PSP Swaploit (PSP Launcher) Homebrew on 1.50!

greg | June 15, 2005

Update: Many people seem disappointed that it’s a swap hack. Personally I don’t have any problem with it as it works great. We at PSP Hacks give our thanks to the PSP-Dev team for discovering and providing this exploit. For those who are having difficulty getting it to work, follow these simple steps:

  1. Download any homebrew app/game
  2. Load up the MSwap Tool
  3. Select the EBOOT.PBP you wish to use
  4. Select an Output directory
  5. Click “Generate files”
  6. You’re now left with two directories – MS1 and MS2
  7. Copy the EBOOT.PBP from the MS1 directory to your first memory stick (MS) – X:PSPGAME<SOME DIR>
  8. Remove the first MS and insert the second
  9. Copy the EBOOT.PBP from the MS2 directory into X:PSPGAME<SAME DIR AS SPECIFIED ABOVE>”
  10. Remove MS2 and insert MS1
  11. Go to the Game menu on your PSP and select Memory Stick
  12. Select the PSP-Dev Launcher
  13. The moment PSP logo screen comes on, swap memory sticks
  14. Vola! You’re playing homebrew on your 1.50 PSP!

Well folks, as promised, get it here.

Its been confirmed working. It involves a swapping technique, so you require two memory sticks to utilize this exploit. Please read the included tutorial on how to use the exploit properly.

Download PSP 1.50 Exploit.

To get this working, you gotta generate the pbp file first, then get 2 memory sticks, put ms1 in the first memory stick and ms2 in the second memory stick, and make a folder for PSP-DEV in I:/PSP/Game on both sticks, then you take the first memory stick, and select the psp launcher on the first stick, and quickly swap to memory stick 2, it should work

Let me rephrase my above statment. Following their instructions, you get corrupt data error. Following Kamishiro’s instructions, the screen freezes at the white PSP loading screen and powers off in 10-15 seconds.

You should not get any error at all, this is a swap trick and the way they make you do it it freezes your psp. Unstable, inconvinent and unsafe.

It works fine for me. You will not damage your PSP. And, it was confirmed a few days ago this was to only work on 1.50 – not 1.51+.

Comment by Emil
2005-06-15 08:03:31

Do with 1.50 it freezes your psp. With 1.52 you get an error message then Sony relly did patch the psp. Also people with routers. Go to network update and you’ll see the 1.52 has ben released in the US but on the offical psp website it’s still 1.51. i know it was a good thing a bought that 1.00 psp on monday.

nah I dont like this. this is not what I was expecting. Ill go buy a 1.0 on ebay. I mean, thanks for the effort guys, but this is not what I was waiting for. I dont want to be a memory stick swap artist every time i need to play a game. Ill spend some extra bucks on ebay for the 1.0 before they disappear

Works fine for me. I got version 1.5. Ok the swapping aint the handiest thing on earth but they managed to proof that 1.5 is crackable. For now I enjoy homebrew by swapping.

Plus if you have 2 psp you can use one for new games with the firmware update feture and the other one for homebrews. Also if this is the best exploit for 1.50 how are we ever going to crack 1.52

Yah, same thoughts here. even if i do get it to work i would have to be EXTREMELY fast to swap them. i really doubt people are going to go for this, converting the .pbp files every time is a hassle, most people only have 1 memory card, for the price of a new memory card you could trade in your old psp and use that money to get a 1.0, and finally as stated above i really dont want to be a “memory stick sawp artist”

There isn’t an actual loader yet, so you can’t play .iso files or disc images. If you had a blank umd you could write the file onto it. Also i would imagin since sony said they weren’t going to make umd, it wouldn’t have any protection on it.

Worked fine the first time with the Genesis emu, but got the white screen lock-up with SNES…. And even if it did work, what a pain in the ass…. I’m hardly going to fiddle around swapping memory cards around on the bus, am I… Not to mention that it well could be hazardous to either your PSP’s health, or your expensive card.. I’d congratulate the team for their efforts anyway, except that if they’d TOLD us this was some kind of pain in the ass swap trick, we wouldn’t have all been as excited as most of us were. Major let down.. Major.

What part of this is “BS”? I’m sooo sorry but it was your choice to stay up that long. The Dev-Team said they have hacked 1.50 so it plays homebrews. More than half of you guys cry about it and yell BS. If I were them I would have said fuck you all and kept it to myself. Well it’s out. And IT DOES WORK. Just because it doesn’t work how you wanted it to doesn’t mean you have to wine about it. You treat the dev-team like there some type of Sony support. Please stop your bitching, if you don’t appreciate what they have done. You may never see anything improved. If you don’t like how it’s currently setup then just wait. Please do not bash people because they are talented in a level which you are obviously not.

For those who say the videos were fake. THINK about how the sequence in the 2nd video went. You see the emu running FIRST then they go and show you the firmware version. They never showed the swap because it was already running.

As to those who think this is inconvenient, I mean people swap on the PS2 all the time and they hardly moan about it.

The scoop on 1.0 systems:

Japanese PSPs only had 1.0 from December through March. Any systems that have been new since then have had 1.5 or later. The only way to get 1.0 systems now is to get them used. I suspect a lot of the “new” PSPs on Ebay are anything but new.

Ok let me explain it, I was among the confuced. Step 1: download the file fromg PSP-DEV :p Step2:Open the program MSwap Step 3: Put the EBOOT.PBP file from a homebrew in the ‘Fichero Pbp’ place. then the other blank is where u want the output folder to go. (u have to have 2 mem cards for this) Step4: make a folder that looks like “PSP\game\PSP-DEV” Step5: place the EBOOT file from the output folder MS1 into the folder PSP-DEV on ur 1st mem card. Then do the same to mem card 2 only placing the EBOOT file from MS2 into the PSP-dev folder. Step6: switch back to mem card 1 then go to game on ur psp then to mem card. It will say the program, click on it then quickly put the 2nd mem card in before its gives u an error. when thats in it should work (IMPORTANT: the Snes9x emu does NOT work at the moment but the Genisis/master does. PS:im still figuring out how to put games on it)
I hope that helps

Its really not that hard, choose an eboot homebrew file, say an emulator, run the program, it makes 2 files, but the 1st 1 on ur small mem stick the 2nd on ur large. But the 1st 1 in go to game go down to memory stick but dont run it, just leave it there, swap the memory sticks, then run it and it runs. Just like magic swap for ps2 but with mem sticks.

How would the first video be fake. You only see the screen on the 1st video, again because they probably didn’t want to show the swap trick. The only way you could claim it ot be fake is if they showed them not swapping out the memory card after they begin the launcher execution. Since the swap happens off camera you can’t really make that claim.

Also from what I hear in Japan most PSPs are now shipping with 1.5 now. I suppose maybe if you hit Akiha you might find a used one running 1.0. Good luck finding one!

PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE….. ive already put forward probably on eof teh best solutiosn to this problem but no coders have jumped up an aknowledged….. the swap trick would be ok to use as a one time solution to run some kind of program to flash the 1.5 with the 1.0 firmwware.

we have the 1.0 firmware
we know the bios is flashable
we knwo that flashing abios is not a complicated proceudre

so all we need is a program to flash the bios to 1.0 then we can use teh swap trick to run this and never ahve to swap again….

Myself, I couldn’t care less, this is just what I’ve noticed:

I think most people are pissed because their hopes where so high based on the first video which was a complete lie! The video showed us an effortless sequence that could have been used on the go. I think PSP-DEV is a bunch of pussy ass bitches for releasing such a BS video that was obviously faked and nothing but a lie to their actual product.

Had they simply not LIED with that video then about 90% of the bitching on this thread wouldn’t be happening.

If PSP-DEV has any hatred coming their way they then they deserve it and they have no one to blame but themselves for their outrageous lie.

Personaly I’m not going to buy another memory stick. I’ll just try to find a 1.0. That should save the average person some money. I’ll wait for an ISO loader to buy a new mem stick.

For those that got the swaploit to work, that’s great news!!! We are one step closer to a lot more homebrew!!!

and those capslock OCX guys! Im pretty certain those are runtime files, like visual basic probably. Just look up that filename on google, and you’ll find the runtimes.

I hope now that we can get a browser going, if not a loader that does not require swapping. there is no way we can program the loader to shell to another PBP file in the same directory? Is it a hardware exploit more than a software one, or what? seems like the code just needs to be perfected to me.

I’m not the bitching type. In fact I do thank the psp-dev team very much for this breakthrough. However, if nobody complains then how will those guys know to keep trying? If nobody complains they’ll think, mission accomplished. Well, its NOT mission accomplished. You can’t select what homebrew app you want run while standing in an elevator. You can’t select what game you want to play, then quickly change your mind and play another game on your homebrew. That is all we want. The ability to load emu’s with all the roms we want on our psp’s MS and play them on the go. I know it’ll take more time, but we are getting closer and closer guys.

Yeah i think many people have tried playing the games – just played some Chrono Trigger, Sonic and downloading other games now. It may not be the best way to load homebrew but it works and thats a big step forward. Im not gonna do this continously – getting Coded arms soon enuff so emulation not gonna see the light of day for a while. Still it DOES work and thats brill.

If you dont want to use it – thats up to you and if you are using it thats your decision as well – im gonna use it and carry on doing so till theres a better hack/eploit available.

(Only thing ow is to wait for the next snes update where the emu runs at full speed :).

Read the insturctions and it will work for you.
If u dont want to waste this extra 10 seconds when starting to play homebew then go try and find a 1.0 PSP.

The best thing we can do now, is create a psp app that we can navigate our games directory ourselves, executing the games from within our own app. This would minimize the amount of times we would need to swap our 2 cards. I’m sure this is possible, perhaps that is why the spanish psp-dev team first released a shot of a “launcher”. I assume they have already begun attempting this.

I no the hack isnt all that practical but hey its a step in the right direction. Maybe someone will find out a way to do it with out thes need to switch the cars but for now its the only way.

On another note – the two folders can be named anything you like aslong as they match in each memory stick — MS1 (On memory stick one) — MS1 (On memory stick two) and the swap trick will work. The folders can have any identical name.

For people asking for the source – there won’t be any. Use method B and think/understand what is happening.

Obviously the signed code check is done on execution *only* for 1.50. Thats why you need to swap.

Snes is working fine with method B. Emulator is not perfect however.

And, for you moaning fucks : would you like some cheese with your whine?

#253 : Do I like it?

We all wanted homebrew on 1.50. We have it, whatever the method. It’s not perfect, agreed. But it works.

I think the cunts that are moaning should buy a 1.0 or just fuck off and die in a corner somewhere. Preferrably both.

Just because it’s not some “press X for your homebrew, ISO’s and a blowjob” answer to their vastly over-expecting dreams doesn’t make their inane hogwash any more worthwhile reading.

That being said, I think you are all f&$%ing retards. These guys spend days and weeks coming up with a hack for something people didn’t even think was possible, and all you bitches do is complain about not getting it to work because you didn’t FOLLOW THE F#$^ING DIRECTIONS.

These dudes know the hack isn’t perfect. But it’s a start. It’s like an RPG: in the beginning, all you can really do is run around, but at level 60, you can do all sorts of crazy shit.

Thanks to the hackers for taking time out of their busy lives to develop a working hack.

First, I don’t own a PSP, I just saw this on Slashdot.

It’s an interesting hack. It’s a bit clumsy, but a clever way of going about things. It was a bit evil to show misleading videos that didn’t show the swapping.

What is absurd is the number of idiots replying and asking “what does ‘renaming a file’ mean?” or “where do i find the mSWAMPtool?”. If you can’t even spell “swap” or rename a file, you have bigger problems. Use Google, read other comments, use common sense, just don’t ask dumb questions. And if you’re insulting others’ questions, as I am, try not to fling racial or religious insults; it just makes your argument look worse.

Come on guys… you’ve gotten this free hack that is sorta dangerous but it’s proof of concept. You then try and do it – it doesn’t work out sometimes or costs you a stick – then you whine on the forum.

Uh, hello?

You’re just blindly doing something someone told you on the Internet – are you a retard?

If you want to play around with it, throw it in and try it out – if you are:

* Scared of loss.
* Unable to afford another PSP.
* Unable to follow directions.
* Worried about your sticks.

Don’t do the hack then. Go ahead, you can do it – press Alt-F4 or Command-Q. Honestly, you probably couldn’t even do a mod chip hack, so FO.

And come on guys, the “scene”? I’m betting most of you gusy can’t even program, let alone develop the electronics required in some cases. You’re just a bunch of guys looking for the easy way to do something. If you’re not smart enough to figure out a way to hack the PSP youself, shut the hell up and go home.

the thing is, if you know how to do a PSX swap trick (and understand how it works); if you know what ROM hacking/translating is; if you can build a computer and fix any hardware/software issues due to mediocre drivers or hardware, you should find this “hack” to work.

it’s not for stupid noobs who want to simply hit a button and expect it to work. if that’s you, you should take up something easier, like knitting.

I see a lot of comments where people think the swaploit is hated because it doesn’t work. I didn’t read any posts like that at all. What I do read is where PSP-DEV has failed to supply the product they promised. This swaploit doesn’t work as promised by thier video. That’s what people hate!

I think there is a way to make this expliot to use only one memory stick. It only needs time to see whats going on when the psp executes the code. For example, if we could make another directory on the same MS and call it X:psp\games\MS2. Iam not a programmer but I belive there is a way to make this to work. Or no.

Ok i read up a bit and #75 you are a f***ing moron. They called this a loader, not a swaploit and they tricked us with fake vids. They flat out lied to us about the videos and the “loader”. As for me staying up i was WORKING you dumb 13 year old. I decided to stay up an extra few hours to see what this was. Swap exploits are annoying, the psone crap sucked. Think if everytime you wanted to use your xbox for homebrew you had to pull off the case, open the dvd drive and put a cd in at the exact same time. I dont think people would go for that. As for me not being able to do “what they can do” swap exploit are no fucking big deal. Although you are probably right, i dont know anything thats why i have xbox apps up on xbins , added memory to my xbox to make it 128mb, and installed the modchip myself (not solderless you n00b). WTF my post got cut off… as i was going to say: the swap trick involves the psp reading the data from stick #1 and executing it then swapping in #2 to trick the psp. no possible way to do that with 1 memstick. what you are saying is to make 2 directories: PSP/GAMES/MEM1 and PSP/GAMES/MEM2. So you execute a program from the mem1 and the psp boots it, Then what? You would need to swap for another memory stick.

A) afraid of the psp malfunction while running the emu. there are cases of it shutting down and becoming a paperweight

I have just skipped through this post and am totally ashamed by the lack of suppeort for the people who gave us this trick and the trick itself. Everyone who has been bitchin are obviously to dumb to try and figure out a mod or hack for themselfs. You guys are DICKS. This is great news and the only people over hyping it were yourselfs expecting a full all singing all dancing program that any idiot can work, if it was that easy would we have had to wait this long for the hack ?

Shit you dumbass whining bitchs annoy me so if you dont like the trick dont slate it make a better one and show us !!

THANKS TO THE LADS WHO CAME UP WITH THIS.

#318 No what Iam saying is to make two make 2 directories: PSP/GAMES/Ms1 and PSP/GAMES/Ms2 on the same memory stick then you execute the Ms1. Then take out the memory stick and insert it again so it can read the Ms2.

daredevil,

Quit being suck a cock! The only people that hyped up the Loader was PSP-DEV with thier fake video. Then they released something completly different. Of course people are pissed. PSP-DEV got thier hopes up then never delivered. Instead they delivered some swaploit.

People are still waiting for what PSP-DEV showed in thier video.

Sure, for those that don’t like it they can either not use it or buy a 1.0. Like I said before I bought my 1.0 earlier today because I hated the released solution. That and I’m a spolied fuck!

I don’t support PSP-DEV at all. They are liars! Tricky bitches :)

All they had to do WAS NOT LIE!!!! That’s it!

Iam tired of hearing people saying that this is not a hack and that is sucks. So I will try to make something out of this exploit. Something that will let you run homebrew without the swap of the MS. And I bet the Killer- X and their team are also trying to make something else or they have something already like a bootloader.

How about you friggen read the previous posts before you post yourself. That question has already been answered at least TWICE!!!!

Al,
Why would the swaploit tut. give you instructions on other peoples software!?!?!? Your problem is with the makers of the emulator you are trying to use. Go ask them about the roms. Obvisouly no one here even knows what emulator you are using or they just DONT KNOW the answer to your question! If you want to remain here then you will just have to WAIT for an answer.

As for those who say they didn’t do what they said, how is that. I can run homebrew on my 1.5 which 24 hours ago I could not. It may not be the optimal way of getting it to run, but it works. Of all the people in the world working on it, they are the only ones to get it to work. Alot of you people are dont appreciate their work, maybe you should use your psp for what Sony wants you to. Maybe a modchip will come out, so then we can here a million complaints about that. Maybe some of you complainers can get an SDK and go to town. For those who are flaming the group, I hope every pixel goes bad, while your psp starts to smoke after you cat, dog, wife or mom pee’s on it.

Wowzers. Quite the # of comments. I’m floating in the same boat as “don’t worry” – 24 hrs ago I could not run homebrew, now I can. And really, to me, it’s not even that big of deal to swap memory sticks. Just think about all the cool homebrew that’ll be released now/soon! So they tricked us with the video, big deal – they got homebrew running on 1.50 before anyone else. And one more plus, I can play Punchout and Marble Madness now! On another note, please halt with the racial slurs – that’s ridiculous.

So you have no ill regard towards PSP-DEV for deceiving you with a lie of a video?

or are people just so happy that they can run homebrew that they don’t care about the deception?

I think it’s fun to see what people think, bad or good.

ISOHaven,

I’ll admit when I first read it used a swap technique, I was a bit peeved. However, after trying it and realizing it’s fairly straight forward and simple to use, I was quite content in the end. I feel PSP-Dev did a good job discovering this hole, regardless if I was mislead by their video.

Open the included tutorial in the rar archive – it’s in PDF form. Scroll down to Method B – you can get the SNES emulator working with this method. It’s rather time consuming though. Or you can wait a bit and I bet something will be released to simplify the process.

This works great, you have a pretty big window for loading stuff too. and to answer the emu questions, since most of these emu’s are still beta-ish, there are going to be some slow downs. The NGPC emu runs quite slow, like.. 20-30fps with backgrounds turned off, homebrews work great, as does the gameboy emu. Don’t expect to play Marvel vs. Capcom yet, but maybe someday.

Congratulations PSP-Dev, you guys are going down in history.

actually video 1 didn’t show any fingers at all. I am sure after all the complaints, they made video #2 which didn’t show loading, just exiting. Maybe some of you had to high of expectations. I figured, as long as I could figure it out, I am cool with it. If they come out with a mod chip, people will complain. Anything short of just loading and playing anything straight up, will not be good enough. Remember it is free, you get what you pay for.

SNES emulator works on the psp, without having to do method B. I can post the files and folders if you need them to copy to your psp.

To make run smoothly, push the analog stick up to make the framerate drop to like 4. and turn off the sound. Should run smoothly..

Once again, the best way to get SNES games to work is to get 0.02y11, not .02y10 or .03a. For some reason, y11 isn’t on this site, so get it from psphacker or something. You hit left on the analog nub, and set the PSP clock speed to 333mhz. No need to turn off the sound. If it’s still a little slow, bump up a frameskip a little.

Oh, and the games this fall are going to have mandatory firmware upgrades on them. So if you want to play Burnout, GTA, etc, you’re going to have to give up the homebrew. Between that fact and the possibility of a no-swap method before then, why would you want to waste money on some hardware that holds 2 sticks?

Why play those stupid games that we can play on the xbox or ps2. Also, for those fucking people that are bitching about the swap trick then fuck you. The truth is that this is the only way we were going to play homebrew on the psp v1.5. This is no other way of doing this. This expliot will help us make a better way of playing homebrew but if it wasnt for Killer-X and this team. We would still be crying about why cant we play homebrew games like the psp 1.0. Know if you dont like this expliot then wait until they make a modchip so you can fuck your psp. If you can even make this swap trick then you can install a modchip that might require you to solder something on to the psp.

happy swaping ppl

thax to psp-dev and Killer-X for this expliote
