THUG2 Exploit? Homebrew App?!

greg | April 26, 2005

Final Update: Fluff has taken the liberty in contacting the father of Mr. William Wharton and shortly after receiving a response, the dubayou.com domain no longer resolves. This concludes the THUG2 exploit/PSP Stumbler hoax. It is indeed fake; this kid has been defrauding people out of their cash, PSP’s and making a tonne of false claims. Sorry folks.

Update (1:50 AM EST): I have below an email directly from a licensed and very knowledgeable Sony PSP developer. Here are his thoughts:

“Greg,
An exploit like this would be a wonderful thing for the PSP. I want
to believe in this THUG2 exploit.

Here’s why I can’t…

1. According to Sony developer relations, the consumer version of the
PSP physically can’t process unencrypted code due to mandatory
hardware AES decryption. It’s not just the boot process you have to
bypass as it was with the PS2. At this point I highly doubt this has
been circumvented. Down the road it may be possible with a mod-chip or
a reverse engineered flash of sorts.

2. Interact has a highly skilled team that has been working to exploit
the PSP since it launched in Japan. They have tried these things
before with no success.

3. If you cause a buffer overflow on the PSP, in most cases it will
simply shut off.

William Wharton is the self-proclaimed creator of PSP-Stumbler. He is
a 16 year-old with a fake ID. His “Dubbayou Network” of websites
detract from his credibility.

See William’s fake ID picture here: http://dubayou.com/images/id.jpg

While it’s possible that William has made some breakthrough out of
pure luck, I wouldn’t count on it.

Thanks,
xxxxxxx

Update: I received an interesting phone call this evening from a licensed Sony developer - who will remain anonymous. They’re very interested in this possible exploit and experimenting themselves. However, by the looks of it and all the information I was given, chances are this is a hoax. Yet, the PSP Stumbler crew claim it still to be legit. Again, check back for updates and more information. I hope to be receiving an email from the developer with his insight on this story soon.

Update: The creator of PSP Stumbler left an interesting comment on our page here.

“We received a copy of a some what PSP SDK, the person wants to remain anonymous. We do plan on releasing proof in the next week or so.”

So apparently they have an SDK which in itself could be even bigger news than the THUG2 exploit. I’m sure everyone like me is anxiously awaiting their proof. Until then we can take this all with a grain of salt.

Update: After a little investigative work and all the feedback from our wonderful user base, we’re declaring this a complete fake, unless of course some evidence of the exploit is released.

Fluff’s Facts (taken from our forum):

  • Claiming big things : Yes
  • Show any proof : No
  • Explain anything technically : No
  • Post brief updates to questions : Yes
  • Screenshots? : No
  • Proof of concept release : No
  • Any release at all : No
  • Explanation of how they did it in detail : No
  • Throwing around technical terms with no backing : Yes
  • Asking for donations before they’ve shown us ANYTHING : Yes
  • Paypal donate button right in your face on the site : Yes

Also, how would they develop a homebrew application without having the PSP SDK? All signs pointing to a complete PSP hacks hoax.

We’re not entirely sure how true this is, but apparently the folks over here have discovered an exploit in Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 that’ll allow you to run some homebrew code. They’ve also developed the first PSP homebrew application called “PSP Stumbler” which will log interesting traffic about wireless access points that it discovers.

Nothing is open to the public yet as their first attempt managed to fry the PSP. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Again, this may be a complete hoax - we do not know. We will keep you updated as more information is released.

We don’t claim to have made PSP Stumbler yet. All we are saying is that we found a exploit in THUG2 that has let us run malicious code. We received a copy of a some what PSP SDK, the person wants to remain anonymous. We do plan on releasing proof in the next week or so.

We anxiously await! Why not share the PSP SDK with us? ;)

Your source can still remain anonymous. That’s fine.

Why not show us the exploit in THUG2 and legitimize that claim? Also is this SDK you have somehow tied to the anonymous source? Unless the SDK itself will reveal the source I dont understand why you haven’t released this? Call it wishful thinking but I really hope that this is true. If you need any help getting this out shoot us an e-mail. We dont want any of the credit but would love to have homebrew apps for the PSP. If this isn’t a hoax we will always have a perm link for the team that runs the first homebrew app.

As much as I would love to play NES on my PSP I have to be scepticle… no screenshots, no videos, no details, no files, no proof AT ALL of the SDK or that you have it…

you could at least “give us a sign” or something… that would get you guys some support. I know I would be interested in getting PSP homebrew apps… if it meant a donation…

Hey I am all for the PSP movement towards independance, but until I see a shread of proof, it will be a fake. None of the “glove doesn’t fit” mumbo-jumbo.

It seems to me the “hacker” should quit playing games and focus on his English homework.

We didnt trick any one into click it.. In fact no donated. We will continus to work wiith our PSPs. We will release how and what we did to selected like the group at psp linux. Those links at the bottom dont actually pay any money they are part of an ad exchange network. So our ads are shown on other sites no money involved. The banners do earn a little cash.

The difference is that what we offer is free information, and a meeting place for like minded people to exchange ideas. All you’ve offered is empty promises and big secrets. It’s your unwillingness to show proof that gives you the label of a scammer. Enough already with the issue of ruining other’s psp’s they know the risks involved, either release your proof or be labeled a scam.

You claimed someone sent you a PSP because you asked for one, if you are not for real then this person was scammed.

I fully agree, and I too believe you are a scammer. here, I’ll even look up the word in the dictionary and see if it contrasts to you.

scam

n : a fraudulent business scheme [syn: cozenage] v : deprive of by deceit; “He swindled me out of my inheritance”; “She defrauded the customers who trusted her”; “the cashier gypped me when he gave me too little change” [syn: victimize, swindle, rook, goldbrick, nobble, diddle, bunco, defraud, mulct, gyp, con]

deceit….yeah, sounds like you, if you r lying about finding an exploit to get psp’s from people, then you…are a scammer.

Behold the failure of our school systems. The mighty minds that have brought forth PSP Stumbler lack the ability to use words like “our” and “you”. It still holds true that you should abandon your futile hacking endeavors and seek out the elusive English teacher forthwith.

LMAO. Dubayou, you’re full of shit and as Reebdoog says, focus on school bro. Stop making false claims. Maybe if you released a shred of useful information people wouldn’t dub (no pun intended) as a fraud. This is rediculus and you need to know your role and shut your hole.

yo guys, i know this fag personally. i played CS with him at my friends internet center that i worked at and he is an annoying lil bitch that claims a bunch of bullshit. yes, he does hack and prob. knows a good bit. but his personality is mainly to showoff(everytime i see him). he would bring cd’s into the gamecenter and ask if he can use them on the cpus. cmon do u really think we would let a guy that talks about hacking ALL the time to put his own cd in our cpus? Comes down to it i never liked this guy and he is probably lying as always. Oh and if dubayou thinks i am bsing? u live in winston salem, nc. and u played at GAMELAN.

if that is true than “WOW The It is a small internet after all…” isn’t it

Exactly what Dubayou.com says on the top “newsline”

Does look like that type of person, I use to know people like that. Eventually some changed (thank god) and others I just stopped hanging around because it was so annoying.
