Possible PSP Firmware Downgrade?

greg | May 19, 2005

loser over at ps2dev.org discovered a device called “lflash:” using a brute force style attack against all PSP I/O devices. This device allows block access to all 32MB of the PSP’s flash memory and it also opens up the device with read/write access!

This may possibly mean we’ll be capable of downgrading the PSP to firmware revision 1.0 - not entirely sure yet. Check back for future updates on this story!

Below is a list of PSP devices and their purpose: (from psphacker.com)

  • flash0: - fat access - system file volume
  • flash1: - fat access - configuration file volume
  • ms0: - fat access - memcard
  • fatms: fat access to memstick
  • isofs: fat access to umd
  • irda?: block access to irda port (doesnt support seeking), (? = any number - 0-9)
  • mscm0: block access to memstick (doesnt support seeking)
  • mscm?: error 0×80220081 (? = any number - 1-9)
  • umd00: block access to umd
  • umd01: block access to umd
  • umd0?: error 0×80010013 (? = any number 2-7)
  • umd??: error 0×8001B002 (?? = any number 08-99)

PSP US Firmware Update

greg | May 19, 2005

Firmware version 1.51 update is now available to us North Americans. This is the same as the JAP update a few days ago.

I’d suggest waiting to upgrade until further details are released. I’m under the impression Sony has discovered something in 1.50 that they wish to patch immediately.

If you wish to investigate further, you can download the firmware update from -

Firmware 1.51 Update

Place EBOOT.PBP into a sub-directory “UPDATE” on your memory stick in the “GAME” directory.

i.e.) X:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE\EBOOT.PBP

X: = the PSP drive letter.

Let us know what you find! :)

Wipeout Pure US Gamma Pack

greg | May 18, 2005

The time has finally come! Wipeout Pure Gamma Pack 1 for the US (and North American) PSPers!

If you’re having difficulties downloading the gamma pack via your PSP and Wipeout, you can browse over to www.wipeoutpure.com and download the US gamma pack directly onto your PSP’s memory stick!

Simply hook your PSP up via USB and put your PSP into USB mode. Browse to the site, and upon download - using a Java app - it will automatically detect your PSP (if it’s connected properly) and download the gamma pack directly to the memory stick. Very fancy stuff!

Or, as an alternative, you can just download the gamma pack from PSP Hacks below:

Download US Gamma Pack 1

Additions include:

  • Piranha skin
  • Staten Park track
  • Tigron ship

PSP Encryption Easter Egg

greg | May 18, 2005

Team Xecuter has discovered an easter egg in the Sony’s PSP encryption. It’s nothing spectacular but it’s interesting:

.adata:0043DD96 loc_43DD96: ; CODE XREF:
.adata:0043DD8Aj
.adata:0043DD96 ; .adata:0043DD90j
adata:0043DD96 mov dword ptr [ebp+848Ch], 6675636Bh

6675636Bh = “fuck” hahaha

Check out Team Xecuter’s article.

Thanks Luke for this find.

Game Sharing on the PSP

greg | May 18, 2005

Sony announced today at E3, Wipeout Pure and Fired-up will have downloadable multiplayer and demos for the PSP. Basically this means you’ll be capable of playing multiplayer games with one UMD. A portion of the game will be uploaded to the player’s PSP via wireless. It’s alot like the UMD swap hack but without all the hassles.

This makes me think that Sony probably doesn’t care about the UMD swap trick and won’t do anything to patch it up in future firmware.

PSP Controller for the PS3

greg | May 17, 2005

According to this article at IGN - the PSP will communicate wirelessly with the PS3 allowing it to act as a controller.

Quote from IGN:

“PSP won’t just be used for wireless file transfers — according to the official specs for the system, the PSP can be used as a controller for the console. Whether PSP will be used as a PS3 controller much is up to developers — the GBA and GameCube got along great together, and the PSP obviously has a lot more capable hardware to do interesting things than that duo. Whether PS3 developers enjoy that gimmick of a system with a full-color screen or else decide to stick to the more complicated PS3 controller configuration is a matter we will find out in time.”
