freqs, and I’d have to make a place for those switches on the exterior of the PSP.

That would take away from the clean look of the PSP

The plan is to marry the two so that the PSP still looks like a PSP, plus maintain the ability to change freqs on-the-go.

First thing: pre-planning

Take the time to plot it all out.

Next I opened her up. I won’t bore you with the details on how to disassemble a PSP. You can find a tutorial about that elsewhere.

Then I played around with placement until resting on this spot under the WiFi/audio/memory stick daughterboard.

Next the pinout.

For those of you that can’t read my chicken scratch…

1 audio Left
2 audio Right
3 audio GND
4 NC
5 +3.2VDC
6 GND
7 +3.0VDC
8 +2.8VDC

It wasn’t a match made in heaven so…

I made room.

When it all fit, I reassembled and ran my wires.

During reassembly there were a few things that didn’t make it.

Now it’s all back together. It works great. To turn on the iTrip I use a dummy headphone plug. This way the transmitter isn’t on all the time.

To change freqs, toss in your iTrip CD. Go to “D:\Setup\US” and copy these files to a folder in your music directory on the PSP.

Now, just like the iPod I can change freqs any time I want.

All that’s left to do is to tell you that charging or using WiFi have no adverse effects.

Then rock out.

Oh it IS possible. Let me break this down for you since you obviously don’t understand. The iTrip, when coupled with an iPod, uses .aac files containing “beeps” and “dongs” just like the ones you hear when a modem dials out. These audio tones tell the iTrip to change to the desired frequency. I’m playing those same tones in the audio section of my PSP. (Note: This mod is for HACKERS, not gamers.)

NO, it’s for fuckheads that like turning thier PSP’s into crap. We’ll see how long your PSP holds up with you leaving the internal support out.

I bet your PSP becomes a creeking and cracking nightmare.

You have fun with that. This is what’s called a “dirty hack”.

OMG, this guy is an idiot.

Seems he scoured the web and found some OLD TRICKS then posted them as his own work.

What a POSER:

Yo guys, chill and lay off of the guy. Seriously, it’s not like he’s forcing you to do this.

It’s a pretty cool hack, and it’s not like any of the haters here came up with something innovative. If you deem it too risky or too complex, then simply don’t fucking do it. I know I won’t because I know I don’t have an extra $300 lying around just in case I screw this up.

But that doesn’t make it any less cool. Why can’t you just appreciate an interesting hack when you see one. If you don’t want to do it, fine. But don’t diss a person cause you couldn’t come up with anything…

I give this guy credit, he obviously did something that I wouldnt attempt and it worked.

As for all the fuckhead shit, what do you expect from ignorant morons? These are the same people that couldnt get the fucking swap trick down on the second try! Fuck, my 7 yr old cousin got that shit quicker than you…

STFU Joe. I can’t believe you just called that dirty hack “innovative”. So I guess the next thing you’ll be giving two thumbs up to is taking apart your PSP, soldering anything you want to it then never putting it back together?

A dirty hack is a dirty hack and it’s well worth mentioning as such. The flaming part of #17 came from this guy (if that was him) acting as a friggen poser with his hacker/gamer comment.

There is nothing COOL about that hack. It would have been a “cool” hack had he found a way to do it without sacrificing parts.

“But don’t diss a person cause you couldn’t come up with anything…”
This is why Joe is a friggen idiot. Apperantly he can’t read or comprehend the comments made about this hack. If you can’t come up with anything REAL to say then why bother???

Yeah, fuckhead wasn’t fair. More like just a dumbass for leaving the parts out. We’ve all been a dumbass some time or another.

Not sure what the hell #20 is talking about. I never had a second mem card so I bought a 1.0 instead. He’s just jealous because his poor ass couldn’t afford a 1.0.

I like how he calls people ignorant then he gives a comment of which he has no information on….CLASSIC!!!

YoU dont need two memory cards you can do it with one card only in about 5 sec. Thats how iam doing my swap trick.

Yeah, that’s a good quarter step forward but how are you doing that while waiting in line at McDonalds?

So yeah, you do need two memory cards to use this away from your machine. Since that wasn’t good enough for me I bought a 1.0. Still waiting for it to arrive.

Now the one memory card trick with the bat file…that WAS “innovative”. Pretty clever. But I’m sure many people still didn’t like that either.

yo man relax haven…I never said you specifically. I meant about all the people that bitched about not getting it to work. When the directions were there in front of them. I never saw you post ten times asking the same damn question!

As for not being able to afford another PSP, I can but way when I got one that works with homebrew and it is fairly simple to get it playing homebrew via the swap trick. I would rather by a motorcycle with the money I am saving then buying a second PSP…If anybody still has problems with the swap trick, read the news item about it with the 120 something comments it is in there and plain simple english.

switch off lights
